An FPS optimization guide would be awesome! I'm running a Ryzen 7 3700x that I'm fairly certain is causing a bottleneck, but Fallout 4 runs great. Fallout 76, on the other hand, is typically sub 70FPS unless I look at the ground.
Have the same CPU, i noticed the game runs terrible - sub 60fps despite all the settings and very choppy
Turned out the SteelSeries app was using 80% of my CPU while playing 76 (remaining 20% lol) - disabling moments fixed the issue
So the problem might be outside of 76 itself, check the task manager while playing to see if anythings off
set ipresentinterval to 0 and then right click ur desktop to bring up the amd program. go to fo76 and turn on radeon chill and set it at 120 fps for both
try setting FO76 to run only on physical cores on one CCD.
@@saunorine Yeah I've already update that in the Prefs.ini. A lot of my issues are constant screen tearing and really awful frame timing resulting in jittery gameplay. I'm assuming its just my CPU because I'm running a RX 7700XT and I only run into serious performance issues on F76.
I'll try Radeon Chill, though I've had some bad experiences enabling that in other games. It may be the trick with F76 though. I appreciate the help!
Gforce experience game optimization is goated for giving me more fps lol thank god I don’t have to do any of that
I was trying your settings and I noticed you're wielding a LMG; I told myself "Uh, I haven't used one in ages". I checked my stash and couldn't find any, I probably scrapped the single star Quad I had floating around, so I crafted one a rolled a Juggernaut. Rerolled it once and I got a Quad, 25% FFR, 15% Reload Speed. Lol, you brought me a ton of luck today!
Finally, I know how you make your photomode camera go way out. Thanks for that. I have a number of these fixes from your old video so only picking up few that are new.
I would say for those who are not sure, copy all montined ini files to desktop or into a zip file as a backup, then if you don't like changes or something goes wrong you can then copy and paste them from desktop or zip file overwriting changes with original ini files. I always make copies before i make any changes just to be safe even though I have been making changes for improvements for other game for ages but always make backup of originals.
This is amazing, I actually can't believe I haven't been playing like this before, Thanks !
Nice!! Very welcome will try them out for sure!
Fantastic video, turtle, thanks for sharing in such easy terms. I’m always looking to make these types of little improvements to my game now that my pc can handle it.
This is a really AWESOME video! Thank you Turtle, I'm no good at knowing what game settings to use and what they do, but this guide has completely fixed my game! Thank you 🤩
Glad I could help!
I just started mods last night a reshader is awesome too also added original fallout 1-2 environment music made it nostalgic
lol was worried i would have to type the general part myself but I reloaded. thx for fixing
Love the videos and always helpful bro appreciate the hard work and keep it up man 💯
I just switched to pc from xbox about a week ago. This is awesome thank you.
Someone correct me if I am wrong. Fade commands were used to beat others into PVP play, in past PVP world NW. Depends on the speed of your internet connection and the Fallout server. AFAIK 1.0000 is normal, faster as you go down to 0.1000. Most used the values below, but your mileage may vary 😉
fFadeToBlackFadeSeconds=0.2000 ;(fade time before you can interact with game, too small and can fall through terrain)
fMinSecondsForLoadFadeIn=0.3000 ;(screen view fade combines with above command, need to balance them to get fastest interact game time, without screwing up game)
Hey turtle fyi the description is missing the [General] category
Thanks for these though, super helpful!
Updated try to refresh
Yeah it's there now 👍
Nicely done. Many thanks.
Sometimes I use the small, fast camera setting to hunt event targets, like Cultists and Spooky Scorched, without having to move throughout a whole area
There is a tool that does some of this, it hasnt been updated in a while, but i found it recently and saw the pipboy resolution change and it makes the quickboy actually usable and in many cases for me preferable to the actual pipboy. The menu looks so nice when its that high resolution.
it appears like you get an infinite loading screen if the "survival tent cannot be placed" or same with camp message pops up when joining a world, you can exit it by pressing Esc twice, but it's there nontheless
oh my god i was looking soooooo endlessly much to change the depth of field shit off .... jesus... this game looks now soooooo much better.. i still dont know why they dont have a option to turn it off in the menu it self...the game could be so much better if they would listen to ppl like u Turtle. thank u for ur AWESOME WORK!!
This jumped my FPS like 20-30 average. V good stuff.
Thank you so much for the AllGore option! I hate so much that splattering npcs all around..
Playing 76, I often feel like I need to upgrade by RTX 3080. Then I play newer games maxed out that run flawlessly and am reminded, it's just FO76 not my PC.
turn your settings down below low's stupidly overkill 60k shadow render distance to something more sane like 8k. the only visual difference you'll notice is your 3080 feels like a 3080.
I get 90-165fps. It just doesn't look like it because up close the graphics are dog shit.
@@OhioCarl Wastelanders update scaled down every texture that was present in game, there's a mod which restores the original textures, though not using it myself I couldn't tell you how up to date it is, and I'd imagine a post-Skyline update would take a while if it happens in the first place.
The shadows look the best they have ever been with your settings, thanks. BTW is there a setting to keep framerates high in built up areas like the Settlers camp.
Thanks again, AngryTurtle. You resolved a long problem I had, the division of the render distance of the shadows. Now my game runs more smoothly than ever. And I love the camera settings. And since the windows/Xbox store are garbage, to play the game in other language, I have to buy it from Steam, even with all recommend changes, I cannot put the game in English... I hate the Bethesda and Microsoft. But I love you
Reshade and Nvidia overlay stuff can make it look even better if you don't mind trading 15 or so frames for it
I’d love to know more about NVIDIA overlay or reshader. I used reshader once before but I think that was an old version called sweetFX? I heard some crazy complicated stuff can be done with reshade like improving lighting? But I have no idea where to start other than using someone else’s reshader
If you really need to crank your FPS up, like if you have a low end PC like me, there is a way to totally disable shadows! Here's the settings you'll want to change:
(I'm not sure if all of these have an effect, but shadows remained even after changing bDrawShadows=0, so I nuked ALL the settings and it worked from there.)
bDrawShadows=0
fShadowDistance=1.0000
fDirShadowDistance=1.0000
iShadowMapResolution=1
uiShadowFilter=1
uiOrthoShadowFilter=1
fBlendSplitDirShadow=1.0000
iMaxFocusShadows=0
fShadowBiasScale=1.0000
iDirShadowSplits=1
I play with umpc. Optimization guide will be awesome
One to add to the Nvidia control panel is the Power Management mode to maximum performance.
Turtle, you should really try DLDSR 2.25x.
It's basically reverse DLSS. DLDSR will run your game at 4k and then downsample it to 1440p. (it doesn't seem to work in borderless window though, only in fullscreen)
I think this game was made for consoles, so it only looks OK at 1080p and 4k. It's so off at 1440p. DLDSR 2.25x fixes it completely, looks like an entirely different game. Plus it helps a lot with Bethesda's terrible TAA
Edit: Another thing I forgot. Bethesda set VRR to off in this game (for some insane reason, guess because consoles don't have it? So, we, on PC don't get it too?).
VRR is variable refresh rate. Basically, whenever your fps drops, your monitor's refresh rate also drops so that they are in sync. Your game fps and your montor's hz are always the same. It makes fps drops look a lot better on your end.
You can force VRR on from NVidia inspector ( a separate NVidia app you need to download)
Thanks Mr. Turtle
Edit - doesn’t seem to matter. I pasted it after my archive lines and it worked fine.
If you have mods installed and listed in the [Archive] section of your custom ini file, does it matter where you paste this stuff? Before or after the archive section?
There is more to aiming in this game, vertical and horizontal sensitivities aren't matched (in-game settings don't help).
Also your sensitivity when scoped in is completely different.

SFE (base, needed by some mods)
Improved Health Bars (every 20% of HP bars is marked, great for bloodied builds to control your HP)
Lockpicking bar (shows you where to put the lockpick)
Fast Terminals (no letter-by-letter animation in ANY terminals, including Ammo Converter)
Quizzless Appalachia (marks correct answers in Possum terminals)
Better Inventory (abandoned, must be used with Better Auto Patch for Better Inventory)
Text chat (great for quick trading and other stuff like tracking events you want on other servers, so you can send a friend requst and join)
Tagged Rare Plans and Apparel (tags rare plans/clothes with stars and other icons to show you how rare it is)
Perk Loadout Manager (change perk loadout anytime, can have 10 loadouts)
Power Armor Fast Exit and Enter
Also, recommend Fallout 76 Quick Config for mod deployment, very easy to use.
The camera unlocking settings didnt work for me but someone helped me with it, i might as well share:

fSelfieModeRange=5000000
fPitchZoomOutMaxDist=110
fVanityModeMaxDist=400
fAdvancedFreeCameraSphereSize=0.001000
You can tweak the values to ur own liking
Does this include turning off the God -Rays and Bloom?
thanks for the video
I have been playing the game for a while and I have never seen blood splatter on the camera lens. I’d actually like to see that. Is it a setting in game or something?
I'm confused by the iPresentInterval setting, I definitely noticed it smoothing my mouse movement in the map menu and in overall gameplay, however even with FPS locked at 120 it seems to be breaking my game, my character gets frozen/stuck in place whenever I get close to a wall and I have to aim down sight with my weapon out to wiggle my way out of the frozen state, so I guess I'll have to live with the input lag for the time being, until I figure out a combination of settings that won't break my stuff
if you set the fps at 60 is it still happening?
@@AngryTurtle I just tried that and it seems to have corrected the issue, however I am now running the game at 60fps on a 120hz refresh display so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet on this one and keep the setting activated 😅
@@barosia8330 iPresentInterval removes V-Sync which capped the game at 60 fps. Without it the game can have game breaking issues because the engine can't handle too high fps. You need to cap it with Nvidia/AMD software or other like RivaTuner. Below 200 should be okay but you can cap it to your refresh rate.
@@theXVersu I guess the issue came from the Nvidia control panel not applying the "override application settings" in the first place because trying to change it back up to 120 seems to have worked this time around, I don't get stuck near walls anymore, at least not for now. Fingers crossed!
I had to set a frame limit cap in my AMD graphics software for the game. 144. Anything above that it spikes to 600 FPS inside and basically bugs the engine out.
Hey angry turtle!! I get stuttering sometimes, like occasionally my game just stops for like 5 seconds, but runs great all the rest of the time. any thoughts?
in both modes full screen and window?
@@AngryTurtle yeah, and i know it isnt my pc, its just this game.
@@DBZBardock00 what's your pc?
isn't there a way to get rid of the explosion flashes as a setting? like from grenade launchers and mini nukes? like explosiveflash=0 or some crap like that?
no
No, but you can download mods from Nexusmods.com for that. For example Explosions Lite.
Is there a way to help stabilize fps? I’m running at 165fps but I’ll drop down to 60 In westtek and other areas
Very helpful for returning players. Looking for a Best PC Mods of 2024 :)
I’m happy to press a button nd play with in seconds ✅ console😅
Does this still work if your game is installed on a separate drive? I did all my ini file settings, but none of them seem to work in game.

Wish this could help with me still running GTX 750 Ti and DDR3 RAM
Great video..FPS optimization guide would be nice to see, I'm still running an old i7 4770k with a gtx1080.. 😔
idc what anyone says, those 1080s still hold up REALLY well, i gave mine to someone & they're still using it to this day, vr & all. I was playing fallout 4vr on that card, while streaming, when people with 2060 supers were telling me they were having trouble running it, by itself. Just make sure your drivers are all current. Sorry lol, i just have a weird soft spot for that card lol
@@Dropla funny you say that cuz im running this game on an i5 1070ti. This card claps back with the up most efficiency
@@VerifyisMLG i don't doubt that at all! ♥
@@Dropla nvidia fucked up with 1080s lol, they revealed too much, didn't cripple it like other cards (it's a flagman so they went all out). People still get full vsync framerates on 1080Ti in 2024 games LOOOOOL.
now nvidia limits their cards so hard to sell you more expensive versions.
It's laughable that a card 2 generations up, like 3060, barely keeps up with a 1080, right?
@@timurdosabsolutely!
I have mods installed so I have a Custom.ini already with an {Archive} section. Can I just copy your settings above the archive section?
yes
Does anyone using amd graphics card and sometime not using 100% gpu usage?
if any of the settings removes the delay before you can move when you spawn after loading it's not worth it i have been using it for a while now and it's not good as you do move much quicker after it loads but it ends up teleporting you back after things have finished loading so your not really saving time
it's not happening to me
I made the game run in a laptop with lower config than the requisite. I5 10ª, 8 GB RAM and a MX130 2gb. And is running smoothly. My only problem is I can't chance the language. I did everything I knew and more I discovered doing some research. Nothing changed. I changed my entire windows. My system now runs like be in US and the game still doesn't be in English. Even the support couldn't help. Even them don't know how to change the language in the Windows Store version
how do you enable monitor technology on nividia it shows that it does not support it for me
there's a tool for nvidia that allows to force any setting you want (how well it will work it's a different topic) I think I showed it in my old fps fix video 🤔
@@AngryTurtle ok tysm
Another FPS video would be nice, I'm running a 2nd gen RTX card, with a pretty good CPU, the 2nd best for the AM4 socket
other, more demanding games run smoothly
however my 76 is prone to big big drops down from 60-20 especially in boss fights, foundation, or events in general.
borderless window = game runs high fps BUT jitters all the time unplayable skipping, but FPS stays high? unknown issue
fullscreen = game runs well, however the above mentioned drops happen.
tried the ipresentinterval which actually made the game run worse, both full and borderless, even after a FPS limit was applied, the entire game felt really horrible until it was reverted (which is odd since fallout 4 doesn't do this for me)
it just feels like for my mid range system I'm getting more drops than I should
so a video on lowering or disabling stuff that would cause these drops would be nice! thanks!
F76 is just a game that barely uses high-end PC components, regardless of the graphic settings and we can do nothing about it. In some areas you can have more than 100 fps but others can drop to even 50. That's just something you have to get used to. And just like any Bethesda title - this game too just hates borderless, fullscreen is always the way to go.
@@theXVersu yeah, the funny thing was not long ago I had a really crappy laptop, it ran almost the same on low, as this PC does on medium lmao
@@Zurblemance turn your shadows down below low's 60k overkill in your INI. 4k-8k. See no difference in the image, but get actual framerates. Same with object/NPC render distance.
kill the shadow render distance. that alone makes like 50% of any Fallout 76 fps guide.
this has just reset all my settings ? can you help
Why dont i have any " ini " files do you know ? I play through the xbox app on pc
Did you manage to find anything as I'm using the Xbox app version aswell
@@reapercraz2571 no the files weren't there for me for some reason
Any advice for shadows and rendering? I hate the shadow transitions where I can see the visible line of when the shadows change from high to low quality. I also have some issues where building details and some structures also pop in as I get closer. The pop in is not that close, but it is noticeable.
my shadow settings didn't work for you?
@@AngryTurtle Oh shoot I missed a few of the settings. I will try again and update!
@@AngryTurtle I also wanted to say you had perfect timing, I have recently been researching this (again) to try to find a solution :)
@@AngryTurtle I went and fixed what I had missed, which was the fblendsplitdirshadow and that has definitely made a huge difference. I do still have rendering issues, like you showed when you go a far distance in photomode, and I see the objects pop in. Do you know if that is just an engine limitation? I did leave the imaxfocus shadows alone though because I do like more detailed shadows over just soft
I have noticed a weird issue, when I am running near water, parts of the water texture will disappear so I only see the ground, and then reappear.
oooh i love modding game files
Funny how modding all these files make the game run better shows how unoptimised this game is
I would the lucky one if i got banned again. Happy modding everyone. I'm happy with my settings.
But then people are just gonna say your setup sucks and to stop being poor. It's so tiresome, there is no reason I should have to go into the files and alter values from a game by a AAA studio. @@PepeAgain1025
I need fps optimisation video please
i7-7800X, 32GB of RAM, and a launch 2060 need all the help they can get with this game. Don't know what the fuck Intel was thinking making the 7th gen HEDT CPUs have less cache than 5th gen but I swear my 5930K ran everything better.
I quit the game today. Too many screen freeze and infinite load screens having to do a mission all over again etc. Will be back if they fix things. Also bought Farmable dirt tiles plan, learned it and..dissapeared! Very strange things happening in this game.
I struggle with fps :'l third world country normal worker who lives alone can't afford an expensive pc. Specifically something to lower the amount of smoke particles
😘👍
too bad there is apparently none way to show durability of things as number and not stupid bar only
When I set my game to borderless fullscreen it drastically lowers my fps
use fullscreen with vsync forced on in nvidia control panel
This game runs not great even on very good PC's. Shame, i could do with some more FPS, it would make the game feel so much better.
Would have to disagree 4080 super and I’m running 140-220 constantly
whats worse is that having any monitor above 60hz makes optimizing the game terrible.
That’s an understatement, running borderless fullscreen with a 4090 and I average 70 fps in areas I’m fighting enemies, rarely gets over 100 in less populated areas
I mean, you could at least say to look for similar settings for AMD users. Not everyone uses Nvidia GPU.
I never had amd card so I don't know what settings they offer
Push FPS lol, yeah don't need that quite the opposite for me, 400+ FPS was crazy had to limit that as the game was being really weird and shots was not being registered as hitting targets so limited it to 100fps and also use 8x FSAA and the GPU and CPU is still snoozing.
My FPS is over 650 in Fallout76, 445 in Call of Duty and 323 in Apex legends, I NEVER change game configuration settings - All adjustments are done in AMD Adrenaline Software and the games Video settings. BTW FO76 has the least adjustable in-game
settings.
Informative Video Turtle, well done👍
Heh. It took me until today to figure out that the pip boy resolution settings weren't supposed to be in the custom.ini file, but in prefs.ini
