They jumped from 5 to 1. Which allowed them to draft career journeyman Joe Smith at 1 while high school phenom and future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett went 5. A case of good luck actually being bad luck lol.

Hakeem was the first pick, and that turned out ok. But you're right, the first pick over all isn't guranteed success. The jury is still out on Rose, but he looks good. The three before him have not panned out yet, but Oden may look promising. Howard, James and Yao are stars. Olawakandi, and Kwame Brown suck. Kenyon Martin isn't a "star" but is defintely not a bust. I guess you can say the same about Elton Brand. Duncan, and Iverson were pretty good.
That was also David Stern's very last year that he opened the envelopes for the NBA Draft Lottery.
Paul B. In 1996 until 2006 russ granik on the charge for draft lottery
@@zuni46 then 2006 until 2013 Adam Silver and now Mark Tatum
Dave Twardzik drafted Joe Smith, Todd fuller, and Adonal Foyle. This led to him being fired and set the Warriors back an entire decade.
This draft has some of my favorite players. Like Jerry Stackhouse, Bryant Reeves and K.G.
I love how Stern keeps turning the cards around to show the audience...but the same logo is printed on both sides.

Joe Smith had a decent career, but why couldn't they end up with Rasheed Wallace or Kevin Garnett. Typical warriors

Divine intervention? If God was on your side then he would have told you to draft Kevin Garnett.
What a waste…Warriors could’ve had Sheed, McDyess, or even KG! 😂
@ 3:13 pistons keep their pick
They traded it for Otis Thorpe
