We've come a long way. Falcons used to be thrown whilst on horseback. Horses helped close the distance and now it's nice to see cars being used in the modern era.
Awesome man. Take my falconry permit test next spring plan to start with a red tailed hawk for squirrels but cant wait to get an AK. Small bird with the heart of a lion!
Looks like a ton of fun! Also stressful, I have to imagine a starling could hurt the kestrel if you didn’t get to the kill quick. They have pretty sharp beaks. This to me would be a lot more fun than hunting rabbits and squirrels with a red tailed
You have to contact your state conservation department, and if and out what is required in your state. You Will need to take a state licensing exam, and find a sponsor/mentor who will work with you while you are an apprentice for 2 years. My daughter (who actuallly made that comment) was 12 years old when she passed her exam, so she has to be an apprentice for 4 years (bc you have to be 16 to become a general falconer).
Nice flying!👍 What is Arya's hunting weight and what is her initial response weight. Is she an imprint, eyass or a wild trapped bird. Also did you train her on a lure and baggies. Any good information for a fellow Falconer, I very much appreciate. Thanks for posting!👍🦅🦉
Awesome video and a really new inspiration for me about Kestrels. But I have to ask, isn't it illegal to hunt from a moving vehicle? At least that's what I was taught. Although I live in California, maybe the laws are different where you are. Please understand I am not trying to be negative here, just looking for clarification. Thanks for sharing this awe inspiring video of a Kestrel in action.. would have never expected!!!
It's a grey area here with my local fish and game. Hunting from a car is illegal, but hunting is defined as taking game. Starlings are listed as non-game pests. So as long as I'm safe I'm ok.
@@smithfalconry8050 I have a quail Farm in Minnesota and can do any size order that you need if you're interested in live quail for your falconry. Just let me know!
Was thinking about trading the RT in this fall for a kestrel as hunting for rabbits is so damn far. I noticed she gets some bigger birds, have you ever had a problem with her getting injured if you don't get on it fast enough? Also, how do you dispatch her catch, I keep looking to see lol. Just curious not being a "real" hunter myself.
Lol I assume the "real" hunter thing is from the Rated Red guy? And I just break the necks. And only injuries she has had are scratches on her cere. All them from starlings.
Great video !!! I just filled Application for TX falconry permit, n will mail to my sponsor :) I wish I could car hawking my America kestrel like what u did next year . I had a female Eurasian kestrel 6yrs ago in China. But she flies slow couldn’t reaching sparrows ( I trained her, she knows sparrow is yummy food)
I was wondering how you manage weight control, when you need to trade off, and reward her return to the fist?? Also, does she spot the prey, herself, or does she know to look for prey when you 'launch' her?
Have thought about a young kestrel for summer hawking. Seems nice being able to keep hunting but with taking a break from the big fields. Is she a passage?
No, she was taken as a brancher. I got her from a rehabber after a cat caught her. I trained her and flew her for a month before regular season, then put her up till spring.
@@smithfalconry8050 rescued a fledgling being attacked from a pair of grackles until he was plucked bald last spring. I work with a falconry ran rehab center. Allowed me to raise him until he was fully flighted and then I put him back with the family group. They raised him from there. Extremely tame and playful bird for being that age. Regret trying not to ask to keep him haha
I just cover up her kill and hold a starling leg where she can see it. She'll sit for a second and jump to the fist. Last clip in this post shows it. instagram.com/p/Bi2-dpTj0rc/?igshid=1lyhco02kmoy5
I'm curious: How badly can your kestrel hurt a non-target bird before you reach her? I see you don't need a glove with this tiny falcon, but its feet are still weapons. I'm curious how much pressure they can exert with their talons.
I started being sponsored in 2010, but my sponsor got deployed luckily I met another falconer over a craigslist ad selling a dji phantom. The weird part was I had no idea he was until I saw the mew and heard the screech of a peregrine, so my interest has been re-ignited and here we go! I didn't think Kestrel's were that small, whats he/she weigh in at?
If you want to know what you can hunt and what methods you can use legally you'll have to speak to the police about it in the UK or search it on Google.
That's a big risk you're doing right there. Did you get a good look at how sharp its talons are? Without a thick glove, they would've dug into the skin.
It fun, and my kestrel doesn't get eaten in 3 days. Also fed my 2 goshawks for several seasons. Also it plays to a kestrels strengths. They're ambush hunters, it's not a merlin.

This AK got 300 or 400 Starlings in one seasons (season being base on temperatures not hunting season)
Can't believe there are not many views .this is awesome .once utube decides to post it more I'm sure the views will soar to millions ...
That's a classy little Falcon,
I like the fact that you trade and release the non target birds.

She killed just over 1000 starlings, and was never injured by one. Squirrels with a red tail is definitely more risky, but still plenty safe.

Outstanding.
What do you do with all those starlings?

Smithfalconry Hello I live in Florida.Where can I buy an American Kestrel??
@@robertocastillo6350 you have to be a licensed falconer to possess a kestrel.

It's a surprising amount, but I've held onto a good number of live starlings she's cought for baiting traps. They've always been fine.
you don't need a glove for a bird this small, but it's still recommended as Bird's feet don't grip very well on human skin or normal clothing
@The Spectre it's different for every bird. This one hated gloves.
That looks so fun!
