Important to remember that the guy or gal at your local bike shop isn't your mate. They're an overworked, underpaid employee just like the rest of us. They're not giving you "mates rates" or a "special deal" they're making a sale so they can pay their bills. Don't be a time waster or a hassle, treat them with respect and they'll return the favour by not ripping you off or fobbing you off when your BB creaks. After many years and many $ of loyalty that might change... Maybe
Well said!
Uphill KOM a flex of physical ability, Downhill KOM a flex of bike handling ability 💪🤙
#6 "Some of the best rides i've had are the ones where I've decided that I didn't wanna go, I forced myself out there and I came home feeling like a champion."
I really didn't feel like riding today, but I took your word and went out there. Came home with a result that I'm really proud of, and I definitely feel like a champion now :) Thanks for the motivational, informative and good quality videos!
Isn't that the truth? It's surprising how well we ride sometimes when we're not feeling it.
Thanks man, so stoked to hear one of these points has already resonated!
#2 is so important and never mentioned in other videos similar to this one. Very good advice! I love my LBS. I know and talk with everyone from the owner to newest employee. These relationships allowed me to get a job there when in between jobs in my field. Even when I can get something easy online I’ll go to the shop to check if they can get it for me. They appreciate the business and I’m rewarded with excellent service and speedy turnaround.
I swear I thought you were in hospital when I saw you in that shirt :))
Lol - and there's me thinking Tristan had just escaped from one!
🤣🤣🤣
My fashion choices off the bike clearly need some work...🤣
clothing wise is super hard to get right even after 20 years! when you get it right its magic!
Clarence St Cyclery was my dream shop as a child in the 1970's I loved the Raleigh bikes they had in stock and lots of parts and accessories..so happy to hear they are still operating today.
You make great vids and don’t pretend. Love it. This vid was spot on. I am an Aussie living in Paris and hearing from other passionate Aussies in Europe makes me happy. Great stuff Tristan.
Vibe check: immaculate.
🤝🏼
Such a great video Tristan. Spot on, on all those topics.
This was awesome. Gonna send this to anyone interested in cycling. Definitely learned that I need to improve in my group riding skills this past week trying to sprint to a stop sign and wiping out. Total newbie vibes, and I’ve been riding for a few years now. Still learning. Keep up the great content. Good vibes from NY, USA!
A point you could add for people that don’t live near mountains: look at the wind direction when planning your ride and make sure to have it in the back on the 2nd part of the ride. It will be much more enjoyable!
Great point. Thanks Max!
"Rug up" on the downhills. 🤣🤣 That's going in my vocabulary. Love it!
I've been cycling for over 30 years and there's nothing here to argue with. 👍
Excellent advice. Love your content.
Great list, Tristan...especially knowing what to wear for any condition. And safety is HUGE, especially with so many angry drivers out there.
Good one! Thanks
All super points. Great to see your photo's in Sydney. Cheers
Love the video, fully agree with all of the points! Love the energy provided over the video! Great job!!
Thanks dude 🙌🏼
thanks Tristan
Keeping them coming mate! 🔥
these are perfect! I have a bunch of friends who recently got into/getting into cycling and i’m just going to send them this video instead of hurting my thumbs with a long text.
great video, lots of useful information, provided in a great way
thanks for this Tristan
Enjoyed the video!
Super video, great advice. Even after 35 years riding it was good to watch and be reminded of several things! All your points are spot on! Thanks mate! 👍
Cheers Robert!
Thanks for making this video, because all the points are spot on. When i started cycling three decades ago, i joined a group of experienced racers and they tought me everything there is to know. Theses humble mentors were just great and became close friends. So, be patient with newbies and try to be a mentor for them if you can.
🙏🏼
high quality and very informative videos, thx. subbed!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Good 2nd point. I'm currently in Vietnam. The mechanics charge way too low. So we always try to buy them coffee/bubble tea while they work on my bike.
Great tips, especially point number 2 about getting to know your local bike shop.
Great advice mate .... we have all been there 👍👌
i wish someone would told me…
buy nice or buy twice!
very true when it comes to cycling.
Very nice video🔥💪🏻
Love this (I cannot count, but make the best videos 😇😉)! Great video again.
Hey Tristan, I thought you said only on-bike clothing looked weird;)
Love the advice, especially about eating properly - still trying to get this right whilst attempting to loose some fat!!
Keep up the great work:)
Ur channel rocks!
Glad you said cycling clothes looks weird, i was scared too.
because of this video it made me subscribe to you. thanks for the last tip. =)
Thank you 🙏🏼 Glad you enjoyed it so much.
nice
What about training on fast carbon wheels?? Staggering how many ride train on the fast light wheels and tyres. Get a set of solid alloys
I have two different thoughts about this: on one hand, I agree. A solid set of alloy wheels is great to train on, they're bombproof and it feels great to get back onto the carbon wheels when it's time to race. Conversely I also believe that 300w is 300w whether you're on alloy wheels or carbon wheels...you'll just move faster on carbon wheels. Moving faster in training while doing the same power is actually closer to the sensation of racing, which means that as long as you're training to power and not just average speed, training on carbon has benefits over training on alloy wheels. Thanks for the comment :)
Great vlog. Tristan! - hadn't pegged you as the superstitious type 😄. It's more than a bit embarrassing to ask this, but is there any chance you could an instructional vid on riding no hands - how to progress from scratch. It's a skill I never learned and I can really see the benefits of it (plus, you're kind of a master at it)?
I really liked this video, some really good advice that’s better than the usual “don’t wear underwear under your bibs” type stuff.
I’d also add: you don’t always have to ride hard to get fitter and faster. Riding easy gets you fit too and helps be more consistent, which is the ultimate goal.
Know how to clean your bike. Take it to DD :D Love it
Knowing how to and knowing how to do it *well* are two different things...😅
haha despite the superb content, it's funny to see how you are becoming more professionally and - probably as a result of that - a bit more clickbaity. but fair game. good to see you are developing your channel with quality content!
Yeah, part of me hates it and part of me realises that - unfortunately - in order to succeed on this platform you’ve got to play the game. I’m hoping that the slight step up in quality will balance out the clickbait…🥲
Incredible video! Where is the location at 5:03 ?! So beautiful
Thank you. That's Andermatt in the Swiss Alps. A LOT more will be coming from Switzerland in a few episodes time...
for about a minute I thought you were wearing a base layer 🤣
What camera do you use for filming your a-roll? it looks great!
Thanks man. A-roll is Canon R5 and B-roll is all iPhone 👌🏼
@@tristantakevideo thank you for the reply!
@@OliverJanShD No worries mate 🤝🏼
Which latex tube brand was in ur saddle bag?
Usually Continental
hello Tristan,i'm due in Girona in October,is there any group rides that go our from Girona,day/time
Hey Paul, yep, there are shop rides from The Service Course on Sunday mornings and Eat Sleep Cycle on Monday mornings.
@@tristantakevideo thanks,,,,,9am start?
I’m not sure of the start times..best to head into both shops and ask, or keep an eye on their social media.
What’s a KOM?
Riding in a bunch Unless you're a actual pro like your friend Ben Their always someone stronger then you Cycling should be fun
I liked your video, I even subscribed but I have to say you cannot take KOM by letting off the brakes, I challenge you to try it, people holding downhill KOMs are crazy and do have mad skills and most of the time you need to not only let of the brakes but be in really hard sprint in most of the segment to take KOM on some well-known segments, you can do it in less popular segments but you will not hold it for long. But please do try and report back :)
I made that specific point to try and discourage beginner cyclists from going for downhill KOM’s before they have the skills. The downhill KOM’s I have are all a result of - as you’ve said - sprinting out of corners and being off the brakes for as long as possible. They are simply not something I recommend people go for.
@@tristantakevideo Yes we do agree, downhill is not for beginners. And that is the great idea for video to somehow show/explain to them what is needed for crazy downhill speeds. I do not encourage people to do it I just commented because often there are people saying oh you just let off the brakes, or potato can roll down the hill ... but it is not remotely close to it in reality :) I do love downhill and I can do it ok, and it is nice skill to have and it is probably best and easiest way of learning aerodynamics which is pretty important in cycling so in that sense it is for beginners if they pay close attention what and how they do it. It can be extremely dangerous but also extremely useful and fun.
Really irrelevant question. Are you going to review those hyper wheels some time in the near future?
For sure. I’ve been meaning to for a couple of months and just haven’t had the time to make a well thought out video yet. But yep, it will come at some point!
You get a like simply because the #13 is upside down 😆
6:17 I was on a group ride over the weekend and EVERYONE would sprint off at the lights for some reason, it was so annoying. Annoying for me because my wheels are slow at accelerating and I didn't want to waste energy. I'd always eventually catch up. Jerks.
I definitely made this mistake when I started riding, but quickly learned how frustrating it is when I started organising my own rides and was trying to keep the group together. Might be worth sending them this video... ;)
No undies under the bib !?!?! No one told me!!!
I prefer to learn how to fix my own bike and not waste stupid money at my local bike shop. Buy my own tools and learn.
Damn I suck
Not at all. I believe in you.
@@tristantakevideo hahaha, I literally made all of these mistakes. There should be a guide book that comes with Road cycling! Haha
Haha man it’s taken me so many years to wrap my head around it. I’m still making mistakes over here 😂
@@tristantakevideo I think that is the beauty of it, love your passion for the sport buddy. Subscribed!
Thanks man 🙏🏼 Hope you’re well!
