      Looks like the old east stand was already demolished, and the north stand would go by 1978
      But the east stand cost Chelsea dear, and a dip in their fortunes for about 20/25 years
      At the end of the 1972/3 season, chelsea would have slumped from a 7th place finish to 12th
      1973/4 saw a 17th place finish with just 1 point saving them from relegation
      1974/5 saw relegation

    What a classic 70's game this was, I don't watch the game today, because it sold its soul to the big TV company's, and the wages are now a disgrace to the normal working man or woman in the street. I often watch these games, because the game itself is far more exciting, apart from the odd plonkers who think its fun to run on to the pitch while the game is still in progress.

    Great result even with Lorimer in goal. Lovely goal by Charlie Cooke set up by a superb Alan Hudson pass. The rot had set in by then though - Charlie was sold a few weeks later to Crystal Palace. Dave Sexton was one the great British coaches but he made some strange decisions at times - selling Keith Weller and buying Steve Kember!

      I can remember being in the garden listening to this match on the radio as a 6 year old Chelsea fan, absolutely amazed at the scoreline. Looking back, it's a shame that Chelsea didn't retain all their young players from the mid 60s, you can see how Leeds did and how they developed as a great side over that decade or so. Chelsea were great on their day, but they could have been so much more.

    • @DMCpellegrino
      @DMCpellegrino 2 роки тому +1

      Of course, I should add that, whilst not without success, from the mid 1960s Chelsea were too often the 'nearly' men, though not to the extent that Leeds were (which shows how dominant Leeds were, they were the most consistent English team of that decade 1964/5 to 1974/5)

  • @kevinprior3549

    1:05 John Hollins gives Peter Osgood a clip round the ear for missing the shot.

      Debatable. But one wonders how much greater things might just have been at Chelsea (from 1965 onwards) if the likes of Terry Venables and George Graham, etc., hadn't fallen out with their manager Tommy Docherty towards the close of season 1964-65. If only....

    I love that video, but the goalie going off took the gloss off of it, if Only Revie had gone in goal, we would really have hammered them Osgood would have got at least a hat-trick with The Don between the posts and he would have put him through them too. Why did he not pick Oz for England? Because he scored that magnificent goal against him at Old Trafford, that's why. Alan Hudson 0-0

    Can I put some meat on the bone of Leeds should of won the double in 71-72. They won the FA cup on Saturday against Arsenal and had one game left , away to a very good Wolves. However, the Football League made them play it on the Monday night! They needed a draw but lost the game, and Derby won instead. Can you imagine anything like that happening today? And teams moan about what they have to do today with fixture congestion.

    • @davidradford7720
      @davidradford7720 5 років тому

      Yes, it was terrible that Leeds were made play that match on the monday, Wolves were hard to beat at the best of times, Leeds should have won more, but they were always going for two or three compitions every year, I think they ran out of steam a few times ( 1970, 73,) funny how they won the league in 74, after getting knocked out of the other cups quite early by Leeds standards

    • @chelseacharger
      @chelseacharger 5 років тому +4

      The FA and the FL have always been myopic amateurs. They blocked Chelsea becoming England's first European Cup entrants in 1955, even after the club had been drawn to play Djurgardens from Sweden in the 1st round. All because they saw no future in continental matches and it would disrupt their own competitions. In 1984-85, the club had to play a 3rd Rd FA Cup game on a Saturday, followed by a League Cup quarter-final on the Monday. That went to a replay up at Hillsborough only two days later. Then the same the following week. A League game on Sat, FA Cup 4th Rd on Mon and second replay in League Cup on Wed. 6 games in 12 days. They have a history of never helping out English clubs in Europe while overseas teams are allowed to shift their fixtures and have more rest before European competition matches. In 2012, before a CL semi final against Barcelona, Chelsea asked the FA to have a previous fixture brought forward. What did the FA do? Put it back as late as possible. Flippin' hopeless they are.

      @@davidradford7720 I agree about 1970, 73. I think the same thing happened to Chelsea in season 1964-65. Chelsea lost their commanding position but were still top of the table on 18th April 1965, but they played 10 games in various competitions in the last month (their last 6 league matches inside 13 days), and by the last day of the league season had played close to 60 matches whilst title winners ManUtd had only played 54 (Leeds 51). Chelsea had won the League Cup (then a 2 legged format throughout the competition), lost an FA Cup semi final to Liverpool (Leeds lost the final)... and, think how strange it was that over the space of 4 days (from16th to 19th April 1965) both Chelsea and fellow title challengers Leeds had to play 3 league games (yes, 3 leagues games in 4 days !). No wonder ManUtd sneaked through at the end to beat Leeds on goal difference ! (in the final week, Chelsea lost their last 3 games, all away in Lancashire/Cheshire, not helped by internal ructions at that stage). By contrast, ManUtd had already been given the luxury of playing their last league game a few days behind Leeds and Chelsea, and only then resuming European fixtures after the league campaign had ended. So, methinks possibly some Football League bias towards ManUtd even back then ?

      @@keyuantejohnson6266 Historically ? Well, when it comes to each of the 3 major domestic honours, on each occasion Chelsea won these before Leeds ever did, because Leeds didn't win anything until 1968. However, Leeds were the most consistent dominant club in the decade 1964/5 to 1974/5, thanks largely to Don Revie. Both sides won 2 major European titles in the 20th century, so we shouldn't denigrate either club's history. Howard Wilkinson made Leeds a force for a short while in the early 90s, but time has not been kind to them since, in the same way time wasn't kind to Chelsea from late 1972 onwards (financial mistakes put both clubs' futures in jeopardy). As for longstanding fanbase, Chelsea's old stadium always gave Chelsea the edge there (historically), eg postwar crowd attendance of over 80,000 (and over 60,000 in big games up until the time the stadium was semi-developed).
