  • On our last trip to the Big Island, we were on a mission to see all of the colored sand beaches. One of the most unique ones is the Green Sand Beach. There are only four natural green sand beaches in the world, and Papakolea Green Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of them. This very unique beach is hidden away along the coastline of South Point and is definitely worth the visit.

    How much is the truck ride down and what hours do they run?

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  3 роки тому +3

      Unfortunately I am not sure. From what I have heard, they are locals running the shuttle, not a company. Im not sure if the price fluxuates. I believe it was somewhere in the $20 range when we were there.

    Is the truck $20 per person one way or RT? Do we need to reserve there or prior?

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Leia. It was $20 when we were there a few years back, but that could have changed. It is just something that is run by the locals so the details can change pretty quickly. It is a pretty low key thing and no reservations are needed.

    Walking there is a significant part of the adventure! We three did it in 2020, just before the new 2021 year and it was a great experience. The colors were incredible: I was not sure how to color balance my video and stills!

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  2 роки тому

      We agree! You have to walk it to appreciate the experience. The coloring was definitely interesting. I would probably just use to white balance that is being created by the sky (sunny/cloudy/etc). Hopefully, if that is correct the sand will be too! :)

    Headed to that area this July. Just need some advice. Not sure if you've hiked Punalu'u to Kamehame Beach, but I'm torn to hike either Papakolea Beach or the hike to Kamehame Beach as I'm only going to be in that area for a day. Any opinions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @LiveThatAdventure
      @LiveThatAdventure  3 роки тому

      Hey Scott, I just did some research. I believe Kamehame Beach is a premier nesting area for the endangered turtles. Turtle nesting season is from June to November. Therefore, you might not guaranteed access to Kamehame Beach during this time. And according to the research, it's best to avoid all turtle nesting sites completely during this period and even avoid Kamehame beach in general.
      Hopes that help with your decision.

    FYI: I recently spoke to DHHL’s (Department of Hawaiian Homelands) who is responsible for this property. Spoke with them today (4/28/2022). They told me it's *ILLEGAL* to either DRIVE or WALK/HIKE out to this beach. Was advised people can be fined for trespassing. I had no idea myself because I saw no signs when I was recently out there. Just posting in case any else is thinking about hiking out there. Just posting for information. Not judging....but if anyone doesn't believe me just call DHHL and they'll confirm. Please don't shoot the messenger..... thanks for reading.

      @@LiveThatAdventure The most recent update is here: Another Iconic Beach Threatened | Will Hawaii Take Action?
      SEPTEMBER 12, 2022 by BEAT OF HAWAII. But my understanding is that it's about illegal off-road driving, and they cannot enforce it anyway. I do not mind banning vehicle rides there: The cars did damage the path to the Beach a lot.

      @@komandagleby_GB Yea it would be cool if it was reserved for hiking only. The thing that might be a problem with that is that some of the locals probably make a living driving the trucks out there so they would probably be pretty mad about it.
