  • Wanted to get a quick video up of my new personal best striped bass off the surf. The fish measured 40.25". Also in this video, I cover a tutorial on how to set up a fish finder rig for surf fishing. This rig is a go-to for bait fishing off the beach and can catch you lots of fish of all sizes. Hopefully this level of fishing continues through the next few weeks-get out there and get some lines in the water!

    make sure that drag set from the jump!! And then adjust accordingly. I’m surprised u didn’t lose that fish messing with the drag while he was running. Nice fish tho n ur right u gotta walk out a lil ways when releasing, that’s the best way I’ve found.

    Great video, Sam! What weight sinkers do you normally use for bait fishing with clams in the surf for stripers?

    • @SaltySamFishing
      @SaltySamFishing  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks! Usually it depends on how rough the surf is. In this video I was using a 4oz weight. 3oz is usually the lightest I’ll go and 8oz is the heaviest the rods I own can handle for when it’s really rough out there.

    Hello sir, I would like your opinion.
    I would take more fish with a high low rig or carolina according to you?
    I fish with my family.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @SaltySamFishing
      @SaltySamFishing  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey, great question! Either rig works depending on the application. High low rigs tend to keep bait off the bottom which prevents crabs from chewing at your bait. It also casts a bit better than a fish finder. I like to use high low rigs with blood worms and smaller hooks earlier in the season in back bays and also later in the spring with sand fleas or clam off the surf. Fish finder rig I generally use for larger baits like bunker chunks and clam as well like in this video. Always helps to have one of each on hand so you can decide based on conditions, baits and what you’re looking to catch. There’s no right answer exactly but more so learning what you prefer to use when!

      Not easy to make the right choice on montages.

    Hey man! Nice catch! I live in PA and was wanting to try out surf fishing soon. Where is this located at? Don’t wanna go to a bad spot and skunk on my first day lol

    • @SaltySamFishing
      @SaltySamFishing  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey Sean, so a lot can go into this answer so I’ll try and condense it to three main tips. Right now, really at every beach along New Jersey as well as the Raritan Bay, plenty of fish are being caught. Surf fishing has a lot of factors that could play into a successful day and sometimes those factors can all be present and still result in getting skunked unfortunately. The best advice I could give to get you on some fish are as follows:
      1. Pick the beach you’d like to go to and arrive either before sunset or 2 hours before sundown (I’ve been finding more success before sundown recently). Check the tides as well, 2 hours before the peak of the high tide has been really producing fish (sometimes regardless of time of day). Essentially give yourself plenty of time to plan to fish one of these times of day.
      2. Make sure you have the freshest bait you can get. Clam in the shell and fresh bunker are preferred and have been the bait of choice as of late. Depending on where you are planning to go, might be a good idea to call a local tackle shop in advance to see what they’ve got in store. Also, ask them any other questions you may have.
      3. Finding structure is probably one of the most important parts of surf fishing. There’s a lot of UA-cam tutorials that are worth a watch to help you learn to read the surf for good spots. Rich Troxler on UA-cam has a great series on this. Google maps is sometimes a good tool to use when planning a trip. It’s not always 100% up to date but may help you scout out some good structure before your trip. Pick a few spots to try and with the other two tips hopefully you can get a fish on.
      Hope this helps!

    I’m looking to start surf fishing for strippers and blues any recommendations on a rod and reel setup not looking to spend more then 300

    • @SaltySamFishing
      @SaltySamFishing  2 місяці тому

      For using lures to catch striper and blues I have a 9ft Medium Heavy Tsunami Trophy 2 that can handle 1-4oz of weight paired with a Penn Battle DX 5000 size reel. I find that this combo is just the right size for casting and also the weight rating can handle bait fishing on days when the surf isn't all too rough. That combo should come out to just under $300 leaving some room to use the extra money for tackle.
      For bait I mainly use a 10'6"ft Tsunami Trophy 2 Heavy Fast that can handle 3-8oz of weight paired with a Penn Pursuit 6000 size reel. This combo is definitely a bit cheaper, but because of its heavier rating, I don't really use it for lures.
      The best way to get set up is to head to a local tackle shop and let them know what you're looking to do (throw lures/throw bait/what species) and a price range and they'll get you set up with everything you need within that range. Best of luck out there, hope this helped!

      @@SaltySamFishingHey Sam, where did you get your 10ft Medium Heavy Tsunami Trophy II that’s rated 2-6oz? I’m looking online, and for some reason I can only find the 10ft Trophy rods rated up to 1-5oz. It’s shows only the 11ft Trophy rods rated 2-6oz. I’d definitely prefer to get the shorter 10ft rod rated 2-6 oz like you. Thanks in advance 🎣

      @@DDfishes17 Great catch on that, I totally got my info wrong on that, sorry! I should have double checked the actual rod before responding. I looked at the rod and I actually have the 10'6" Heavy Fast model which is rated 3-8oz. The model number is (TSTIISS-1062HF). I got it in-store at Fisherman's Headquarters in Long Beach Island (not sure if they sell the same model online but worth checking-I'm sure there are other online retailers and local tackle shops that carry it if not). Not sure why I thought it was rated 2-6oz so thank you for calling that out, I should have paid more attention. I'll go back and edit my previous comment for clarity.

      @@SaltySamFishing No worries at all! I only noticed because I’m currently looking into purchasing a 10 ft rod that is capable of tossing 6oz sinkers without me worrying that it will break. I’m in Bergen County, and the Ramsey Outdoor Store near me says online that they carry the rod you have in 10’6” rated 3-8oz. I’m definitely going to check that rod out for sure. Also, your content and channel is top notch! I look forward to watching your videos so much! Thanks again for your responses, and you have certainly helped me narrow down my rod search! You need to work on how to reeling in that fish 😂 😂😂

  • @josephchristopher7534
    @josephchristopher7534 День тому

    Maybe it's just the camera angle, but it looks like you were reeling in as the drag pulled out a good deal of the fight. That pains me to see because it puts a ton of twist in your line that makes for nasty tangles down the road. Also, you don't need to lift the fish up by its lip. That's real bad for its guts which are not well attached to its abdominal cavity. Nice outing!
