RC40 Exhaust Sound on a Classic Mini
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- The RC40 is one of the most popular exhausts available for the classic mini, and for good reason. It flows very well and has a great tone. This is a sound clip to help you decide if it's right for you.
This car has a twin box center exit RC40 exhaust with LCB manifold. The second clip is with the resonator removed. The engine is a stock 998 with a single SU HS4 carb.
Which sounds better?

Just when I thought “not loud enough” you took the resonator out! 👍🏼👍🏼
Without the resonator is much nicer! Though both does sound good.
Thanks for the video. Just did the resonator removal on my 1275 and sounds awesome. The interior noise change is barely noticeable , but the deeper exhaust note, with just the right amount of pop and crackle are well worth it.
I once put a Cherry Bomb single box on a stock 998 and it sounded AMAZING. Check the UA-cam video of the green Mini with Cherry Bomb revving (not my car) and thumbs up my comment if you agree!!!
Well I like the throatier sound for sure, so no res
Without the resonator of course. My first mini had a tuned 1300 with twin 1 1/2 carbs with an LCB and RC40 exhaust, it sounded great. Then I thought it would be a good idea to swap it for a big bore stainless system. It was louder, but it didnt sound as good, or go as well. Then my dad made up an exhaust out of bits of pipe he had laying around, and the only box it had on it was a cherry bomb. That was loud, raspy, awesome and quick.
Love an RC40. I’m running the long wheel base version on my 1293 Cooper S powered Traveller. Just rear silencer with Maniflow LCB manifold and straight pipe. Sounds awesome
resonator deleted of course, duh :-)
the video all the minifans are looking for. now you have to make one with maniflow and fletcher exhaust :D .( i just got the rc40 single box for my mk1 i wll upload a video soon)
Supply a car and we can do a video ;)
@@Stevestonmotorco i will ask my cousin he is in Canada but i dont know if he still has his mini.if yes i will tell him to contact you
All my minis have that single box setup, best sound out of a mini and ya can’t beat a centre exit
Single box setup? Whats that?
@@derjaxxer just a 2” straight pipe back with a straight through muffler at the back with and centre exit tail pipe.
With res it's alot nicer inside the car imo. but without just makes a mini loud as they are supposed to be :)
I love your videos, some day I will build a mini and hit u up for advice. keep up the amazing work!!!
The 1st sound is already nice. No need for more, unless if removing the center box improves performance which I doubt.
I prefer with resonater but sounds nice both ways
With sounds much more like a capable driver, the delete sounds like a boy racer with something to prove.
I run a free flow down pipe straight through to a MK1 sprite rear box turned on its side to get the upswept look it sound perfect
Definitely without the resonator! 😍🔥
Is this the standard bore RC40 with a 1.75 inch tailpipe or have you gone for the larger 2.25 inch exit?
I would love to see you document a proper mechanical to electric fuel pump conversion. I’m 3/4 done with mine, but I have had to figure most of it out myself.
Car sounds great! Is the exhaust tip 2" diameter do you know?
I love your videos man I’m about to purchase the RC40, LCB Manifold and the short down pipe. Super happy to hear it sounds so good. I will definetely do the resonator removal.
Would you be able to tell me what’s the lord eat exhaust for a 1275 classic mini 🙏🏼🙏🏼🫣
Just get an MGB exhaust & cut it to fit the Mini...Best sounding 4cyl exhaust sound period...👌
The classic Mark V I just bought seems to have this exhaust system on it. Am I able to buy a catalytic converter specifically for this system? Might need it for smog test.
Y'know, you could just do videos where you are just driving around and I'd watch every one.
I had a spare 5 minutes at work today and played 'Cafe Racer', just because it's a cool video and 26 sounds awesome.
Haha. Well hey, the 26 car also has an rc40 on it ;)
@@Stevestonmotorco The simple cars are the best.
Nice sound apart from that rattle at tick over. Could the system be touching something???
What size exhaust is this ?
That's the same setup I have on a 998 pickup. Love it.
Nice!
Thats exactly what I've just done, binned the middle can!
*Without the middle box it's sounds way better anyway!* And the RC40 are beloved backboxes for years. I do have a 1275cc spi mini with stock exhaust so with resonator. Could you do an exhaust test on a 1275cc mpi or spi? I'm considering a RC40 but it's a daily driver so it has to be sporty but not awful on highway trips. Stock sounds to boring.
I have the RC40 on my MPI - I think its a reasonable balance for everyday use.
Creo que tiene un sonido extraño ... podría ser bomba de combustible eléctrica ? Buen video
does putting an LCB make a 998 slower/lower performance ?
1275 with a lumpy cam, an LCB and single RC40 box exiting in the centre sounds pretty cool. Raspy and crackley.
this is my pc at 12:00 midnight 0:32
lol
My 998cc plus twin 1 1/4, LCB and original Cooper exhaust was smooth but with a fantastic bass note.
Single box rc40 has always been the best. Say no more...
I have a 1293 with stainless single box and stainless lcb from maniflow doesn't sound much until you hit 3k revs then it's like another beast.
interesting, I was thinking going stainless too. but I always wondered if it would not sound a bit like a tin pan...
I have a similar spec. Mine is loud or louder but I like it
@@mesco8200 interesting
@@benoitdupont9125 I have 304 stainless steel which doesn't degrade atall will turn a goldfish yellow from the heat. You can get 409 stainless which will degrade after a long time it gets a coating on it which looks like rust but isn't it gives a deeper note on the exhaust. I wanted something that will last a lifetime so went 304
@@JohnWilson-qf5tk thank you! If I may ask, where did you get the 409 ? custom made ?
Nice sweet and refined sound. Though very deep.
Sounds like a Diesel on tickover ?
I know it's been two years, I hope you fixed the oil pressure.
Lose the resonator. It's pointless in an A series engine.
Hallo, the second Sound is better 😉
What lights did you put in the Mini?
No resonator, definitely bro!! It sounds so legit.
Would rather not have a rolled tip on the end, it makes it rasp, without it or the resonator it sounds more naughty
Off to get a fresh blade for the Sawzall.. no resonator!
Haha!
Why used a resonator in the first place ,all mine are without sound much better.
The point is to show people what it sounds like.
Great quick MINI video. But I wonder about the song??? Can you tell me???
Sounds Great / A Red Line would be Nice.
Not sure what that rattle is.
🔥🔥 I love it🔥🔥
How loud is the exhaust note in the car? I'm going to replace my stock 1" exhaust system shortly, but I dont want it to drone while on the highway. I have noticed that most of the stage 1 kits come with the RC40. I dont mind some noise, but I am not a teenager anymore. Quiet with increased flow would be my goal.
Sounds like you would be happy with the RC40 with the resonator. It doesn't drone much at all.
Does that mini have rod knock???
No. But the fuel pump is loud so that might be what you're hearing.
@@Stevestonmotorco wondered what the hell that was, is it not rubber mounted?
Stevestonmotorco Sure sounds like something is vibrating somewhere! Very annoying.
Is it a dead head fuel supply? That would explain the thudding pump sound.
That brings back memories....
Had the single box on mine but conventional side exit. 33 years ago....
LCB was too close to the old rubber inner driveshaft coupling and use to stink after a caning 😆
No Res. is a great Classic sound for sure, great for Mini canyon carving ! I hear loud tappets or knocking though? Wazzup there.? 🇳🇿🤠
Noisy external fuel pump
mantab jiwa kang
nice
I am curious how much extra noise you get inside the car with the resonator removed? I have a RC40 that was installed by the shop that was restoring my car and it is mind bumbingly noisy in the car already.
It drones more and the difference is noticeable at cruising speed.
Most definitely without the resonator.
0:16 what’s with The knocking
fuel pump i think
Love the rattle too
Just found your channel the other day after obtaining a 1973 mini and doing some research about different mods to do to it. I loved the video and was wondering could you do a video showing how to install the exhaust and removal of the resonator thanks.
Welcome aboard! It's really easy to remove the exhaust, especially if just removing it from the bottom of the manifold. loosen things up, drop it from the hangers, and it's off.
Reso delete for sure
The resonator makes it sound muffled and restricted
These sound nice with a twin choke Weber carb too.
I also have a 15yo LCB with RC40 on my car. It's starting to rust like... well like a british car. :) I'm considering moving to Freeflow manifold + RC40 as I read that it's keeps a bit more torque. any thoughts ?
We haven't tried a freeflow first hand, so can't say :)
Free flow, more power at the bottom,LCB, more at the top.
Loving the lower throat, but not the deeper idle.
can't wait to her mine after a week at the mechanic, i've got a leaky exhaust and plenty of engine noise.
Too loud at idle?
Without resonator sounds better
So I have the RC40 exhaust on my 1275, and it sounds nothing close to this good.
Vetrius Are you running a LCB manifold?
The last sound is better
Would you mind if I used the rev audio from this video??
Go for it
My MPI Cooper had a Fletcher stainless on when I bought it - made a nice noise with pops and bangs and was beautifully made - but too loud inside for regular use. I fitted the RC40 (retaining the cat). Much better for regular use. Also had to fit the old style mountings to give enough clearance for local roads, which have numerous speed bumps. The fletched seemed to weigh about twice as much as the RC40 too.
chris penn the fletcher was too loud even with the cat?
@@xPUR3xSHOTZx yes - it was for me. It seemed to drone quite a bit when cruising on motorways and got very tiring.
Without the resonator is much nicer!
Question: Where can i find a similar rev counter?
The internets ;-) www.amazon.com/Auto-Meter-2303-Autogage-Tachometer/dp/B00062Z6EM/ref=psdc_15729791_t1_B0009SQL2E, www.autometer.com/3-3-4-tach-8-000-rpm-chrome-2248.html
Definitely no resonator!
But it should sound like a Mini... so standard exhaust is the genuine real deal.
But is an overly muffled sound the genuine sound? Hmmm
I waited to hear the classic sound that came from your Mini with std pipe - it sounded just like a Mini back in the 60’s. Back then, as a small boy I could recognise that a Mini was coming around the corner just from the classic sound it makes!
this is a big bore exhaust?
I will soon put it on my mini 😍
This is 1.75" tubing
Like..rc40 direct
Getting mine to sound better is on the list to do, other things first.
Not sure where your mini is at, but driving well > sounding good
Broke it, just had engine mounts, front shocks arrive today, new Radiator on the way. Should be running again next weekend :) Woo Hoo.
both
RC40 - the best 😎
2:18 Maniflow! :D
None.. 😄
Have you played with the new reverse megaphone yet?
Is that a thing?
@@Stevestonmotorco Very much a thing. its been a "race only" option for a while but there is a road one now. www.maniflow.co.uk/index.php?view=page&page=52
Does it run better, though? Perhaps a new needle and some adjustment to the carb is in order...
But noises are just noises. Buttocks glued to seats is what counts!!
Oh man, come on. Thats 2:31 min of wasting time.
You got better clips.
You need more ccm mate😉... But I love the centre exit.....
I got a 1275 with also LCB and rc40 single box plus k&n induction kit. Roooaaar is the sound 😄.
