- It's been 27 years since the release of the amazing puzzle game Riven. Cyan Worlds has remade Riven, from the ground up, and the new version is out now! Cyan was gracious enough to sponsor this build video where Bill makes a metal Moiety Dagger from Riven!

Thank you to the kind folks at Cyan for inviting us into your studio and letting us geek out over your props. We got to do a quick chat and tour that we'll show in a future video!
Based on how much fun y'all had here, I'm SUPER excited to see how your time at Cyan was!
Shut up and take my money.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This was such a cool build to watch, AND it was so fun to finally get to meet you in person. (having your very own linking book sure helps with the travel! )
Looking forward to seeing what folks have to say about all the goodies you dug up from our vault! AND we'll look forward to sharing what else we've got up our sleeve in the very. Near. Future!
This is a PERFECT combo of cool internet nerds, so glad you joined forces for such a cool project!
And definitely will keep an eye out for this near future stuff 👀
Thank you all! It was an absolute joy getting to work with your incredible team and be a tiny part of this big launch. 😄
@@punishedprops Hear hear!!!
Atrus! It's you! Heh. I adore Myst; am stoked for whatever you're working on in the future. This whole video made me grin like I did playing Myst the first time.
Loved seeing the delivery to Rand at Cyan Worlds. You can truly see the passion from both of you. These types of projects are some of yours and Brit’s best ones!
Britt and I were geeking out hard at Cyan--it was such an amazing experience!
YES! A cross over between my two favorite things punishes props and Riven! I’m so glad you had this chance and looks great!
Yeah!!! We're still buzzing from visiting Cyan.
I’m 41 and I remember my mom being hooked on the game myst when I was in my late teens to early 20s. I used to hear her swear silently when one of the puzzles was kicking her ass. 😂
Haha! Remember working through a puzzle with my neighbors mom. 😂
Myst and Riven are amazing in VR. When I played them I got this feeling that this is the way they were always intended to be played. They were the same as I played in the 90s, but at the same time so much more. Amazing experience.
That's so awesome
Ooh, very nice! Also, I know it's an aluminum prop and all, but I've been watching a lot of "Forged in Fire" , so all I could think of once it was done was, "But will it KEAL?" 😄
Hahaha! I so want to forge a knife, too!
Getting to work with Cyan! That's a dream come true! Nicely done!
Little Bill would never believe it! Thanks Nate!
I have watched this multiple times already and each time I’m filled with so much inspiration. Thank you for all you do and every ounce of passion you share with us all
You're so welcome!
Am I the only one who saw this as the Moiety Dagger of Theseus as Bill was replacing 3d printed parts with aluminum ones?
Either way, I always enjoy watching what you guys make!
Haha! I like that. 😂
Ah, I remember playing this when the internet was just getting its feet wet. For a few years after this came out, I felt like I was the only one who was so geeked out about these wonderful worlds, and now there is a TON of us who live with half our minds in Myst or Riven or one of the other amazing worlds that were created.
To this day, I still tell everyone that the best game ever made was MYST then followed up by RIVEN. I was SO in love with these when they first came out. It has completely shaped my gameplay experience to this day. I just bought this new version. I can't WAIT to play it.
Right?? Those games shaped the way I feel about what’s possible in video games for decades!
The Myst games were and are absolutely amazing, and your project was an incredible tribute. Wonderful!
Thank you! 😄
Amazing. The Myst series has been one of my favourite game series of all time. It's awesome that you got to make that dagger for them for the new version of Riven. I just got my copy installed and I'm diving in 🙂
That's so great!
You can tell by the way Rand kept saying "oh my goshhh" that he's really impressed by Bill's work🤭 He even took off his glasses to look closely!!!
Rand is such a treasure.
A beautiful finished piece.
Thank you! :)
I can definitely believe the “sanding footage drive” is full. Keep up the good work.
Haha! I’m glad you noticed that one. 🤣
Beautiful work!
The original Riven box contained a catalogue to order souvenirs, including a (smaller) Moiety knife, Catherine’s outfit, and Gehn’s gun.
Yes! They partnered with Museum Replicas Limited. I'm kicking myself for not ordering those props when they were available.
Incredible work 👏👏
Thank you!
Ah the serendipity, Adam Savage had to solve the same big hole in aluminum problem with his bank door.
Oh that’s right!
Adam Savage is also responsible for designing the dagger in the first place. Funny how it all comes around.
Oh! An almost entire spicy-dust & danger spaghetti episode, very cool!
The danger spaghetti got me a couple times too. You might have noticed a bandaid show up half way through the video. 😂
Aww heck! Gonna go buy Riven asap. I got stuck on URU so badly now I gotta redeem myself.
You’re gonna LOVE it.
Awesome job Dude...
Thank you!
It looks so good! Great job!
Thank you so much!
super cool video Bill. Thanks
You're welcome Hugo!
I just watched your jinx butterfly video and I want to be you when I grow up
Awe, thank you
always beautiful 🤩
Thank you so much!
I recently discovered your channel and have devoured all your videos. I am always amazed by the results. I would love to start making costumes, weapons, armor, and accessories myself, but the cost of the materials to get started is quite high.
Gosh you probably get asked this question a lot but, is there a way to recycle the aluminium? Like melt the snippets down or something for another project? Or not worth it/ too many impurities if you do?
Yes we're keeping all of our aluminum scrap. Some day we'll build a furnace hot enough to melt aluminum and we can try sand casting.
Getting to visit the Cyan holy land... Oh, definitely jealous!
It was so incredible!
now i’m wondering if you could cast the 3D prints in greensand with melted soda cans TKOR style
I would love to try that! I'm keeping all the aluminum off cuts.
Super cool! Only makes me feel a tad bit ancient... 😉
Me too, buddy :)
Why would that lathe chuck not hold the Al puck you started with? With reversed jaws, of course.
The reversed jaws were also not large enough for my stock.
can't you rotate the three clamps to fit bigger pieces??
You can, but even the larger jaws wouldn't fit the 3.25" diameter stock I got.
@@punishedprops love your content thanks for all the vids.
I’d love to see that entire unit nickel plated! Wahoo.
Oooh that would be spectacular!
Aluminum CNC looks a lot better than aluminum cold cast powder. I know you used to do molding, Bill, do you have a recommendation for a brighter, silvery casting powder?
I've tried the Cast Magic powders too but that's sometimes hit or miss. They only coat the mold, not mix into the resin, and making sure the mold is coated evenly is sometimes difficult, especially long, thin 1 piece molds. Like for example, Blade's silver stakes.
My go-to for bright cold casting metal powder has always been aluminum, but I haven't tried everything that's available.
Who'd have thought "Riven: The Sequel to Myst" was a sequel to Myst?
Instead of all those machining hours, you should've tried your hand at sand casting. Oh well another time, Awesome build!
I would so love to try sand casting! We rent our house, so no welding or stuff hotter than pewter allowed.
Even in the backyard? 😢
Hey you have to switch your 'Days Glitter-Free' fact board back to 'Zero' Bill and Britt! I mean, glitter is metal shavings after all, right??? ^_^
It's true...
That would have also been neat sand cast.
Some day I would love to try sand casting!
@@punishedprops there ARE several casting channels here on YT...
*steps back, and starts vibrating*
Wasn't that Aluminum you were tapping threads in (on the blade), Bill? maybe I may give an advice I learned from an old german Master-Craftman long time ago, he said : Best and only working Cutting Fluid on Aluminum is Petroleum. So far I can only say that it always worked for me using Petroleum instead of the normal stuff, maybe you might want to give it a try yourself next time. ;)
Oh interesting! I'll have to try that next time.
Ah yes patina also known as lack of maintenance.
Haha, I like that!
"Is this a top, will this spin?"
"... No, it won't." but thank you for trying! I would have done the same thing ❤
Edit: IT CAN! Though we are still not in Inception
Oh yeah I couldn’t give up. 😂
Not to armchair machinist... well, maybe a little ;). Pretty sure you can flip the jaws on your lathe. Would have sped up the roughing of the pommel significantly, i think.
Yes, I do have a reversed set of lathe jaws, but they were also too small for this piece.
That’s one big italian cold steel cinquedea…😊 @drawfee
Fire
Thanks!
err bill you realise you could have used a hole saw of the right diameter
Interesting idea. I don't have a hole saw that big, yet.
@@punishedprops would be a lot simpler than a jigsaw
It's kind of unfair that you show how things are designed/built with traditional methods, but when it's digital you just jump cut it. Show us what it means to get it ready and working for the CNC machine, not just "and then it was done". You don't do it with the other steps, why do it with software?
When you're shooting a video on a project like this, deciding how much to get into the weeds with technical things like CAD/CAM is a real back-and-forth decision. The more we show, the fewer people watch the video, but the less we show, the less comprehensive value the video has. Something we're always tweaking. Thanks for the feedback.
Really losing expectations due to not everyone being able to afford all your machines like, lathes & 3D printers...
