Teaching virtuosi! All music teachers should watch this and use it in their classes. Young teachers especially! #rhythmisafundamental
It would be great to see where these beginners are today!
I had the same epiphany about 4 years ago, after reading David Newell's "Teaching Rhythm." I don't specifically remember him writing about the dot in the book (I've read it about 3 times, some sections dozens of times), but I ended up writing like it like that. Makes a ton of sense.
Thank you for doing this depth of research!!! So Awesome!!
I really love this! I’m wondering if this method would be appropriate for teaching an early years choir? I am not a music teacher, but have taken on helping to coordinate a recreational homeschool children’s choir. Up until this point all the ages are together with one conductor but we are seeing the value (and numbers of children) to break into two groups. I would be working with the younger children (5-9) with the goal of teaching them music foundations so when they get to the stage of being able to read the words on their music- they can also know what the notes mean. Just wondering if this might be too much for little ones- and if so if there is a different method to start with younger children?
My question would be, how do you deal with cut time and compound 6/8 and 12/8?
Absolutely genius,
So a half note and two quarter notes would be counted: Wu uh uh uh Three ee Four or? With four pulses on the half note?
Yes!
HEY DARCY - Is it possible to get a copy of your rhythm charts?
I was recently introduced to your book and really like everything you have to say! I'm old-school, though, and am curious where I can purchase a copy? Thanks!
At 23.41 it says the number of beats is 6 and number of pulses as 8. If I follow the other examples shouldn't that be 12 pulses?
I was wondering the exact same thing!
This was completely mind blowing and I've done 3 years of high school so this week was my first time teaching beginning band. I had no clue what to do but your book saved me and my 5th graders rock!
question, why did you create an all chicken playlist?
I am so glad that TRL was so helpful in your beginning band transition! :) The chicken playlist is for Chicken Day. If you haven't found our podcast yet, it's called After Sectionals. We have an entire episode on Chicken Day. :)
Very cool
Loving everything but can't get passed that. Pulsing
Excellent presentation! I'm very interested in using these tools.
I disagree that teachers ask questions before the principle has been taught, assuming that there's a kid who probably knows the answer.
Movies do this all the time. The teacher is just asking questions instead of teaching.
Tell kids that the symbol is a quarter note then say, "it's called a what?" And let them all have a chance to respond, "quarter note!"
I think that's fair -- you don't want to ask a question the kids may not know the answer to. I think in this context, though (the Day 1 lesson of quarter notes), you get kids who've had general music and very likely remember the quarter note.
From there, in Darcy's system, you're teaching from known to new, so theoretically, all they need to know to start learning rhythm with them is the quarter note. (Plus, this system -- and good teaching in general, imo -- lends itself to leading students to the answer more often than telling them the answers. It's a learned balance (leading vs. telling), and everyone knows their own students best and should do what's best for them!)
