I had an hiv scare last year. I immediately went to the clinic, they put me on prep. And 30 days later i was tested, no hiv. It works! No side affects.
There is no way to know that PEP worked for you. That's like saying I take a multivitamin daily which prevents many health related issues. People often don't contract the virus their first exposure to it.
At 19 years old I just started PrEP 4 days ago and couldn’t be happier, no real side effects besides nausea but that’s to be expected for the first week. It’s amazing how far science has come.
It's amazing how quickly medicine advances. Since this video came out, the number of medicines used for PrEP has gone from 1 to 3! Some protocols do not even need daily PrEP!
@@mikalhandy6957well, its to be expected. given risky behaviours such as promiscuous sex, the onus of responsibly consuming PrEP may go unfulfilled by those who would contract them
I took prep for a month because a friend of a relative had a dirty needle in her bag(she is a junkie) and she came over to my aunts place with my relative and I was talking to her and I use my hands alot when I talk and I hit her hand bag with my hand and got pricked. So I went to hospital and told them what happened and she was a high risk for hiv and I found out later she didn't have hiv so I didn't even need it but oh well peace of mind is better than taking the chance. The side affects were bad for me but that's because I have liver damage so if you have a bad liver don't take it every day, only take it when you are at risk.
Valentin Blaison lol I know I'm sorry I didn't realise at the time and after wards I was like oops, definitely meant pep and it was pep. So your saying pep is stronger side affects than prep? And prep is before exposure and pep is post yeah? Thanks for correcting my comment as I would not want others to get it wrong because of me.
Truvada is a 2-in-1 combination of Emtricitabine and Tenofovir. Before Gilead was able to stabilize the compounds into a single pill, HIV patients like myself had to take Truvada along with a second pill (third drug) called Sustiva (Efavirenz). Several years back, they finally managed to combine all three drugs into one pill, which was marketed as Atripla. But I've not heard of there being any need for Efavirenz in the prophylactic use of the drug therapy for HIV negative patients. Sustiva had some pretty nasty side effects such as rash, liver problems, and mental health issues, so I wouldn't expect them to include it in a regimen of prevention when Truvada works perfectly well without the assistance of Sustiva in preventing HIV transmission. If you were given Atripla as a pre-exposure prophylaxis, it may have been due to your pharmacy's inventory only being stocked with Atripla instead of plain old Truvada, or it could be they just didn't know the difference. Education for doctors and pharmacists on the subject of PrEP has been shamefully inadequate.
I just started PrEP and feel like shit for half the day. But this is the same with all my friends. If your watching this thinking I'm one of the 22 your not. Is very normal

Hey! Could you maybe explain why the HIV virus is so dodgy? And why ecactely does the medicament described in the video no cure AIDS? And if you could maaaybe give us an update on where cures for AIDS stand today, that would be great! Thanks a lot for the video!
This is a great question! The reason PrEP does not cure HIV is because the virus is constantly changing and becoming resistant to therapy. So one medication (in this case PrEP) when taken after HIV infection would lead to resistance. Taking PrEP before HIV exposure does not give the virus time to infect cells and establish infection. So the problem of resistance does not occur when PrEP is taken before HIV exposure, it's only a problem if PrEP is taken alone after HIV infection. HIV treatment consists of blocking multiple HIV proteins and pathways to reduce the risk of the virus becoming resistant and PrEP is not sufficient to do this. I hope this helps answer your question!
yes thank you very much! Does that mean, if a mother that has HIV takes PrEP and she is pregnant, does that mean the child would also become resistant to PrEP? Now my knowledge ends. When is the child infected with HIV? already when it is growing inside or when the birth happens, where we can also see the danger of things like the Rhesus factor. Would it be possible to give a child of a HIV infected mother PrEP before their blood mixes up and the child gets infected? Or am I entirely wrong here when i assume the time of the HIV infection? Thanks in advance!
MrJoeRedford Unfortunately I am not able to give medical advice. From what I know, the lower the viral load in the mother, the lower the risk of HIV transmission from mother to child. In order to achieve this, a mother should take her regular HIV medication during pregnancy, not PrEP which is for PRE-exposure. As far as I know, HIV can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, labor or delivery so it's important for the mother to keep taking her HIV medication to keep viral load low and reduce the risk of HIV transmission to the child. Hope that helps.

If you know, how does truvada block hiv reverse transcriptase . How does it detect it in the first place. Also, are there tests so someone could know if the prep levels in your body are sufficient.
It seems that way I know, but we all pay either way. The only real difference is in the UK, the healthy pay high taxes into a service they don’t use, and the sick pay high taxes to use services without worrying about paying at the point of sale. In the US, the healthy pay very little or nothing at all for the services they don’t use, and the sick pay for the full amount. It’s basically just choosing between having the government take all your money or your doctor doing it

Pre play 10s check, check yourself for groin sores, hemmroids, and if sharing needle is planned or any scar tissue caused by these 3 symptoms. Low risk of infection if don't have these symptoms/high risk of getting infected if have them.
Yes, prep is essentially the same as one of the 6 primary ways HIV is fought post-exposure. To fight HIV you have to take meds using two or three of the six possible methods for life. Prep works by using one of these methods before HIV takes hold, preventing it from doing its dirty work to begin with. Think of it like calling the police to your house to post up there before you are victimized. It’s one of the same officers that would have shown up after you were victimized, but him being there ahead of time stopped it from occurring.

Truvada is also prescribed to people who are living with HIV. Truvada is a reverse transcriptase inhibitor (HARRT) and PrEP. Atripla is a combination of drugs into one, and one of those meds is Truvada. Which sparked the question, why is Atripla not considered a PrEP med too?
Xydney Blumstein Two reasons. (1) If the third drug is not necessary for prevention and can't significantly enhance it, there's no reason to take an additional drug, with its potential side-effects. (2) More importantly, Truvada is the only drug for which a full course of clinical trials have been completed for PrEP. Clinical trials are expensive and time-consuming, so rather than spend time on more expensive, more complex drug combos, drug companies are focusing on new and different drugs that will potentially have even lower resistance and side-effect profiles than Truvada's already-low ones, as well as new and additional delivery methods such as anal and vaginal gels and monthly-to-quarterly injectables.
