Thats because when Hollywood wants the help of the US military, the script has to be approved by the Pentagon, wich means the movie cant be critical (like FMJ, Platoon) and has to be basically a recruitment movie (Top Gun).
"Das Boot" - The best is the long version with the original sound and English subtitles. The dialogue is limited and the English dubbing is not really good. The long version can be a bit long-winded at times, but the idea is that most of the time nothing happens at sea and that after weeks the sailors are happy to finally fire their torpedoes at the enemy to make room in the narrow tube (the torpedoes were stored in the boat) and to be able to get on land.
The actor, who plays the war correspondent in "Das Boot" became a very popular singer in Germany - you should react to his song "Der Weg" - it is an amazing song and the English subs are adequate: Herbert Grönemeyer - Der Weg Live 2003 - Mensch Tour (Gelsenkirchen)[Subtitle]
I would recommend "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" or the English Titel "Generation War" - It is a 3 Part Mini-Series If possible i would watch it in the original Language with Subtitles.
Basically, ANY movie about war coming from Germany doesn't romanticize or depicts honorably the actions performed during war. I haven't seen too many German (vs international) war movies, but those I have seen are all ANTI-war movies. None of them depict any characters as heroic participants on the field of battle. All of them show the horrible tragedies humans inflict on each other, hammering home that war isn't something that should be considered a solution, but rather a problem that affects all people on all sides involved. When it comes to "Das Boot" there isn't an anti-war movie I could recommend higher than this. It's one of the rare looks at the submarine warfare from a German perspective. The 90% mindboggling boredom of sitting in a submerged can, waiting, looking for targets, missing them constantly, which is then turned into the 10% of terrifying instances of battle that will leave even the hardest of veterans shellshocked. This movie is one of those where anyone is drawn into empathy for, and siding WITH the German sailors on board the submarine; at least in one scene. However this wouldn't be a German anti-war movie if it didn't leave you with a hollow pit in your stomach when the final credits roll. For me it is THE best anti-war movie ever made, sharing a number one spot with maybe one other movie.
for me the best cut of Das Boot is the six hour mini series, it doesn't have the sound mix upgrade of the directors cut released in 1997. but it really makes you feel like you did a tour on a submarine
The Bridge gotta be one of the more depressing ones as it also highly depicts the pointlessness of blind fanatic patriotism and the connected loss of life. No spoilers here of course but it's definitly worth watching.
Some other good ones are e.g. Der Transport / Destination Death (1961), 08/15 (1954/1955) or Fabrik der Offiziere (1960). Going a bit weirder, and leaving WW2, one could add Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972).
The best friend of my father said once to me, that he is not afraid of nukes because he saw men dying with bajonett wounds in their bellies. Wars were all terrible throughout history.
I can highly recommend Generation war. Its a mini-series about a few teen-friends who start enthusiastic into ww2 and get a reality check pretty soon (a few of them die). Sadly this Series got a lot of critisism because A: It showed some "poor innocent" German soldiers who dont want to be in this war (and you know, in movies every German soldier has to be evil) and B: it shows polish resistance fighters not wanting to help jews because they dont like them (and of course except Germany everyone loved jews). I like it anyway.
Love your reaction as always. If you find the time you could react to “Es ist an der zeit” by Hannes Wader. It is a bit niche but I think you will like it. The live version with Reinhard Mey and Konstantin Wecker has english subtitles ;)
@Mace Since your own list of war movies is pretty Vietnam/WWII focused you should watch ... WATERLOO ... and there is a "fan edit" on YT where they added in extra scenes that were cut through inserting stills or film without sound. The movie is VERY SPECIAL, because it has no special effects and every soldier you see is real ... played by soldiers of the Red Army from the Soviet-Union .. and the battle scenes were filmed in Ukraine (they might have even "landscaped" the hills a bit, because that country is FLAT ...
Does anyone know Reiner Werner Fassbinder's "Ali - Fear Eats the Soul" from 1974 (original title: "Angst essen Seele auf")? It is my favourite German movie.
A good war film is "The Bridge". The German army is in defeat and retreating. Everyone tries to save their skin from the experienced soldiers. But a group of young people still believe in the final victory and are fiercely defending their position at the bridge. The young people courageously face the advancing superiority of the American tanks with their light weapons. The young people try to shoot the tanks with their rifles. But the tank just turns the turret and fires back.
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 Idk, maybe there is quota for bad movies they have to fullfill, or the diretor though there arent enough klisches and modern views pressed into the movie.

Most German war films tell a deep story and often there are no "winners" at the end. Many American war films are action films that show heroes.

The TV mini-series version expands on the topic even more. I highly recommend to watch it if you find it.
If you want to go inside a submarine like the one used in "Das Boot" ... there is a "museum" which has one near Kiel.
Just a helpful hint for pronounciation: "servus" has the emphasis on "ser", not on "vus". Love your channel!

I’m not obsessed with them any more than other genres. Full Metal Jacket is one of my all time favourites though.
You should read "Notes on Hitler" by Sebastian Haffner to put it into perspective...
