A level that starts you out with no badge but has alternate/secret routes that equip you with certain badges could be really cool. Either for various challenges or maybe a metroidvania-style level
Ooh, nice! It could also require specific badges in the main area to be able to reach other badges until you finally have the badge that's required to reach the flag!
Rimea, your accomplishment in unraveling the intricacies of modding badges within Super Mario Bros. showcases an exceptional level of expertise and innovation. As a software engineer myself, the developers have gone above and beyond what is required to make a game. They 100% went with the mentality of Convention over configuration. This certainly opens up the door for popping out new games with little programming effort, and maybe even a Mario Wonder Maker game.
I’ve had this weird idea for a wonder effect that changes your badge every x amount of seconds which might actually be possible using the badgemedley somehow, this was a great video!
Dude, Wonder modding is gonna be so fucking good, I can already tell! It's only kinda shitty now because we don't have proper editors/knowledge of how every mechanic works. Once we have both of those things... the sky's gonna be the friggin' limit, I swear! Cannot wait for it, honestly!
I've got a topic I'm curious about: End-of-Level photos. When you beat a level, it shows a snapshot from the level. So three questions: 1. Does it actually screenshot the level, or show something similar they've previously stored? I'd assume the former. 2. What does it use to determine when to do the snapshot? 3. Can you make it show a different picture from what should normally appear, e.g. the title screen?
1. it is a proper in-game screenshot since I've never noticed anything looking off when playing with mods, which would probably happen if some aspect of the picture was pre-rendered or whatever 2. I haven't looked into this one too much, but I have seen some stuff that indicates every level might have a different variable that can trigger a potential photo point, like jumping on a specific enemy or collecting something 3. The screenshot must be saved in the game's save data, so if an editor were made for that I'd presume it would be possible to swap out the picture, though I don't really see the point of that
yes they are, I believe there's an object that gets placed in the background which is linked to another area and loads it in at its position, though I haven't actually messed around with it myself yet, might be worth exploring in a future video
Even tho It's only the beginning, these are huge discoveries! I think you can already cook with these known infos! Who knows what the fututre will bring in!
I would definitely change the Wall jump badge only being activated when you press R Bumper, its annoying how it can mess up Wallkicking but i like the idea too
to have a bonus room with a badge that unequips it afterwards, maybe exiting the bonus room drops you into another room with different pipes, each with a badge sign by it, and each leads you to a room that just drops you to the main level again, but that room equips the badge from the pipe bam, not a stupidly messy solution at all
Can someone make Badge Challenges for all the badges that don't have Badge Challenges? Badge Challenge: Fast Dash (Jump over large gaps and chase the talking flowers for the 10-coins) Badge Challenge: Timed High Jump (Similar to Badge Challenge: Floating High Jump) Powerup Challenge: Elephant (Jump and climb on single blocks, dig a path upwards through bricks, bring water from the start to the end for a 10-coin) Powerup Challenge: Fire (Hit distant targets with bouncing fireballs) Powerup Challenge: Bubble (Climb to the top by jumping off bubbles) Powerup Challenge: Drill (Sneak past enemies and cling to ceilings) Badge Challenge: Safety Bounce (Bounce on lava to reach the top) Badge Challenge: Sensor (Search Party: An Empty Park? with Sensor Badge) Badge Challenge: Rhythm Jump (More difficult version of Ninji Jump Party) Badge Challenge: ! Blocks (A level made entirely out of ! blocks) Coins Galore 2 (Defeat enemies with Coin Reward badge) Coins Galore 3 (Use the coin magnet to grab coins from afar) WONDER? (Showcases almost every sound effect that is changed by the Sound Off? badge)
It's impressive to see games nowadays being built with self-documented text files that are so easy to modify. You would assume that Nintendo, being the anti-piracy company it is, would rather use a highly obfuscated and encrypted format for the final release precisely to hinder modding - it's an interesting surprise to see their internal development teams opting not to make their own lives harder
Yes and no; I don't go into in this video but all these config files are compressed using a proprietary format that Nintendo uses for many of its games. The only reason they're so easy to edit right out of the gate is that modders have had years to develop tools to access and edit these files.
I think you should make a badge that gives the characters their abilities (Peach with floating, Luigi with higher jumps and slippery controls, and Toad with S P E E D
Floating High Jump is the Luigi badge, Crouching High Jump is the Mario badge and Fast Dash is the Toad badge. The closest thing there is to a Peach badge is Parachute Cap but a proper Peach badge reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2 would be a nice mod.
@@ps2maneverything417 their could probably be a mod that makes the hat in parachute cap peach and turn peach invisible when doing it to make it look like floating
I wonder: is it possible to change badges in the middle of a level, separate from the area equip setting? I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not have the final badge be one that gives you a random badge effect and changes effect periodically
Could you possibly make a badge for yoshi to flutter jump continuously like in yoshi’s island instead of just once? And for yoshi to be able to lick upwards? A guy could dream…
So far I’ve been watching you and been super excited to watch the modding progress but I’ve noticed you’re only editing and essentially replacing existing things in the game. Is there anyway to add new stuff yet? For example a completely new character instead of editing an old one
modding almost always comes down to replacing rather than adding, the way games are built and systems are intertwined makes it very hard to add something as complicated as a new player
Adding new content is WAY harder than changing existing content, especially in a proprietary engine like what Nintendo uses. Most games that have significant modding communities where new content can be added either use an off-the-shelf engine with readily available tooling (Unity, Unreal, Source, etc.) or have official modding support (Skyrim, Factorio, etc.). There are a few outliers that have been reverse-engineered to the point that they can be fully modified with no official support or tooling (Minecraft Java Edition being the prime example), but this is pretty rare. Super Mario Wonder could eventually reach that point given its popularity and the sheer potential for modded content, but it's going to take years of concerted effort by the modding community to get there.
the video was incredible but I have a question, is it possible to put the last badge rainbow in a level or to put the blue badges it would be nice to see if it's possible if anyone knows the answer if it's possible or not respond to my comment

I suppose I should've mentioned this in the video; I did try applying multiple badges to an area at once but that didn't work
That would have been awesome! Imagine the super soldier badge… (Fast Dash + Floating High Jump + Parachute Cap)
I could see the parachute cap going upwards being used in a neat upward breeze level

with the auto badges you could make like a giant puzzle level where you go into rooms to equip new badges and gain new abilities
