    That double end knife will fix your problem. All of our sickle bar mowers had them. Thank you for your videos. Brings back fond memories of my life on the farm.

    Those old cubs were great tractors. My grandfather had one that he used for everything from plowing the lane to plowing the garden and some of the smaller fields. This was before roundup and no till corn so culivators were used to keep the weeds down until the corn was too high..

      farmall1 farmall1 Sounds like a great project! If you need new parts, I’ve had good luck with Webb Cutting Components. Sickle bars are great for mowing fencelines, just stay vigilant... when a Sickle section encounters a “t” post, the post usually wins!

    Locktight and proper torque will prevent bolts from loosening up.

    Is that a Coast Guard sweat you have on? I was in the USCG, but retired from the Army as a watercraft technician (MK). I also noticed the watch band; and yes I have a 53 Cub, and love the machine! Great Video, clear and concise! I also located your sweat, the CGC Swordfish, Semper Paratus! I subscribed!

    Great video! Can you tell me size and type of bolts used to mount to belly of tractor? Mine keeps coming off no matter how much torque I use. The inside of hooks are beveled. I can tell if it’s from wear or supposed to be that way

    • @vnthomas16

      Heat Em Up Kennels, I believe it’s a 5/8” bolt, that said, it is a special “IH implement bolt” that has a cone shaped head. The mower bracket is indeed supposed to have the bevel. If you haven’t already, you should check out the forum at farmallcub . com. Lots of good info there. I’m sure someone there could give you a source of supply for the implement bolts.

    Very informative video. Everything patiently explained. I have a question you probably haven't experienced as you are young and strong enough to handle the cutter bar and the coupling bar in one piece. Since I am 30 years older than I was the last time I used my Cub 22 mower, I would like to disconnect the two and mount them one at a time. But I can't figure out how to get them apart. Only one pin is removeable and that is where the problem lies. There is not enough clearance to jockey them apart. Any ideas that I am not thinking of to solve this problem?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  3 роки тому

      Hmmmm... Not sure. I don’t think they were designed to be taken apart with regularity or ease. I’ve heard of folks needing presses to separate them. One thing I’ve seen people use is a flat furniture dolly. They balance the sickle bar on it and then just roll the whole thing under the tractor. I might try that. Good luck!

    • @joeschueler8587
      @joeschueler8587 3 роки тому

      @@vnthomas16 Thanks for the effort. I was thinking they are not made to come apart. But then I noted on a spare "for parts" mower that I have in an old shed that it has been taken apart and has been left in two pieces. But you are probably right: They are not made to be taken apart very often. Seems odd, but then these mowers were designed and built in a time when few jobs were done by one man working alone. There was usually a family member or a neighbor who could be called upon to help with "two-man jobs."

    How does this compare to a typical lawnmower? I would assume a regular lawn mower design is superior because they quit the sickle mowers a long time ago.

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  2 роки тому

      Sickle bar mowers are still quite popular and available new. They have made several advancements in the technology over the years however. The advantage they have for haymaking is they only cut the grass once, rather than chopping it up like a rotary mower might. If you’re not trying to make hay, but rather just mow a field for weed control or whatnot, then a rotary mower would be the tool of choice. Thanks for watching!

    • @robertpayne2717
      @robertpayne2717 2 роки тому

      Had a friend who used a sickle mower to clip his ditches around the farm. Safer than trying to use a tractor with rotary mower.

    • @vnthomas16

      Are you referring to the pulley on the PTO? That one is quite expensive. I can’t recall the exact price, but they were proud of it. You might be able to find a used one though. Best of luck!

      I use over-serrated “self-sharpening” sections. If I need to, I may touch them up with an angle grinder. If I nailed a rock or something and they’re real bad I just replace it.

    Be careful with dogs running around while mowing. We lost our family dog due to jumping over the sickle bar. Cut its back legs.
