I think there's a place for divorce with adultery, abandonment or abuse within a marriage. However, with all there things I think the "Irreconcilable differences" clause needs to be kicked into touch as I see it as the camels nose under the tent, and this will get stretched through mission creep into a "No fault divorce" and that has worked so well here in the west, hasn't it?

It's really a womens rights issue. I am strongly against divorce but highly in favor of compensation for agreaved parties. Abandoned women and their children must have a legal mechanisim to force support from fathers.

No-fault divorce in America has made divorce too easy to dissolve a bond that was intended to be lifelong

I doubt 'no fault divorce' will pass in the Philippines. When it comes to the division of assets, I will have to look that up.

I am an american in the U.S. I support the right to divorce but I think here in the U.S it is too easy. Also, I would agree with many in the philippines on the ban of same sex marriages. Here in the U.S we allow men to marry men and women to marry women. Personally, I think this is making a mockery of marriage. Here in this country 70% + of same sex marriages end in divorce. It's a joke. So please Philippines hold the ground. Do not allow same sex marriage. Aside from my little rant this was a very informative post. Thank you.

I agree with the points you made on same sex marriage.
Senator Escudero suggested an alternative of same sex partnership (civil union), which will allow same sex couples to combine their finances and assets. I think some Filipinos are more open to that idea.

Yes, an idea or plan called "a civil union" was proposed here in the U.S years ago before same sex marriage was allowed. But the liberals would not go for it. They wanted FULL marriage rights or nothing. A civil union would have allowed same sex couples the same benefits of a married couple but without the marriage certificate. I think I could have supported that.

I met a lovely woman online from the Philippines a few years ago. We lost contact. 10 years later she found me again. She was working in Malayisa and I was in Thailand.
I flew to meet her.
We had a fantastic time together.
I went back to Thailand and her and I stayed in contact.
My situation in Thailand changed.
I asked her if she was married or had any children.
She told me was still married but left her husband many years ago. No children at all.
Her husband was still alive.
Her and I talked about divorce etc.
But you know the situation.
I made more enquiries about us living together.
Found out that would be illegal for us to live together and what could happen.
After much soul searching . I decided it was to risky.
I miss her very much and still often think about her.
that was about 7 years ago.
I feel very sad because we were both mature adults.
I am sure there are others this has happened too.
So sad.

The Philippines has the best laws regarding marriage in the world! The amount of sexual sin that is just out in the open in the west disgusts me and its a breath of fresh air to see a society with real moral values built into the law. If someone commits adultery here they just get away with it and you cant do anything. The damage that divorce does to families and society as a whole far outweighs the inconvenience of not being able to separate and remarry. Its better to stay with someone you hate than for your kids to grow up without a parent.
And shame on all the western men who pursue married Filipinas. It doesn't matter if she is separated it is still wrong

I hope this bill passes. Religion should stay out of politics. Not everyone in the Philippines is a Catholic (many Protestant churches accept divorce) and of those that are, many do not believe in all the Catholic church's moral teachings (most Catholics see nothing wrong with contraception, for example).

I respectfully disagree. It should not be a government issue or a woman’s rights or a man’s rights. It does belong to the church. Most people want a church wedding it’s biblical if there was to be a divorce. It should take place through the church elders, seek out counseling through your church. Maybe you can save your marriage, just my opinion.
