12 gauge definitely. Between the different types of shot you can take any game in north America. Would use my stevens bolt action 12g with the adjustable choke. A relic but reliable.

    • @Valorius

Neither. A .38/357 magnum lever action is quite arguably the very best possible option for a survival/SHTF rifle.

@@williampratt4791 If you're in grizzly bear or mountain lion country? Run into two legged predators (who are statistically the biggest threat in the woods, which most people don't realize)? A .22 bolt action is objectively a very very limiting choice.

12 gauge single with a 22lr adapter plus a brass adapter for primers used for dog training lets me use it as a muzzleloader. The. 22 adapter can also be used for muzzleloading with blanks from my powerhammer as ignition. I also carry a home made hand loading kit for the shot shells with number 5 shot buckshot and. 69 cal. Musket balls. The barrel is full length as cutting it also reduces range and accuracy. The barrel has a rib on which I've installed turkey sights and marked the .22 adapter so I can orient it the same way to gain consistency and accuracy. I don't kneed the fashion statement so I don't waste my time weaving a sling I wrap cordage around the stock and use an adjustable sling that can be used over t shirt or parka. If conflict is expected I grab the pump.

Nice build. I would definitely pick a .22 over the 12 ga. Simply due to the reasons you mentioned. When it comes to a survival situation more ammo is always better than less.

For the sling, get the wazoo cache belt and make a sling out of that. That way you can use the stock for more ammo and rifle related gear and survival gear inside the sling.

.22 bolt action. One of those kids training rifles. They are short enough to fit inside a big backpack, and if you take them apart then they will fit into a medium ruck too. And you can carry a boat load of ammo.

I have a .22 single shot for my “emergency” gun. I keep .22 LR, .22 shorts as well as .22 birdshot on hand. Space inside the stock for a Mylar blanket, lighter, water tablets, flashlight and a knife. I also added a stock pouch holding everything needed for the gun along with ammo. It’s a shotgun stock pouch, which means the elastic loops are sized to hold Rx pill canisters. I have 6 canisters, two each for fire starting and first aid, one for fishing and one for making a slingshot with steel ammo.
Added a similar sling made with 100’ of 550 tinder cord. Added a horizontal-carry belt pouch onto the sling with a multitool.
It’s pretty heavy, but it lives in the back window of my truck so if I need to hike it home any distance I can grab my backpack and my gun and go.

Jason - I cringed when I saw those tiny black screws from the stock & butt plate. Please drill a few 1/4" holes on the side of your stock and superglue some round neodymium magnets flush. @Valorius 2 роки тому +1

@@ONThree Does it lock into place in the breech to prevent counter rotation? The 8" might help a lot even if it doesn't because it probably has enough mass to counter the torque applied by a small .22LR projectile.

    • @maxpinson5002
      @maxpinson5002 2 роки тому +2

      The barrel adapters I've used
have o-rings to hold it in place
and don't shift with any shots.
      They're plenty accurate for what
they are and you can take game
      at reasonable ranges.
No, they don't constitute a target
rifle, but in a shtf scenario you
won't be making long range shots
      and you'd be avoiding firefights
      at all costs.

Great video, I really appreciate the content you are putting out Jason. If i can though, I'd actually argue that manual actions may be worse in a survival situation.
The force exerted on the bolt of a semi-autimatic firearm makes it much more likely to run (or to push through the carbon/dirt) that will accumulate over time.
You could also argue that the ease of disasembling/maintaining your firearm is more important thab whether it is semi-auto or manually operated. A bolt action is very easy to maintain in the field, as is a 10/22 if you stick an alleb wrench in your pack. A lever action, however, may be more complicated to maintain given the number of small components you need to remove to fully disassemble the firearm.

    Respectfully disagree on a couple
    of things
Just me- I want any cordage to
be ready for immediate use, and
not have to unravel a bracelet or
a sling or a belt, etc.
I realized that in the scouts many
years back. After you unravel your
belt, how do you hold your pants up?
I never sacrifice a piece of serviceable gear.
Also, I've already been the carrying
extra gear on the rifle route with
    ammo slings, stock packs, survivor
stocks, etc. All that fouls up the
balance of the firearm ( to me)
and isn't as rapid to access as a

    .22
Because you can easily carry hundreds of rounds of ammo, and because it's quiet.

    Differentiate “Survival”:
    -Game Hunting Rifle…this video
    12 ga: #4, #7, Slug
    -Self Defense Rifle 12ga 00BK
    -Assault Rifle 5.56
12 ga is flexible and reloadable
Round size/weight …..how many do you practically need to carry?
    Too much time with Dustin…..😉

whenever a man tells me that his very life is only worth a very few hundred $, I tend to agree with him. :-) Me, I want the very best rifle and I could not care less if it costs $2000 (including all of the accessories) I'd pay $3000 if I HAD to do so, but I"d bitch and moan a lot. :-)

    I pick .22 . I'm better with my 22 than I am with my 12 guage.
