Dont know if anyone cares but if you're stoned like me atm you can stream all of the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my gf recently =)
I looked for Jerry Hadley's bio after reading the comments here. Did not know his personal story: what a huge loss for the world! I hope he has found peace.
I agree! I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. What a brilliant composer. I had the fortunate luck of sitting next to him in a restaurant near Lincoln Center. He was generous of spirit, warm, humble, and even shared his food with us.The experience is embedded in my soul. And--this music--there are no words!
LOL I'm a 22 year old college student, and I literally just tried to show this to one of my friends and I had to stop talking. I couldn't say what I wanted to and it took all my concentration not to cry a little haha.
So beautiful we play this my band in our wind ensemble and it sent me into tears! The best chills I've ever gotten and made me perform this piece on a whole other level and really made me open my heart it's just amazing 😍 I love it!!!
the hecks are: Leonard Bernstein, composer conductor, June Anderson soprano - Cunegunde, the late Jerry Hadley tenor - Candide, Adolph Green - Pangloss, at London's Barbican Centre with the London Symphony Orchestra
First, I worship Lennie and I adore this song, and have watched many, many different renditions of it, and I am loving this one with him conducting!! I am also impressed with June Anderson singing lead Soprano, what a pleasure to watch her perform so young. I am so glad this video exists in the historical record.
I like that Bernstein slowed down the tempo at the end so you coukd really hear the different choruses that are happening... okasawa conducted the ending as fast as other folx often do and you can't hear all the voicing as plainly and it sounds muddled ...here the vocingss are clear because of the slowed down tempo after 3:35....
School (high school) performed this tonight with the Chamber Sinfonia (highest orchestra class in the school) and some Winds/Brass from Wind Ensemble (highest band class at school) and it was absolutely amazing, nothing like this though!
Any singer worth his/her weight in gold is able to sing it at this tempo BLINDfolded ( as they say ) people said Jessye Norman's Four last songs was ridiculously slow.....but then again it's always those that aren't really able to sing it like that themselves. The rendition is legendary. Make our garden grow ( as with almost ANY piece of storytelling through music....) Quadrupled the emotional effect when slowed down to a majestic tempo.....which Folks who struggle with proper support and line.....almost always complain about. This recording is a masterpiece.
Candide is one of my favorites, but this finale is one of the best things Lenny ever wrote.

@Ishaan Beckham Definitely, have been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself =)
Correction: It’s one of the best things anyone ever wrote.
when they choir hits that last high note before the orchestra comes back in - my God, goosebumps.
It's Bernstein's swelling, passionate understory that sweeps me away.

Can't hear this without crying my eyes out.

Same…
So beautiful!! R.I.P. Lenny. R.I.P. Jerry Hadley.

The real, true anthem of the US.

Beautiful!!!!! Thanks Lenny for all you gave us.
Hadley was so wonderful. Sad that he is not with us.
RIP Jerry and Lenny.

I love Bernstein's "Firebird" influence on this one. I hope Stravinsky liked it too.
The third that just soars above the very last chord is just 😫😫🤯🤯😭😭😤😤😤
Gorgeous. Splendid. Bountiful. Majestic!
It's TOO good
Anderson had a terrible flu and had missed all the rehearsals. She was hand-picked by Bernstein, so she must have been worth something.
Thank you again for doing this one as well!
Beautiful.
Jerry Hadley was an American version of Fritz Wunderlich. May he rest in peace.
yoooo, after reading this i went to search about fritz wunderlich, and wow in one of the pics he looks a lot like Seth MacFarlane
I miss Jerry too.. such a loss

Absolutely spot on observation! I really appreciated seeing Bernstein take command of that ship and steer it through the polyphony
the gates of heaven have opened up
RIP Jerry and Lenny
Always go back to this one for a pick me up
Jerry was such a nice guy..loved his work with Sir Paul McCartney
😢😢😢😢😢
4:23 eargasm
Did I forget that Adolph Green was in this (as Dr Pangloss) ? At the end, he asks "Any questions?"
Every time I see this I'm gutted.
This piece is really neat.
I wish we could hear the applause at the end...

you can tell he loved mahler
@rvsns Thank you. I do believe this is the LSO - I've been in this hall.
@135yearswaiting While I believe Bernstein was a great composer and conductor, how can you call 72 young?!?!
Seriously? You're kidding, right?
It’s sooooo slow, like much of Bernstein’s late conducting. Bravo to the singers for not pooping out.

What is the date of this performance?
I'm over the soprano soloist.
Non-memorized music, bad entrances at 4:04.
Such a beautiful piece!
@peacocktravels I didn't hear any terrible singing. I thought it was breathtaking.
June for sure , it was horrible
Luke & Leia.
Who the heck is performing this?! So annoying when people post, but fail to provide details!
To be honest, this is one of my least favorite performances of this masterpiece. The tempo just seems way too slow.
ugh - what a monstrous performance - I sang this once - as a bass - it sounded better -which isn't saying much
terrible singing....yikes
