The Dark Secret Building Germany's U-Boat

  • In the interwar period, the Germans endured the bitter consequences of the Treaty of Versailles imposed by the victors. But that didn’t mean they would willingly comply.
In truth, the German military kept looking for loopholes and tricks to rebuild its glorious power as the years passed. And one foolproof way to continue with its U-boat engineering legacy was to create a secret corporation.
Based in the Netherlands, NV Ingenieurskantoor Voor Scheepsbouw was a dummy company that, as early as the 1920s, researched and developed the submarines that would roam the Atlantic 20 years later.
Despite the limits that bound them, nothing would stop the Germans from bulking up their fleet well before World War 2 broke out…

Albert Speer told Hitler many times the war armaments program will not be ready till 1943, Hitler did not listen and started the war not fully equipped and so it was really the beginning of the end for Germany

The thing that really disgusts me is that the dutch helped Germany build submarines. Then when invaded they cry "HELP". The countries that all needed help dutchland, belgium, france, luxemberg, etc, should have been forced to pay UK, USA and Canada reparations for 100 years!

It WAS a humiliation and only the French wanted it and they pushed and bullied the other powers into it! Sure the US and British could have refused, but they didn't and thus Germany was reduced to not even a regional power, but a nothing! The Reichswehr was worse armed than many modern police departments (at least when it comes to handheld weapons! No SMGs alowed, harsh limits on light and heavy machine guns etc.!) after WW1 :(

If that was even possible, a more foresighted Hitler would clearly see that his warships would not be a match for Britain's. He could have accelerated U-Boat construction earlier, much earlier. With a more extensive fleet of U-Boats, he might have won the Atlantic battle and the war. Stopping war supplies from reaching Britain might have forced Britain to sue for peace. Failure to stop his war with Russia only added to his problems. I can only imagine how many U-Boats might have been constructed for the time, effort, and cost of building one battleship.

You forgot to mention France also declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland. U-Boat crews suffered the highest fatalities of all services at 75%

Marshal Foch’s oft-cited quote about the treaty being only “a 20 year armistice” is flagrantly misleading when presented out of context, as it often is. Foch was not criticizing the treaty as being too hard on Germany but was actually making the opposite point - that it was not punitive enough. He was lamenting that the treaty did not ensure that Germany’s armed forces and strategic position were permanently weakened, principally through perpetual French occupation of the Rhineland. There is no arguing with victory, but the record needs closer scrutiny. Of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, he said, “This is not peace. It is an armistice for 20 years,” and advocated harsher treatment of Germany. Foch considered the Treaty of Versailles to be "a capitulation, a treason" because he believed that only permanent occupation of the Rhineland would grant France sufficient security against a revival of German aggression. As the treaty was being signed Foch said: "This is not peace. It is an armistice for 20 years".

Give them credit, they outsmarted Chamberlain & Stalin. Is distressing to hear the Dutch allowed them to do so.

Good thing Hitler wasn't a strategist. Could have beat Britten and Russia with little effort if he had built subs instead of battle ships.

The Type I U boat was a fine bit of engineering, but the two completed vessels suffered from stability issues. Their floatation tanks were adequate for diving but the vessels rolled in heavy seas. Corrections were quickly made in subsequent design revisions, resulting in the Type VII.

Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbow den Haag also built a submarine prototype for the class II-submarines, it was tested in Finland by the Germans and then bought by the Finnish Navy. It was called Vesikko and was one of five submarines in the Finnish Navy, it still exists as a museum in Helsinki.

One part of WWII that is never talked about is the Russian Navy and Submarines. Would love to hear more about those.

I’m really pleased you made this as the next generation behind me have no idea of the horrors of war so these very educational videos are great to teach them 😮

The Atlantic eventually became a great resource for the allies, with much of British pilot training and plane manufacturing taking place in Canada.

As a Dutchman, I'm not suprised the Dutch somehow profitted from the situation. In WW1 the Dutch suplied a cocaine based medicine for both sides. In the golden age for the dutch, the sailed first to China to pick up papaver for herione and set sail to the Dutch Indie and bought alot of spices with that. The Dutch don't ask many moral questions in this kind of cases.
