Therapy in an Age of Digital Attachment
    Presented by Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee
    Description:
Research tells us that Americans spend, on average, 12 hours and 28 minutes each day “engaging” with screens. This time comes at the expense of family talk time, social practice, sleep and physical activity. As these experiences diminish and interaction with technology increases in private, educational, and professional settings, impacts are being made neurologically, relationally, and intra-personally. While some positive effects are present, many negative effects are also experienced, and they are revealed in the literature (e.g., agitation, boredom intolerance, self-centricity, and more).
Dr. Dodgen-Magee (doreendm.com/) will discuss the effects of texting, social networking, video game play, pornography, and over-reliance upon technology, as well as outlining the trends and movements of technology in learning and professional settings across the lifespan. Exposure to up-to-the-day pop culture references and trends will give the participant an ability to discuss the contexts within which their clients and their clients’ communities are residing.
Attendees will be exposed to tools regarding the assessment of a client’s engagement with technology and media. In addition, Dr. Dodgen-Magee will provide an overview of multiple intelligences theory as a resource for helping people find meaningful ways of re-engaging their embodied lives as opposed to their digital ones.
Far from being a fear-driven or anti-technology message, this lecture emphasizes the exploration of techniques for using the art of face-to-face, embodied psychotherapy to create healthy technology-use norms, and breaking destructive habits that clients have developed.
    Learning Objectives:
Those who attend this lecture will be able to:
    - Understand and assess the digital pools in which their clients are immersed.
    - Identify the benefits and costs of a client’s technology use, and employ strategies for setting healthy technology-use norms.
    - Use the practical tips and tools provided to include a realistic coverage of the client’s digital-life and embodied-life communication skills within the therapeutic setting.
