I have just started playing pickleball a lot recently and your videos have been helping out a lot, and I was wondering if you have any portable nets that you would recommend?
Can you explain why the continental grip is superior? I have a western grip from tennis and I'm having a lot of trouble changing it. I would use continental for my serves and switch for volleys once I was up in tennis, but I feel like I have so much less time to change it in pickleball during a point. Some mental model of why it will help my shots might give me the motivation I need.
Fellow tennis to pickleball transplant here! I’ve found that holding a semi-western or flat grip is generally more comfortable for me on forehands and drives. I’ve always used continental for volleys simply because you don’t have to turn the wrist as much when you’re starting with the hands up. Continental is convenient for volleys because of how versatile it is when having to make quick adjustments for a volley. Where as with ground strokes, you have more time to make the switch.
It is really hard to get folks to drill with you. You need partners about at your level who can challenge each other with both tactical shots and with pace.
@@davegenet To get any better and learn new skills, drilling is essential. Games are fun, but drilling is where you work on technical skills. Repetition
@@ralphparker Absolutely. Most people do not want to drill and would rather just "play". Drilling gives you repetition of technical skills. It's essential if you want to learn and master new skills.
The "issue #1" of the wrong grip for volley is interesting. I watched a video and the guy recommended that grip for what he called a scorpion volley and he says some pro use it! I chuckled at that. Also that grip is used by a few players I watched on videos up to the 3.5 level but after that I don't see any high level player using it. I guess what I'm trying to say is when I watch these, I want to figure out how to exploit that weakness. Do I want to hit the ball low to the backhand volley since it is hard for them to open the face of the paddle with that grip. Do I drive hard to the backhand volley because the same, they tend to hit the ball back low into the net? Even attackable ball is hard since they can't roll the backhand volley
I use that windshield wiper shot a lot but it only works on some balls. Grip your paddle with continental grip, then turn your paddle 90 degree giving you the western grip. In this grip, the windshield wiper turns into the scorpion as well as the tomahawk shot that Zane Navratil also uses. The trick is to be able to quickly change grips between continental and western and to identify the right ball to switch grip on (slightly high and slow). I think more and more people will start using that grip because it gives you backhand smashes that are as strong as forehand smashes because of the better wrist snap you can produce when using a western grip.
Point #2: I can usually tell whether a new player has any potential just by the way they stand. If their "ready" position looks like they're waiting for a bus, probably not. If they look like they're about to pounce- you got something to work with. Point 5 (?) about fixing your problems. I have told so many newbies to work on their drop shots, even though it's probably going to cost us this game. I know players that have played _years_ and still cannot do a 3rd shot drop. I even know of a couple that got it down, and then, for some reason, went back to lobbing everything. I'm self taught, other than watching a _lot_ instructional videos and matches on UA-cam and I may not be a great player, but I don't make these mistakes.
Simple for professional tennis players. Cover the line more at net. Cover cross court more at the base line. But also be balanced once you get into position. The reasoning is obvious if you understand angles.
Professional tennis players, hockey players and players from all over are starting to join in on the sport. If it's so easy, tag me again when you win your first 5.0 tourney, then maybe you can walk and talk.
@@garrett5532 Save it jackass. The entire sport of pickle ball amounts to nothing more than a little dink warm up drill that most tennis players do before beginning to hit. No joke, it's identical. You stand at the net literally dinking the ball back-and-forth before actually, you know, getting on to something that requires a little bit more, shall we say, skill, effort, ability, athleticism and challenge. Go by any pickle ball area. The average person is 90, bad knees, 100 pounds overweight and it's so fucking uncoordinated they need help starting their car. There's a reason for thay.......it requires absolutely no skill ability athleticism or effort. No strategy, no stroke variety, nothing..... Face it dude, this is a sport designed for people who have no athletic ability whatsoever.. It's kind of like putt putt for golf. Croquet for hockey players. The only difference is, those people don't pretend like they're actual athletes playing a sport. Since you brought up pro tennis players, let's talk about that. Being the pickle ball aficionado you clearly are 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm sure you've heard about the recent match with the tennis players. I love the commentary. Roddick says there's absolutely no learning curve....AS IN *NONE*. Ouch!!! McEnroe said if he hears another person talk about pickle ball.....hes gonna throw up. He absolutely hates the sport. You know why, because they both think it's a fucking joke.

Fantastic video! I benefited extremely much from it. Keep it up!

It's extremely important to drill. You should be drilling twice as much as you play. Yes, it's fun to play games, but hard to work on skills.
It really depends on what you’re trying to get from the game.
Not many people want to practice PB drills... *sigh*

How do you handle the players that aim for the face or upper body when I'm close up to the net?
Thanks for all your great videos!
Dodge and let it go out.
Defense or Dodge
Very helpful. Thank you for your time. I’m a new player in St. Louis Missouri. Hello from the Midwest
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely fabulous!

Great tip on “deep” Shading

I especially like the last comments about momemtum! EXACTLY what i do!!!! FOOT ON GAS!!😂
Great instruction videos! May consider: “mental focus” during the game! 👍🏻👍🏻
In your option 1 of move like an athlete, you must of had a couple too many beers.
😂
It is so funny how bad the 4 people in the background are at the six minute mark are.
option 1 looks like he's drunk haha
😂
commas, bruh
Great points! Thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
OMG....
...finally a sport for those who were always selected last in PE.
