I would clarify that "breaking the bank" often means not just spending a lot of money, but perhaps spending more money than you can spare, or spending enough money that you are worried about it. For instance, my boyfriend bought me a television. I was worried that the gift was too expensive, but he said that it was well within his budget and would not break the bank. He could definitely afford it. In this case, it is still spending what I consider to be a lot of money, but it does not break the bank.
