Many years back I worked at a company that had booths at various Home Shows. Often the companies that had landscaping displays had yards and yards of wood chips to gather up and deal with. If you had somewhere relatively close to the venue, they were more than willing to drop off dump truck loads for free, as it was faster and cheaper for them to do that versus taking back to their yard or dispose of them.

Yup. They have to pay by weight to dispose of them so they are very happy to deliver to someone for free.

Used it past year and we got a full load dropped. It took quite a while to get it spread out. But ABSOLUTELY will use it again.

It's okay, what I'm gonna tell you. You will probably call me a liar and I don't know what i'm talking about. But does wood chips you get for free or paper or chip and trees from power lines? So far so long are not treated. If you want to get wood chips, You need to go somewhere were they treat the woodchips. The wood chips you get from lowe's and home depot and any other garden center are treated wood chips to prevent you from having all types of bacteria , bugs and termites. The wood chips these people deliver are not treated and I wouldn't use them especially close to your home or any other structure. Or any other living tree. But Hey, beams, I don't know what I'm talking about. You go ahead and do what you want. You can't tell stupid people anything anyway. So yeah , I'll go ahead and do what you want.

Your thoughts are correct in some ways. It all depends on what you want to do with your garden. I try to be organic as much as possible. Wood chips are when tree cutting companies chop down a tree and chip it into smaller pieces. 99.9% of trees are not sprayed with chemicals. So the wood chips are chemical free and is pure wood and leaf matter. I don't like the mulch at stores because they have lots of chemicals and dyes added to them. As far as pests and termites, there is chance of this happening but responsible wood arborist companies wont dump that at your house. My husband used to work in pest control so he has checked every delivery I have received and said it is fine. Termites like moist environments not just wood chips for being wood. People use mulch all over their properties and near their houses. Doesn't mean you will get termites. If the area is water logged and then you add layers and layers of mulch or wood chips, then that has potential to attract termites. I'm not concerned about bacteria from trees. There have been some people that have had bad experiences with a bad delivery of wood chips which is a very tough situation because you have to figure out how to get rid of it. I have been doing it for years and personally have not had a bad delivery. I actually and editing a wood chip garden guide video right now that will go live on my channel in a few weeks where I discuss the pros and cons. But if you were to ask me my final thoughts on using wood chips after many years, I would say it has been the #1 game changer in my garden. Second being installing drip irrigation.
