I think all combat aircraft will eventually be remotely operated. Keeping highly trained and skilled pilots alive makes far more sense both in cost and logistics. Given the current state of technology where even hobbyists can fly RC planes and aircraft with VR headsets giving them an FPV view, there's no reason for any combat aircraft to be manned.

I think the biggest hurdle to clear for a remote operated fighter jet is the uplink speed between the controls and the airframe, with loitering drones launching guided munitions a little delay is acceptable, but in a dogfight you would want the control input to be acted on nearly instantly.

All coordinated with spy and communication satellite constellations in LOE which will essentially eliminate the fog of war and offer a real time picture of entire battlefields. Then of course with the new feasibility of reusable rocket boosters, orbital resupply to hot spots is possible within a matter of hours or even minutes instead of days. There are two NGAD programs. One for USAF and another for the Navy.
Description of the first one is a bit lackluster since the program is meant to be way more than a manned aircraft.
And if it's about the future air force, way more programs would deserve a mention: CCA, Golden Horde, Skyborg, Gremlin, Longshot, FARA, and many more

    • @anydaynow01

So true, this new drone swam tech that's coming out will put most manned air assets except the B-21 out of work, even those will have to come up with a visual and IR masking technology to avoid being tracked from LEO. Golden Horde systems integration is especially impressive when considering advanced personnel carried drones that only weigh around 1kg like Teal 2 are just in their infancy!

I honestly thought with the disaster of the V22 Osprey the US would be incredibly shy of anything further tiltrotor related. I may be exaggerating the Osprey's lethality to its occupants, but I don't feel like I am by much, I seem to remember it killing lots of people, especially during its testing phases.

I firmly believe the higher-ups in the Pentagon NEED TO BE REPLACED. Their overspending and lack if insight is costing the taxpayers far too much. I also believe that the B-1B Lancer is the most cost-effective platform for the money, regardless of maintenance costs. It can carry an enormous payload, fly under the radar, and fly at supersonic speeds, which could potentially scare off the enemy without the use of weapons.

I think there will be, just with a lot less meatsacks in fighters and attack aircraft, and stealth bombers and drone "motherships" will probably involve some kind of system to confuse optic based AI.

Problem worth the v280 replacing the black hawk is that while the black hawk isn’t the stealthiest it is smaller and harder to spot and probably quieter, which is what makes it popular, the V280 seems to be a lot bigger and double engines means found sound unless they find a very quiet engine
