- Is FFXI Still fun? Or is it dead?With the wide array of changes that have occurred in the past 3-4 years, figuring out how to get back into Final Fantasy XI can be a challenge in itself. This list is the top 5 changes that totally altered how I approach FFXI (omg thank you no more abyssea parties). Is it worth coming back to?

I just came back to this game after 11 years and some change. At first, I started out with the goal of becoming a Dark Knight and that's it. I never reached that goal because of the immense amount of time needed to group and grind out levels, do important quests like the Support Job quest, and pursue faction missions for that seemingly powerful level 10 and 20 gear. I made it to level 24 or 25 before I had to throw in the towel and just give up; picked up WoW three months later and was way happier.
Now I'm a level 37 Dark Knight quickly leveling up thanks to the Records of Eminence and getting to do all of the content that was so gated before. #LoveThemTrusts #HavingSoMuchMoreFunInFFXI
Haha ya, it used to be pretty ridiculous. Dark Knight was definitely one of the toughest to level early on too, my buddy complains about it all the time. WoW in general was far more approachable in general, which I'm sure is only one of the reasons it was so successful. Glad you came back though! There's a ton of amazing stuff to get out of FFXI, some incredible stories and beautifully designed areas.
Good stuff. I came back to this game finally after 6 years because of the May "Return to Vana'diel" campaign. It's been pretty god so far.

Keep it up man, I have been off and on for years in FFXI. At the moment I've been back for a few months and this game will always be the best MMO I've ever played. The new features may seem a little late but still very much enjoying them even if all my friends are long gone. This was my first MMO and I've played many since this came out, but I keep finding myself coming back.

It is very rare to see people talking about FFXI in this day and age. I have been playing off and on since 2009 but I was full time before then going all the way back to 2003. I love the game at this point. There is so much to do...so much to research...and so much to accomplish because I dual box (I find it adds another layer of gameplay).

I used to play FFXI on my laptop with a wired 360 controller, I can not for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong! I have searched google high and low to find out how to properly set it up but it still will not work. If you can make a video on how to properly get that to work or be able to send instructions on how to do that?

This was my first MMO. Played it on my PS2 with the Logitech controller that had a removable full size keyboard in the middle. Hands-down the most fun I've ever had in an MMO. You really felt like you accomplished something when you were successful. The subjob quest, the airship, and camping that stupid beetle for the warrior axe (was it called Neckchopper?). Wow... Great times.
OMG YES, my buddy framed one of those for me, the netplay or something. I have it hanging over my TV right now. We burned through so many of them playing FFXI, when i finally switched to PC from PS2 i had to get a usb adapter for the ps2 controller.

OMG I remember running to the boat to have the gates close on me at the last second and having to wait 10~15 minutes for the next ship to come and get to Jeuno to catch the next ship out to the exp party outside the entrance of that one island like heading to Norg ... Just to get there and the party is full now!!! Lmao!!! I miss those days (but my wife don't). Or countless hours and hours camping HNM to lose it to another guild pulling hate from you by over curing the tank!!! Hahahahaha! Memories and our server was the second to kill Vrtra (I think that's how you spell the name). Great video though took me WAY back!!!
hahha yeah everyone's stories are like "this was so miserable, I loved it!". And man, if you haven't missed a boat or an airship by just a few seconds you don't know true frustration...

just started up this game again with 2 friends, and I swear hours fly by without realising it. Did not think I would enjoy it as much as I have

I did a stupid and got roped in by buddie for the Return campaign.. used to only play on 360 5+ yrs ago. On PC (w help) this is amazing. A whole different game now.

I just can't get this game out of my mind, I was linking some old pics to my FFXIV friends last night. Sure it looks like hell compared to more recent games, but you just couldn't put a price on the people you met in FFXI. I mean, you had a reputation on your server and the baddies just never made it to end game content.
100%, everything taking so long left so much room for socializing. It felt like its own world
daft vagrant it had a pretty decent self sustained economy with it's market as well. I remember my dad supplying Vanadiel (butchered) with all sorts of loot. Yep. The game is so vital that a guy's kid inherited the same fascination as he did: we both ran together at one time. We still talk about how we'll get back into it.
I 100% agree, I miss the world. How everyone knew each other, people talked, communicated with one another. Baddies never made it far, it was amazing. You just don't get that in any other game anymore, anywhere, ever...

yeah you're definitely right! I've been bummed about it, but a lot of my footage lately got corrupted because I screwed up some settings in the recording software. Hope to get back to having some appropriate footage for what I'm talking about soon! Thanks for the comment!

This is always the first thing my friends and I say when starting a new MMO, travel has gotten so easy :(. I get it, because today's gaming market is all about getting to the action right away (for better or worse) but it definitely makes the world feel smaller, and less dangerous. FFXI these days it doesn't bother me as much, because of the countless years of it taking so long to get "anywhere", now when i warp around it really feels like this incredible gift haha
This comment is prob better for one of your NM videos, but because you mentioned the leaping lizzy christmas eve thing here again I'll mention what I did one time.
I had just hit 60(somewhere between 60-63 DRK) which was my first job to 75 back in 2004. It took me over a year on dialup intternet, limited play time cause of parents, during high school, to get this far. At 60 I felt gimp and knew I needed a Haubergeon if I wanted to keep leveling to 75. It sucked seeing other Lvl 60 DRK with better gear than me and Christmas break just started so I got to farming. I put on my only 2 music CD's Linkin Park Reanimation and Linkin Park Hybrid Theory into my walkman, and I went DRK/THF at Lvl 60 from Jeuno, to Qufim, to Delkfutts Tower, and I would run from the bottom floor to the top floor, back to the bottom, and run back to Jeuno. This was before I had CP to expend on warp scrolls. I did this run 10 hours a day for 10 days. I killed everything. The magic pots/jugs. The dolls. Every Goblin and Gigas for the money. Every single Elemental (usually lightning, sometimes Light if I was lucky). I sold everything on the AH except for pot shards. I made about 10k an hour on average. I'd make 100k a day on average. At the end of my 10 days of grinding I had 1mill. The most gil I've ever amassed. I couldn't believe it. The Haubergeon was 2 mill at the time. I told my parents all I wanted for XMAS was some FFXI gil. They went to IGE and actually bought me 1 million gil, it was over 200 dollars at the time. I remember getting a tell and the gil showed up in my mog house delivery box. I went and bought my Haubergeon. I was 14 yrs old at the time. I will never ever ever ever forget this. It was the last-best Christmas I ever had.
haha I'm just working on a video about dialup ffxi! so weird to think thats how old this game is. It's so funny you mention linkin park too, so many of their songs and certain others remind me of FFXI more than anything, because I just listened so much while playing lol.
That's a crazy story about the farming, my longest farm session was life belts from chests in fei yin, i just went ever day for like weeks and got a life belt every 30 min lol. That's so weird to think that your parents bought you gil haha

I came back after being on several "vacations" but my last serious period of playing was shortly after Abyssea started. I don't mind how things are, don't mind it at all. Bahamut is like a desert but that's fine.

I just got back in FFXI a bit. It's a lot of fun! I'm overwhelmed by how much has changed.. If you can get into the new endgame stuff, what kills me is how easy it is. Even endgame isn't hard anymore compared to the Kirin fights for example that needed a whole alliance of 18 for ONE fight, and people had like 6 pops.

Yeah the end game is definitely VERY different. There’s still incredibly hard difficulty at the last tier of post i119 content, but it’s mostly based around groups of 6 from what I’ve seen. For alliance content..maybe the escha bosses? Not sure how they work yet though. Yeah I remember falling asleep at the tail end of a Kirin one night, we were one of the crappier linkshells to attempt him, and it was just taking forever haha. But yeah used to be crazy
greatest MMO ive ever played, this latest free week has brought me back and i always say ill never come back but all this content that i havent done, WotG, Adoulin and so on has actually made me wanna play again and im thinking of actually resubbing, some old friends from back in the day are still playing which is nice, logged on for the 1st time and saw my play time was like 721 days >.>

I was 16 in 2002 When I created my Hume Bastok RDM lol, played till 2015. When SE did that live event where they said Seekers was the last expansion the LS threw a party in the Valkrum Dunes where all of us met to begin with in exp partys as a last hurrah. I personally quit slightly before the Rhapsody event.
ahhhh ya, I wish I'd still been active when Rhapsody's went live, its definitely a really cool send off, but the game has definitely changed over the years
Wow, just got my first urge to play FFXI since 2009! Are their some new ways to unlock jobs? I remember NIN being a pain.
+ABitchTookMyName Think all existing quests are essentially the same, sometimes "wait 24 hours before this" aspects have been removed, or level caps and such, but essentially unchanged otherwise. Most of them aren't too bad now, and with Trusts helping out it should be fairly doable!

i was planing on coming back but i play on 360 is there a way to play it in ps4?
not any way that I know of :\ I'm pretty sure at this point it's PC only, restrictions on servers for logging in made them shut down all console support
my last login was sometime in '14, but somehow that ffxi blood got back in me and started playing during this f2p period. it's been enjoyable surprisingly, and I will say that being able to use trusts has opened up a lot of interesting possibilities. I actually did my own experience party using only trusts in bibiki bay lol, and I even did it retro style with Trion as my pld tank, shantotto as my blm, apururu for whm, then Ayame for Sam, and myself as drg. the AI on the npc's is remarkably good, Ayame made an excellent skillchain partner and the blm was solid with the magic bursts. Trion votes and uses pld ja's and held hate well... it's was a cool throwback and brought back old school memories. I went from level 66-78, and the experience was great, though I'm sure there's probably better options. I was doing it as a throwback for fun. I also tried colibri in the old toau zones, and giant birds in lufaisse meadows.... but yeah the trusts are great for other higher end content as well.

for some reason this games like a Pandora's box you play It and It always draws you back with more content what a nostalgic game! if xiv will never match up

I wish I could go back to pre-WOTG FFXI. I loved campaign and all that but DNC was where the tonal change started to happen and the spirit of adventure and the old world started to die. The only "quality of life" improvement that I liked was level sync. That absolutely needed to happen. I'm sad that we will never see another MMO like FFXI.
I would even say Burn parties had already screwed up some things in ToAU haha, but yeah WOTG really changed everything. DNC introduced this "never stop fighting" mindset, and any job that couldn't keep up wasn't worth keeping around. Level Sync was amazing, but I was always a little annoyed that you couldn't use abilities from higher levels. I don't want to actulaly "be" 35 for a few hours, and UGH it ruined skillups.
Yeah I keep my eyes peeled for an FFXI replacement, but so far nothings shown up...hopefully some day!

How hard will it be to get 100 skill in all the crafting?
+Sorbik damn good question, I only ever got to about 52 clothcraft way back when, and it doesn't even get super tough til 60+ i've heard. Skill ups for everything else have gotten a lot easier than they used to, but honestly i'm not sure if that translates over to crafting or not? I'd imagine they must have made it a little more approachable, but I know crafting as a whole isn't quite as important as it once was with cruor vendor moogles and everything else
Wow, I remember losing my life in this game. getting a party together took like 1hr+ .... lol Is it still $13 a month for the 1 character slot?

Playing through from square one again, strictly one expansion at a time. Shadowlord was rough. I only had a group of four, because unlocking that 4th trust required visiting Norg which I'm not allowed to do yet cause it's Rise of the Zilart!
I managed it though....level 60...party of 4. Just me and Zeid....18HP left...last AE gonna kills us....KAPOW!

i have had alot of fun on this game.. as a red mage, and as a white mage. just rejoined too, so i kinda know what i am getting myself into gameplay wise. (since i played ffxi for 7 years, lol)
nice! haha ya I feel like RDM / WHM players have a really good understanding of the game because you get to hit all aspects of the combat at some point or another
the way i saw it when i was playing " i might as well get all my skills up to par", yeah it took a while, but i was in no rush. now, i can't even get 400 exp without leveling in that game now, (i'm on the phoenix server, it's pretty quiet, but i got this feeling that ffxi is gonna do a phoenix it'self, flair back to popularity.. call it a gamer hypothesis.)

this game still b fun, but you did forget to mention that there still is pretty hard/fulfilling content ^^ (like all the avatars lvl 119 version ) and they might do some new story content that they discussed at AMA
totally! the longer I play the more stuff I realize has been added / tweaked. the 119 avatar battles are fricken tough haha, and they're not even the hardest content out there right now by far
hehe ya, I'm excited I kinda am returning but with a brand new to game friend from ffxiv and well I can't wait to do the crazy fights with like the ultimate shadowlord... looks fun >.>
I can't say I've played a better game than FFXI, I was about 10/11 years old when I started playing, and was highly addicted to this game for like 6 years, took a break for 2 years, now thinking about getting back on it, and this video just solidified my opinion on this game. Only down side is that this game has become a lot easier than the level 75 cap and that bloody Matt fight at the end. But honestly if anyone is thinking about coming back to this game, then you won't be disappointed!
such a shame that games today and ff14 doesn't replicate this simplicity and magic this game has and games these days overdo it.

+Aaron Sedgwick yeah I agree. I was just thinking the other day that it's sad FFXIV didn't really capure that sense of exploration and wide open adventure that FFXI did so well. And it just had really memorable spells, abilities and content, that you just came back to over and over again
Huntin 4 Games I can't explain how but I sound like a girl if I explain ffxi how perfect it is that other games need to be but it's the sense of mystery, adventure and romantism in the music and atmosphere and everything that every game needs. Ffxi had it that needs to be updated to today's graphics or FFXVI needs to have.
+Aaron Sedgwick nah man totally, it just nailed the experience and the atmosphere. Games need to put a better emphasis on the world building, and making players feel important in that world. FFXI just did it right
I just started playing recently and loving all the changes. It's like a whole new game, but with the same familiarity I could only find in FFXI. Being able to consistently go through the game's story in one session actually makes it feel like a game instead of the grind fest it used to be. You still have to plan out what you're going to do and still work for your rewards. But trusts make it accessible.
Speaking of trusts, these guys are no joke. They can main heal, main tank, buff/debuf, even manaburst. Some of them are kind of OP, like being able to use Hexastrike and Savage Blade in the teen levels, but having up to 5 competent AI party members completely makes everything possible. I think my only complaint is you can't program certain AI tendencies or give them direct orders like the Pawns in Dragon's Dogma.
The overall pacing is excellent since I sadly had to start a fresh character. But it gives me a chance to start from square one and get back into the story since it's been almost 10 years since I last played.
yeah it seems like the trust balance across the level ranges was only sorta half assed haha. I agree 100% that I wish I could make them do certain things a little more specifically, but it's a really cool system.
I have to say, while I miss the old format, it is nice being able to go through the game at your own pace for sure.
I'm pretty sure they're all balanced by level range. I notice they get significantly more powerful every 15-20 levels. At least now I know which ones I like using when leveling and which to use for missions.
Ultimately, everyone is going to miss the original format. There was nothing like FFXI and there's never going to be anything like it ever again. But the way I'm experiencing it now makes it feel more like a Final Fantasy game than ever before.
How do I adjust FPS to 60?
I've heard there are applications that can force it, but I don't know of a way to do it in game unfortunately :\ Think it's locked at 30

sorry for getting back to you so late, but for better or worse dynamis is totally soloable now! the hourglass is super cheap, and you just run through as a 99 getting whatever you need. I have tons of relic for jobs I don't even play at this point lol

I try to run dynamis 2 times a day, the mobs check incred easy prey, you can handle alot solo, go get your glass for 50k it says 500 still but just trade him 50k to get perm. key item then farm til your hearts content, may i suggest learning the new proc system you will get roughly 4-500 currency a run.
Another big tip, if you ever subbed before you can return for free until the 21st(?) of December this year at the moment :D

I love FFXI. I actually just resubbed today because I have some extra money to throw at it, despite the free campaign coming up in 2 days -.- lol! But I loved FFXI, I still love FFXI, it's a great game with an absolutely enthralling story. And back in the day, when MMOs -were- harder and tedious, and took time, it was still one of the best MMO experiences I have ever had. Viva la FFXI

ffxi is like an old friend. it's painful to watch it roll over and die. but the Trust npcs are great! i was able to take down the Shadow Dragon boss from mission 2-3 like it was nothing! with only a party of 4

Huntin 4 Games it's especially great when you use fighters that have a healer as a subjob. like Excenmille or Curilla. Then your whole party can heal.

Aww you had to poke at drg lol I main it but yeah it's kinda meh...depends on what you're doing it's good at least for call sets. Sad the reforges are a bit mixed on use like rdm af body, you can just do af3 body and get that and then some. Still playing myself. Good tips you should've brought up Unity's since that has good stuff like new Leaping Lizzie boots. ;P

EXTREMELY. I remember setting my alarm to wake up at 4.30 am for an hour or two of ballista. I play ffxiv, and the pvp isn't really that interesting. My sister played up to about a year ago, so I saw the trust system.
Party of 6 for Capacity Points, is still a thing. Problem is it's mostly just BLM magic bursts vs apex crabs. No real variety and with out double cp campaign no one bothers.

+TheHomicidalTendency yesterday i had an amazing apex party pretty much composed of melee jobs (setup was geo doing indi haste and topor , aeonic brd ,cor, run tank, aeonic drg and i was a lone blm with only 20 job points so i was not doing much). the cor + the aeonic drg was uterly destroying the mobs before i even had the chance to nuke then, cor was often doing over 70k damage in darkness skill chains and drg was doing over 30k damage in umbras skill chains(neted me 150 jps in 40 minutes that party), people often dont know or understimate the power of multi step skill chains, however blms need much less gear in order to do apex mobs thats is true (as well for the fact that the apex mobs does give an pretty solid cp amout per mob), and reisenjima partys only goes fast if you are mass pulling and aoeing everything so it limits a bit the jobs who will be able to join, there is also the issue that alot of the jobs really starts to shine after the 100 jp mark so climbing there may be a pain specially solo/low man ( a comum misconception is that also apex are unsoloable/unreliable to solo but that is not actually the case depending on how well geared your job is)

Thats nuts though, and yeah I'm really glad skillchains are a thing again, we always used to say that Skillchains were one of the coolest aspects of the game, and it was too bad they sort of made them less useful when burn parties became a thing.
I gotta get that gear up, i think my highest so far is BLU at like 116/ 117, so not too far yet
yeah cor mythic weapon skill leaden salute is an magic damage ws that equiped right can get insane damage(pixie haripin +1 is responsible for an huge buff in this ws damage).His leaden salute was dealing around 30k damage usually that alone can close 30k damage darkness as well , but when you add the damage bonus from multi step skill chains it can raise the damage by an huge amount, i saw once an jp blu soloing arch dynamis lord like that and since then i did my research on the metter (he went in the fight with 3000 tp then 2 houred and did the following disserverment>goblin rush>amorphic strike>sweeping gauge>quadratic quantinum>chain afinity>enflux >sinker drill, that last sinker drill did around 13k damage to the arch dynamis lord but closed an 60k darkness that pretty much one shoted it(yeah the bonus on the skill chain damage can get that high even the ws not dealing that much to begin with). there is also an aeonic blu video on youtube dealing an 60k radiance soloing an Immanibugard (unity notorious monster 119) in pretty much an single multi step skill chain wich you can check the skill chain damage going up pretty easily.So yeah for the most part i belive that the lack of information is what blocks most groups from doing apex pts but i personally belive that with an alluvion yorcia armor with the right aguments (double / triple attack + acc) an oboro 119 jse weapon fully agumented (huge acc bonus to just let it pass) and haste suport (dont forget acc food) ,2 DDs can absolutely destroy apex mobs with little effort, or you could use more DDs if you manage to get then to work togheter instead of spam chant du cygne into chant du cygne for light.

This has always been my favorite mmo. I am currently working on my Relic gear. I like the changes they made,alot of the content can be soloed if you want.But some you may still need a party. Also I guess maybe because of RMT's some of the NM drops are different now. Like the Kraken club can only be obtained from a BCNM,it no longer drops from a timed/lotto NM. I don't think all of the NM's have this change made but most I believe have.It would be best to research the item/nm before you go camp it for days on end just to find it drops a different item now. Ahhh ya I remember when they made those changes. There were many that were so desirable, RMT essentially made it impossible to camp them legitimately.
I always just sort of treated them as the same items, even though it is weird with items like the Octave Club, only Kraken club sounds legit to me lol
I started playing FFXI about a month ago on a *cough cough* private server. Playing the game pre-abyssea brings back so many memories and with the level cap 75, I am grinding to get back into that awesome end game!

FFXI brought out the best and worst in me. I've been considering going back... but can't get access to my old account with Maat's Cap and Mandau, so can't imagine starting a new character. I think it's definitely for the best. I threw away many years I should have been spending with people who are no longer alive or no longer part of my life.
ooomph, ya I don't think I could ever make a new char with way less investment than a Maat's Cap or Mandau would require, but I hear ya. At some point you've just spent enough time in the game, and its not really worth it anymore

Not sure what the Shiva population is like, but it could likely still be around that depending on what time. There's definitely still a lot of activity on servers for end game, but its nothing like what it was during its prime.
It's too sad for me to go back to that game. I don't like the idea of playing by myself. I'll just stick with FFXIV. FFXI was so much fun and I loved that game back in the day, but I think I'll just be too sad if I replay it.

Huntin 4 Games honestly why I chose it, it was my second FF and I saw my dad and his brother play together all the time so I got into it and we ruled the server. I remember me and my dad would take turns waiting for fafnir to pop up all night and then still lose it to other Linkshells. but Cop and Sky were life
the main thing that got me to stop playing this game was drop rates. I can understand drop rates of some items but the drop rate of almost everything was bad. I played from 2005 - 2009 and briefly in 2014. Drop Rate was too bad for me in the old content.
it was definitely pretty love, weird to think that at the time I just thought it was normal that everything was impossible to get
Huntin 4 Games That was pretty much how it was and the story was close to impossible to beat unless you had those items which were "impossible to obtain." It gotten too much for me I don't know how it is now. hopefully better.

After watching this I decided to play again, I played from 2007 to 2011ish. It's not hardcore enough for me now though so I actually found a private server that only has content up to CoP, with over 1k players playing it. So much win.

It's crazy thinking back to when CoP came out, and everyone was struggling through the 25 cap promy missions to get to Lufaise Meadows and Tavnazia. You had to have a level 25 gearset around all the time haha

it's definitely more approachable now than it used to be. SE has claimed they won't shut it down while there's still solid support for it sub wise. I'm curious what those numbers are though...how low can it go before they cut it...
Considering this game is generating pretty much nothing but pure profit for SE, I would say pretty low; Look at how long it took them to drop PS2 (& 360) support.

its pretty decent. i like how you cant go afk during raids or dungeons. and no more camp and grind. can actually play like old school kill and move explore and kill lol. recently started ff15 too which to be honest the offlines are a lot easier even if foghts are harder cause ya know you didnt grab that 1 idiot that just cant figure the game out at lvl99 lol
haha, ya camp and grind was fun for the social aspect and getting that "perfect" spot. But roaming and exploring is just more flexible for sure.

Played 2005-2014.... had depressions due to ffxi because the addiction keeps you from living a normal life. Started a new character this past October (2016). Did ALL main missions in all expansions and also rank 6, 4 99's I leveled and some endgame gear pieces obtained.....in just two months!!!! It is super easy nowadays. 90% of the game is soloable. FFXI is FFXII but placed in Vana'diel instead. FFXI isn't nostalgic anymore. Bye, I quit the other day... for good!
yeah it can definitely have that effect, and I agree the game is pretty much entirely soloable nowadays (for better or worse). Lolol I remember when 12 came out I was shocked at how much it reminded me of XI in little ways. sounds like you pretty much got everything out of it you could though!
so basically they turned it into a single player game with optional co-op lol
pretty much, BST isn't the end all be all for soloing anymore lol. With the lower population I'm not sure how else they'd do it, but sad changes
i miss the old ff11 days. i was so lost when i logged in for the first time years ago and this one random taru taru helped me with almost everything. she even gave me 300k gil she spoiled me haha and we became very good friends for years to come after. then came the level cap raise and vanadeil fell apart D:
