  • While in the Jungles of Colombia, we had the wild idea of making bows. Lucky for us, our guides have been making them since they were toddlers and knew the ins and outs... so we found a tree, chopped it down, and got to bow making.

    It would be great if you have showed them how to make a bending jig then how to steam the limbs to make a powerful recurve bow , also how to thicken the riser with adding layers of wood by gluing them together for better grip !
    I loved this post; thank you for sharing

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  9 років тому +3

      If the environment would have allowed it, these people would have done it a long long time ago. The heat and humidity keeps you from gluing or steaming anything since fungus or moister will destroy all of your hard work. Keeping it simple in the Amazon is the way to go.

    Seeing as the wood is still green at the time of harvesting and not given a chance to dry (like it could in any reasonable amount of time there, haha), what is the expected service life of a bow like this? Do you have to take any precautions to prevent them from taking a set? What'd you fellas use for arrows? And what natural cordage would you use in the jungle to string it?
    Great video once again.

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  9 років тому +2

      ***** The wood is strange. Very different from trees in North America. The black part of the wood is rather dense and didn't seem to "dry out". All of the moister the plant uses is transferred from the white pithy center. It's essentially a flat bow, so it would only be strung before a hunt and taken down shortly after. Natives use nockless arrows and balance the arrow on the string that's made out of bark off a certain tree. Since stones are few and far between, arrowheads are made of bamboo. As cool as those are, I just have carbon arrows...kind of boring.

    • @knifeNguns
      @knifeNguns 9 років тому +1

      +InnerBark Outdoors
      Hmm, walking palms sound interesting. Would be fun to experiment with. Looks like some added material, some kind of backer, around the 'riser' area could of helped prevent the breakage by pushing the stress outwards to the limb, though I guess it'd defeat the purpose of a simple jungle bow.
      I got boring carbon arrows too... for now. I downed an ash over the summer, wanted to try and get a stave large enough for a self bow, but it didn't work out (got a nice slab that I'm planning on turning into a gunstock war club though). I'm still keeping an eye for a good piece of wood to get some bow staves out of. Might try locust, though it tends to be knotty.

    • @InnerBark
      @InnerBark 9 років тому +1

      ***** I'm going to be experimenting with some local woods here, but it's hard to find good hardwoods in an evergreen state.

    • @knifeNguns
      @knifeNguns 9 років тому

      ***** You could try a laminated backing to sure up whatever you get your hands on.
      At least that's what I've heard. No firsthand experience yet.
      I attempted a self bow a while back with black locust. Got many hours into working a stave down and it ended up twisting on me (guess I didn't let it dry enough), some guys in the know told me I could save it by shaving it down to true and then adding a laminate backing to add strength back in, but I'd already turned it into kindling out of frustration at that point...

    Pretty sure it broke because you tillered it improperly. Looks like you a narrowed the handle and had it bending there as well. Those two don't go well together unless you leave the handle slightly thicker or have the handle be the widest part of the bow and taper down to the tips. Too much stress at the handle= breakage. If you look at some of the pics of Amazonian tribesman using their bows, you'll find that many of them draw the bow very far back, to their ear even.
