    I was an automation engineer when it was in testing. Yes, it broke down a LOT. That is why it got slowed down a LOT! I rode and rode and rode that thing with a chart recorder by my side. I can't believe it was ever opened to the public. You wouldn't believe the failure rate during testing. All the vibration caused all the electronic components (that weren't designed for such an application) to fail...OFTEN!

      *****
      The track is fine for the ride. It was the electronics that constantly failed. And the problem with that is the length of the track. When one of the cars failed a half mile away, it was a lot of trouble to get it back to the repair station...and everyone on the ride behind the problem suffered. If they had better electronic components (that were actually made for that type of application) maybe their reliability would be good enough to keep the ride going.

      Hey rob H what would happen if disney tried to do it again today with new tech from say Tesla or something?

    • @BDNeon
      @BDNeon 6 років тому +22

      Electronics have advanced so much in the last 20 years. Solid State Drives, etc, stuff that can better handle shaking and vibration. I bet if the electronics were the only problem back in 1998 then it would work flawlessly with todays electronics.

      Electronics are so much better now-most big Diesel trucks have their electronic engine controls mounted directly on the engine-talk about vibration! And with the advances in electronics, Disney could easily bring back the Rods. Personally-I'd like to see the People Mover back.

    I got to ride this shortly after it opened and it was awesome. The People Mover was amazing and relaxing, like a Sunday stoner drive; but The Rocket Rods were a more exhilarating way to see Tomorrowland, like a sports car on back roads. Both have their place. It would be awesome if they brought both back with a dual track.

    This was my favorite ride! The openness gave you a whole different sensation and it was ahead of its time. Open car coasters are popular now but back then , this was the only ride that included speed when the rider wasn't tucked down inside a car.

    I don't get the criticism on the video... it doesn't look like a bad ride. Decent speed, long ride length, good views of other attractions. I'd take it over nothing, which is what we have now.

    • @A_A610
      @A_A610 10 років тому +35

      Low capacity led to long lines. On top of waits exceeding an hour on even the slowest of days, the ride was a maintenance nightmare, and it broke down several times a day, compounding the wait times even more.
      It was decently fun, yeah, but there were just SO many things it got wrong.

    • @hawaiidispenser
      @hawaiidispenser 10 років тому +14

      AdrenalineAddict610 Ok, long lines is definitely something that would turn me off. Cars in CA has ridiculous wait times... something wasnt planned right there. Anyway, the rocket rods should have all been double seaters, like the last row is. Would have doubled capacity right there.

      +Linescrew1 I do agree with you there. I remember being in line for at least 60 minutes before actually getting on the ride itself and i remember the ride being OK at best. You really did not miss a thing. I would give the ride a 56/100 on the 100-point scale. It was OK but not great. It would have been better if the ride itself had a higher speed. I think it topped out at 30 MPH, but, if it were to hit 45-50 MPH it would have been a lot better ride. It would have been at least an 87/100 if it had that higher top speed.

      The thing is that the cars would never be supported by that speed, they could of used some type of bank turn to make the ride go faster but they needed to keep it cheap, the reason the ride closed was because the speed of the cars was not being supported well for the structure and was falling apart.Well its not the past, hopefully they redo the track and add in the people mover again but that is kinda unlikely.

    • @rosesske2551
      @rosesske2551 6 років тому +4

      Theme Park Extremist From what I hear, it’s cheaper just to demolish the people mover track way system then to redo it.
      And that’s saying a lot since removing the track way system would already cost a fortune (even for Disney) since some of the track way system is built directly into tomorrow land and they would probably have to shutdown most if not all of tomorrow land for a while just to remove the track system from it.

    This was one of my favorite rides growing up. The idea of futuristic cars zooming above Tomorrowland was a great one, but you can tell this ride was built by the lowest bidder and its reliability and dispatch rates suffered because of it. If Paul Pressler and his no-frills ways didn't get in the way, Rocket Rods would've been the best ride in Disneyland.

      I watched the documentary around the imagineers on Disney+ and it really is sad that he decided to cut corners to try and save money. Unless times are absolutely desperate where they are on the verge of bankruptcy, that’s the last thing you could possibly do to help a business. I’ve seen this on Kitchen Nightmares. It’s the same case here because patrons really aren’t that stupid. They can just tell when something is tacky

  • @BloodredRose84
    @BloodredRose84 8 років тому +27

    I asked a friend of mine who is a castmember if Rocket rods would ever come back and he told me in order for that to happen they would have to take down and redo the whole track due to it being made for the people mover. The tires wearing out wasn't just the problem it was mainly the track itself since the rocket rods had to slow down when making a turn because the track wasn't made for that kind of ride. Because of this problem (if they redo the track) most of Tomarrowland would have to be close because the track went around the whole Tomorrowland park and inside two rides and right now they don't want to do that if at all so I don't think Rocket Rods will be returning sadly.

    • @Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil
      @Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil 8 років тому +5

      +BloodredRose84 It's too bad they didn't redo parts of the track where it curves, they could have banked those turns and then it could REALLY go fast. Then it would have been more popular and still be there today. :-)

    • @mikecarter8880
      @mikecarter8880 7 років тому +1

      I think making it handicapped accessible is 1 problem which wasn't an issue then since people are sue happy now. Also OSHA requirements are another problem, see what they did to Alice In Wonderland: dlreporter.com/2015/02/11/osha-and-disneyland-artistic-compromises-made-in-the-name-of-safety/ I think it just comes down to money to make it OSHA compliant and handicapped accessible.

    • @HistoryUnwound
      @HistoryUnwound 7 років тому +2

      Same problem. The structural support system weakened considerably due to Rocket Rods' improper use of the system, so even bringing back the PeopleMover would still require heavy maintenance on the track and support system, which would still require closing most of Tomorrowland. But when Star Wars Land opens and draws most of the guests' attention, they may be able to do it. I think they're planning on doing the same thing at Disney World, relying on Pandora to draw guests away from the rest of Animal Kingdom so that they can take apart Expedition Everest and fix the colossal Yeti Animatronic that's been broken for over a decade.

    • @BloodredRose84
      @BloodredRose84 7 років тому

      Mostly due to time and money.. They would have to rip up the whole track to remove the Rocket Rods track and replace it but also the foundation itself has to be fixed due to it cracking and being abounded for so long. They would also have to make a new entrance and exit and the PeopleMover itself would have to be rebuilt due to most of it being scraped sadly.. so with all that to do they dont have interest in it right now but who knows maybe one day they will get back to it.

      I love how Disneyland Paris executed the same idea with their Discoveryland. It's timeless and beautiful, and I would love to have their Discoveryland in Disneyland. The issue with 98 Tomorrowland was, instead of building from scratch a Jules Verne fantasy future, they just painted over an identity-less sort of futuristic land. It didn't look right because it was never meant to look like that in the first place.

      Does anyone remember the high speed train in Disneyland? I know some of the history and it caught fire several times including the day before it opened. It had many problems due to the fact that it was low budget but that’s what Disney does. They do with what they can to create something knew and when it works no one complains but if they have one thing that doesn’t work people loose there minds. Rocket rods was great I would be happy if they fixed the problems and braught it back.

      +Tony O Main reason that won't ever happen is because of safety regulations. Back then, ride restrictions weren't so strict and the park engineers didn't really think about plausible results of the guest's reckless actions. If you research you'll find out that Autopia was originally built without the guiderail in the center of the track. People could go off road and pass each other up if they wanted too. There had been numerous deaths on several rides including two on the PeopleMover. Nowadays, rides won't pass approval if they don't meet the strictest of safety features. But I agree for the yesteryear idea only if safety is highly valued.

      Mountain dog 20 if it was death related, then big thunder, the monorail and a few other attractions would be gone as well. No those rides were pulled to make way for a new generation. I would never ride mission to the moon while mission space is available. Same with mine train through nature’s wonderland while big thunder is standing. I would never go on a stage coach ride or ride an ass if something more thrilling is available. That’s why disney has been moving forward.

      To be honest you have been incorrect on the number of deaths for the people mover. There are a few more then get reported on the news. Each ride in the park has averaged 1 death. You just don’t hear about them. Especially because it’s the happiest place on earth.

    I didn't understand how Disney could spend money making a whole new land, and leave Todayland (what Tomorrowland has become) so ignored! But now it makes sense: They need to get all the crowds over at Star Wars Land, that way they can close Tomorrowland and hopefully have a FINAL redo. By "final", I know Disneyland is always going to change, but it'd be a huge relief if the next Tomorrowland could last at _least_ 40 years.

    • @whossoul
      @whossoul 7 років тому +20

      But it never could. Look at how fast technology changes. Stuff of the future one year is in peoples homes within a year or two. Trying to keep up with the future was impossible even in 1955, and has only gotten worse. Tomorrowland as a concept is not feasible, they would have to update every year, and the land would be constantly under construction, having to re-update as soon as construction on the last updates were finished. WDW and DLP both solved this issue by instead of trying to be a Tomorrowland, they portray a fantasy future that never was, with WDW being portrayed as a comic book, alien filled space port, and DLP having a steampunk Jules Verne aesthetic. They can't become outdated because it's deviated from the original idea for Tomorrowland, which is an unattainable goal.

    I was 8 when this ride came out and I really did love it. I think it's because it was my first "big ride". Watching it now it is a little pathetic, yes, but it's still so freakin nostalgic that I can't help but love it. Also everyone in the comments complains about massive wait times but I was one of the lucky few to have a disabled veteran dad who got us onto rides through the exits. Never waited over 15 minutes for this. Lucky me :) haha But really, I think disney needs to spend the extra cash (cuz we all know they have it) and rework this to be a Tron lightcycle themed ride. Because come on, how perfect would that be?? Pluuuuuss if you think about it, it'd be kind of a tribute to both Rocket Rods and People Mover. Just sayin.

    They really have a couple options here, both of which are good: 1. bring back the people mover. Disney really did underestimate the value of resting your feet on it, plus it relieves lines on other rides a bit. 2. Keep the ride on the slow side, but make the ride vehicles Star Wars landspeeders. Add some tunnels with some story and I think you have something. 3. My favorite-make it a group of 4 tron light cycles. move they through tunnels with screens that will make you feel like you are traveling fast across the grid. The mind is an easy thing to fool.

      Exactly! I can't believe they've let this sit empty and useless for 14 years! It's the 2010s, there should be no excuse to not have an upgraded version that won't break down and what not.

    I used to hate this ride. It sped up only to shortly to stop with a cast member saying "we are experiencing technical difficulties." There was one time I waited more than 3 hours just to get aboard this ride! Only one time I got to fully enjoy this ride without any stops or interruptions and it was fun.
