A huge metal ball will break my bones and make me bleed (realistic expectations) vs nothing hurts or makes me bleed (unrealistic expectation). It's up to the parents to educate the kids, censorship is not the answer. I agree with softening a bit some scenes and language for the kids but taking out all the blood, spikes, guns, etc, that's not softening that's censorship.

I think I remember reading something about all they were presented with was that it was a cartoon that was pulling great viewing numbers in Japan. So they got the rights, or the rights were part of a package deal. Eventually they would have had to cancel the show, as it simply gets "worse" as you go on.

Fun fact, as a kid I had zero idea what anime was, let alone anime censorship. So seeing One Piece was super confusing. I had zero idea why the suction darts were supposed to be just a big deal, like... Why'd they hurt him at all? He's rubber?
Very happy my first exposure to one piece is through the funimation dub which is actually one of the better dubs and to my knowledge keeps the violence the same as original, but if they are going to this much censorship for kids don’t even bother doing it because it ruins the whole show

I never understood the censorship when it comes to anime here in the states. I remember The Simpsons and watching Treehouse of Horrors on Halloween when I was growing up and they didn't shy away from blood. Same thing goes for other shows like Family Guy.
