First, beautiful work. Second, I appreciate the no non-sense no hype no music approach to your videos. Third, I rarely follow anyone but I followed your channel because of 1 & 2. Thanks.
Hi Keith, thanks so much for subscribing, I really appreciate it! It took me a while to figure out what kind of format I was going to use for my videos and had a little stretch where I used music, mostly so that I could listen to music in the shop while working and not get slapped with copyright infringement. However after doing a few voiceover videos you guys made it clear you liked that style so that’s how it’ll be. Thanks for the feedback 😊
@@LisaRamlow No problem on the feedback. I believe, like you, most of us out here have very full days. I get up at 5 A.M. most days and before my beautiful bride wakes up I have a couple cups of coffee and get a video or two in. Being a craftsman is in our blood so we try to balance our time the best we can to squeeze it all into our days. Keep up the great job Lisa and stay safe!
I love it. What a beautiful piece. Wow ! you never put yourself down this time. I did have a chuckle though, I've never seen a gator saw used to cut a piece off the blank. But hey the girl uses a big lathe, a gator saw is merely a toy.
@@LisaRamlow it is indeed reciprocating saw. I think the first ones here in the UK were called Alligator by Black and decker. I have a parkstone one. Much like all vacuum cleaners get called Hoover.
Hi Helen, thanks so much. I use this in my kitchen, though I added a goofy little finial after the fact that I don’t think looks particularly attractive, it it does make it more functional. I got an amazingly good fit on the lid - even though the walnut is kiln dried, there have been days this summer where I couldn’t get the lid off because the humidity made it swell *just*!enough 😂
very nice clean no frills just the natural beauty of wood . Someone will love it no matter who thinks what. it could be used for many other things jewelry coins keys paper clips some one will like it.
Funny thing about this piece - it’s in my kitchen and I use it every day. Except a handful of days in the summer where the wood swells and moves just enough that I can’t get the lid off! It was a super-precise fit, but being as this walnut was kiln dried probably 15 years ago I’m stunned that it moves at all!
This is the kind of piece I just want to hold in my own hands and fondle it. It looks as if it has a lovely, smooth texture and it's also beautiful to look at.
Hi Gail, I use it every day and it is indeed a lovely little box. I got such a great fit on the lid that there are days in the summer that I can’t get the lid off! 😂
A lovely, perfect fitting salt cellar Lisa. It was an absolute joy watching and listening to you. Lucky individual who ends up having it! Now to find another item within say, the last five months! I've yet to catch up with everyone but I'll get there! Thank you for showing this to us. All the best, Pam/uk
Haha, I’m the lucky individual! I use it every day. Except a few days in the summer when it’s so humid even walnut kiln dried 15+ years ago wants to move around and swell just enough that I can’t get the lid off 😂
Yes indeed! Haven’t seen any of that myself, but I do have a couple of pieces of walnut with some nice figure. Walnut burl would definitely be an amazing thing to get a hold of!
Thanks John! I use this every day 😊 I used OB’s Shine Juice as the finish. It’s a friction polish made from shellac, denatured alcohol and boiled linseed oil. Search YT for the recipe but I think it’s equal parts of each.
Hi Archie. These are older videos where I hadn’t switched to the new voiceover format yet. I am going to make another salt cellar soon so check out my newer projects 👍
Hi Scott! After the fact, I did actually add a finial so there was a handle. Not my best design, as I was going for something easy to grip - came out looking like a Santa hat sticking straight up 😂. But it holds my salt and I’ve stopped noticing it so much anymore. Thanks again for watching, and for leaving a comment. I love to hear from you guys!
I liked this, but, I think you could have made it better by giving a narrative of what you were doing, and why. You obviously know what you are doing. Me on the other hand have only just bought my first lathe, so am trying to learn everything I can. Please don't stop putting up more videos.
Hi there! It’s taken me a while to figure out the format I wanted for the videos, and also a bunch of you asking for the voice overs. So that’ll be how it goes forward, but I can’t really go back and add it to my older videos. But I’ll be making more lidded boxes, so stay tuned. Thanks for watching and for the feedback-much appreciated 😊
Thanks and yep. I’m aware of the safety implications and make sure whatever I’m wearing near the lathe is close-fitting. Safety is our own responsibility and I do not advocate anyone do the things I do. Thanks for watching and stay safe 😊
I don’t remember exactly but I use this in my kitchen and it’s small enough that I can lift the lid off with my left hand and get a pinch with my right, but it’s big enough that I can scoop out half a teaspoon or whatever and not have to refill it right away
I think that is a handsome box. The walnut has a beautiful finish; what product did you use for this? I've been turning bowls for the past year so I've decided to try a box for a little variety. Your video gives me a good insight in how I would do this. I have some cherry and walnut pieces too small for bowls so they will be good candidates for this project. Do you like your carbide tools?
Hi Paul! Thank you, I’m happy with how this turned out-I use it every day! I’m pretty sure I used OB Shine Juice on it, which is a friction polish made of BLO, DNA, and shellac. It’s holding up fine but I think for future utility pieces like this I’ll either use the Tried & True Original Wood Finish (I used this on the Cherry Burl Travel Mug) or Mahoney’s walnut oil and then use the Beall buffing system on top. Cherry or walnut will both make lovely little boxes. To be honest I’m not super happy with the carbides. I bought them initially because I think one of the things that stopped me from venturing into turning was that sharpening totally intimidated me. I still use them for certain things, and the negative rake carbide is a must (at least for me) for using with resin, but I prefer the traditional tools for most things.
Hi Leroy! Yes, this is an older video and before I discovered y'all want the voiceover 😃. I put a turning video out a couple of weeks ago and alas it doesn't have a voiceover since I was listening music in the shop and would get hit for copyright infringement. I'm having shoulder surgery on Monday and won't be able to turn for probably 6 weeks but I have a few projects recorded and will be editing and publishing them while I'm recuperating, so stay tuned!
@LisaRamlow Sorry to hear about your shoulder surgery.Hope everything goes well. Had mine done about 5 years ago, and it took me about 6 months to get back to full use. If you can get back to turning within six weeks, you'll be doing great. Good luck and hoping for the best for you.👍
Thanks! Had the surgery about a week and a half ago now and so far so good. Post op appointment is next week but there's little to no pain so that's a big relief!
@@LisaRamlow Wow, that's truly great news. You've truly got a lot to be thankful for over thanksgiving. Wish you and yours all the best. Have an enjoyable thanksgiving and a speedy recovery.
