Hey Scott just wanted to say these different types of videos where you aren't necessarily talking about technique are what inspired me into painting miniatures. I have a pretty bad spinal injury stemming from a bad weight lifting accident about 5 years ago. I haven't been painting for much longer than a few months but painting has become my main coping mechanism now in an especially dark time in my life. It's the first thing I've really felt completely motivated about doing since I hurt myself. Paint more minis!

I agree with you 100% about not selling or giving away too many old minis . I painted a 1000 pt imperial fist army many years ago when the Captain Lysander model came out . I for once got the yellow armor perfect . I sold the army a few years ago during a rough financial patch after keeping it for 10 years or so . I got a good price for it but not a day goes buy I look where it was in my display case and miss it ..and I’ve never been able to recreate that shade of yellow again no matter what ......

These are some of the most important videos I have seen on You Tube. Advanced painters showing where they came from helps those intimidated by your current level of skill understand that you have to start somewhere and skill comes from many years of practice. some succeed others fail but if you keep at it you will progress. Thank you for this.

I'm finishing my old miniatures off, 20 years down the line. It has been an awesome way to relax, get back into the hobby, and learn new skills. And it has practically cost me nothing (call it a 20-year investment); my Citadel paints are still fine after two decades and all the minis are still playable (mostly). I even started a regular blog to help others get through their mountain of plastic and metal, and that has largely been inspired by UA-camrs like Miniac, LukesAPS, and Tabletop Minions. The community here is awesome. I"m loving every minute of it!

Was honestly expecting about three to five times that number of minis. I think you are spot on about not selling your old figs. About five years ago I seriously considered liquidating most of my collection. However, just recently I bought a house and let me tell you that unpacking and going through all my old minis was so much fun and I was so glad at that moment that I kept them.

I know what u mean. The amount of times with my gaming group when someone mentions a mini and I say, "I've got that...... in a box". It's actually become a meme to me. Some of them even finish the sentence b4 I do. Or even steal the saying and twist it, "have you got that mini.... in a box"?

A year ago I walked past a Games Workshop store with my 10 year old who dragged me in (after I peered in the window for a few minutes!). Shortly after I dug all my old minis and gaming stuff from my Dad's attic and I'm regularly painting again, but now with my son. It was a real nostalgia trip to look back at the minis I painted 25 years ago and to see the progression I made back then, after a year of painting I am of a comparable standard to when i was 15! Thanks for this video :)

From 1988 thru 1995 I had painted and amassed a collection of D&D/Fantasy minis of around 200+ (Ral Partha & Grenadier mostly). In 1997, my entire collection was stolen. I lament their loss to this day. I have no pics to show for my work either. It was such a massive blow that it was another 10 years before I even thought of getting back into the hobby.

I started playing in early 90's (at about 16-18), my son then got into the hobby about 2007, again stopped playing about 2014, he got into playing basketball for his country, now my son is 21 and back into the game, along with me. still have kept our mini's and we are both starting again in 2020, with some of our crappy painted minis, conversions , proxied units (space wolves using dire wolves and kit bashed orcs). After watching this kinda glad i didn't sell them, enjoying painting and looking forward to playing again and so is my son!, good video

I was once going to sell an unpainted Carnifex because I had just that. Bit I decided I'd never get another chance to paint one so I built and painted it. Then I just added all these other Tyrannids around it. Haven't actually played with them yet but they've been on some demo tables for my club. One day they'll get a run in Swatters.

So true you should hold on to your armies!! One of my few real regrets is selling my Tau that I'd learned how to paint on and spent loads of hours army planning, painting in the standard scheme and then re-painting in a dusted maroon and light blue urban scheme, to my local hobby shop to (kinda?) finance a transition to fantasy via the Skull Pass box.... right before I moved towns and my buddies moved on to other past times. Pretty bad decision looking back on it and really wish I had em today

  • @omegaglory1

I completely get what you mean about nostalgia. At the peak of my hobby, I had three armies - Space wolves, Eldar, Necrons - but lack of space and a gradual loss of interest meant I sold off two of the armies. However I kept my Space wolves, always intending to go back at some point and paint more and redo the paint scheme. A couple of years ago I finally got round to doing this and redid my paint work. I tidied things up, adding shading/highlighting, redoing the bases and varnishing them. In some cases, I took apart models that I wasn't 100% happy with and gave them new poses and parts. I may have largely moved on from Warhammer but I still look back with fond memories. I kept my Space wolves as a reminder of those happy and more carefree times, as something to show for my old hobby. I'm glad I never parted with them and I imagine I'll hold onto them until I die!

Cool really. To be noted, I sold two copies of Zombiecide (season 1 and that fantasy version whatever it was called) with all the figures painted up, I have made a commision paint job of an AoS chaos army and I painted about 200 Malifaux figures just for my own amusement (and tossed them all when I was going to move and had no idea where to put them), and on top of that probably 100's of figures in other scales, for other games and so on - all gone. And frankly, whenever someone else got them (ie not the trashcan), I have felt pretty happy. People have liked my figures and have been happy to use them to play with. And as long as I know that, and that they are being used as they are supposed to and not chewing toys for dogs, I'm happy. I don't miss them.

Hey Scott! I remember being 10 years old and picking up my first Eldar Vyper, exactly the same year as yourself actually! I had the same thing as well, kicking off painting LOTR models but falling in love with 40k. I was playing up until I was about maybe 16 years old and ended up stopping for a few years when I went to college (UK) and studied music. I only picked it up again about 2 maybe 3 years ago? I've been slowly progressing through an army of Dark Angels, and still haven't finished them, but I'm kinda hoping I'm able to get them done now the UK's on lockdown.
I genuinely really loved this video as it made me feel so nostalgic for my old armies and reminded me when I use to enter Youngblood competitions every year - thank you for this, it really brought a smile to my face!

When you come up on your mid 30s, I'll be curious how opinions may change. I've held onto everything since coming back to the game in 2003ish, but regrettably sold my tyranids from 97 and it was my first army. I've recently come to the realization that I just can't fit it in like I did then and it's become a lot easier to break from the nostalgia. Truth is though, there is still a special spot for that first army still there.

Scott. I love your channel. I don’t watch every video but was super glad I watched this one because of the nostalgia hits. I just got back into LOTR SBG after over a decade of my minis (Rohan, Isengard and the Balrog) sitting as a sea of grey. You partly inspired me to return to painting and it has been a joy as a 30 yr old.
I was also surprised to hear we share the same love of wood elves. I’ve been a huge fan of these dark hippies since I was 9 and still have a large army that has yet to be painted for anxiety reasons. Using the LOTR digs as practice so I can really nail the beautiful sculpts from old and new woodies and sylvaneth.
    Thanks again, you rock!
PS I’m a big metal fan so it’s fun that you’re loosely themed that way

Made me have a look at my old minis. Mostly LotR as well. I still got an old army of Harad lying arround from ages ago, including a Mûmak. Those were fun times..
Also fitting shirt for a walk down memory lane!

I just came across some minis I painted back in the early 80's. What an eye opener, I really sucked. I recently got back into painting, so I've been stripping some of the better sculpts and repainting them as short fun breaks while I paint my Blackstone Fortress box.
It's interesting to look back at stuff you thought was cool when you were young.

Here's one for you Scott. There are a lot of tutorials around the place for NMM and typically this is gold or silver.
With the newer faction for Death coming out soon, I wonder if you would have any thoughts on Black metal or other cold tones (dark blue/green/purple) and how to accomplish this look from a very dark base as opposed to the mid tone that is used commonly for the gold/silver

I remember like 3 or 4 years ago, when i was a young lad, someone on ebay was selling a MASSIVE army of orks that was all tau looted vehicles and weapons. It was being sold on an auction so i hope who ever sold that army got a lot, or regrets it. They were very well painted and i want to know who made them because it was probably the coolest thing ive ever seen.

I've rebuilt some shade of Space Marine army...four times...Each time I sell it and inevitably get pulled back to them for one reason or another. I am currently building Crimson Fists. I told my friend that if I ever say to him "I am thinking of selling my marines" It is his job to stop me and say "Pack them in a box, you will just end up rebuilding the army 2 years from now like clockwork."

I had a huge collection of Rogue Trader era Marines and Imperial Guard (including an original Land Raider, on sprues and in the original box, and on sprue, in box "Space Dwarves") from when I was hard into 40K in the 90s (~92-98). I'll never get any of it back, and 20 years later, when I'm getting back into 40K, I highly regret that. Not that they would've survived the countless moves I've made (including to other countries), but who knows? Think twice before you sell your armies!

I enjoyed seeing your collection. I have sold a lot of my own minis in the past and certainly regret selling some of them. Not all of them mind you as with armies I no longer play I do like the idea of someone else getting enjoyment out of them when I no longer play them

Great video! You're from Minnesota? Me too although much older than you. I got into minis for D&D purposes starting about 3 years ago. I mostly work with re-purposed/re-imagined stuff and I can't paint anywhere in your league. Still, after seeing your collection, I feel pretty good about the one I've hodgepodged together. For me, it's all about gaming options; gets after something similar to you talking about how the background can help you know how to paint a mini. When you see a mini, you just start to get ideas for the game. Super job!

My first minis sit in my garage in a pseudo rubbish bin. Old 1/72 Napoleonics painted in enamels. Didn't know about undercoating, no inks in that day and no shading though I was aiming for mass to paint the picture. (Didja see what I did there?) Any how, I had 120 British soldiers in a tight square with a couple of RHA guns and was just beginning to start the French Cuirassiers who would be charging the square. It died in an instant when my art teacher found out I was working on something out of school and asked. When I told him what he put it down like a horse with a broken leg. Took me a couple of years to get back into it with 28mm metals, still Napoleonics but I had discovered technique, acrylics and gaming

This was such a lovely video, made me very nostalgic! Unfortunately, in a moment of desperation, I sold my 4000 points worth of Necrons a few years ago as I was out of the hobby and didn't think I'd get back into it. Fast forward literally 2 months and 8th edition 40k came out and here I am with 2 cabinets full of models. Was nice seeing your collection dude! Much love from a fellow mini tuber :)
