Time to say a massive thanks to John for swiftly bringing this aeroplane back to life, and here is the back story. The aeroplane was owned by a good friend of mine, John P who I flew with back in the 70's and 80's. There were a small group of us who flew slope, we flew Baildon, Otley Chevin and Meanwood Ridge around the Leeds area as well as flying thermal and power at Cookridge. John's Alpina was always a stunning looking aeroplane and gave him great pleasure. As time progressed, John moved away and eventually stopped flying. We discussed the Alpina and I agreed to look after it, hopefully restore it, or ensure that it found a good custodian for the future. Time progressed and as I subscribed to his channel and eventually chatted to John, he expressed a real interest in the Alpina, but transport was an issue and Covid got in the way. I knew he was THE person to look after it for the future.
I fly a PC-12 for a family and they wanted to go to Newquay - I swiftly got back in touch with John W and at short notice, earlier this month, we met at a blustery Newquay airport, carefully extracted the Alpina and another delta I made back in the day. All too brief a meet, but I knew both models were now in good hands.
To say that both flew again in only 10 days is quite frankly astonishing and a testament to John's dedication.
John P has seen the video and is extremely pleased indeed.
Well done John and thank you for bringing the Alpina back to flight !!!!

Yesterday after several years of printing out models, I managed to get a 75% scaled down 3DLabs P51D flying out in the back field in a strong breeze. Up until that point it kept tip stalling into the ground. A few repairs later and some head scratching, we managed to get it aloft. Nice video John and glad to see that bird flying again.

Multiplex make an updated 4 metre carbon version, the Alpina Carbotec, but you may need to have it made to order. Alternatively Tangent Modelltechnik offer the Graupner version (grp fuselage and foam/veneer wings) in 3, 4 and 5 metre versions. The Alpina is still very much alive and well and of course is the quintessential alpine soarer.

The designer appears to be a certain Hans Glatthorn, according to a post in the German rc-network forum. (I cannot seem to post links here, but if you are interested, search for „Der Vater der Alpina-Familie“.) Like everything on the internet, you might want to take this information with a grain of salt, but I don't have found any reasons to doubt it is authentic and maybe it helps with further research. The post would translate like this:
"Several people have asked about the father of the Alpina: humbly, it is me, Hans Glatthorn. The Alpina was the first 4-metre glider from a major manufacturer. It became the greatest success ever achieved by a 4-metre model in all its variants. To date, over 10,000 models have been sold in the different variants, which is 40 kilometres of wingspan. The Graupner company still has family members of this model family in its range today. At that time (approx. 1985) I was head of the model construction department of Multiplex and had set my mind on bringing such a model to the market. The ASW 17 with a wingspan of 4 metres, designed by the Reh brothers and distributed by A. Schaufler, was the benchmark at that time. I often and gladly flew it on the Teck. I readily admit that I was influenced by this success in the construction of the Alpina, as is the case with every designer who is oriented towards the state of the art. But the differences between the ASW 17 and the Alpina are significant. For example, the ASW 17 had the Ritz 3 on it, the Alpina the Ritz 2. There is a world of difference between the two. The ASW 17 was designed more for climbing, the Alpina more for planing. The Alpina hull was an enlargement of our own original Flamingo designed by Gerhard Allgaier. The Alpina was constantly developed further. The Alpina magic was another milestone on the Alpina's road to success. Increasing the range of applications by changing the wingspan was a great thing at the time, and still is today. After I left MPX, the Alpina was given a complete overhaul - it had earned it. The Alpina 4001 received a new profile with flaps. A further increase in the range of uses. I still enjoy flying this model as a glider and electric glider. Alpinas of every generation are represented in our club. It always pleases me to see how the original Alpina can still keep up well with the most modern gliders, proof of the correctness of the concept. The whole history of the Alpina would fill a book, maybe I'll write one someday."

  • @1971Flieger

Ritz profile. Needs a lot of load to run perfect. Otherwise it's flying like a bag of nuts.
