DCS F-14A Tomcat First Flight & First Impressions!

- Hey guys! Its finally here! The first of the F-14A variants to be included in Heatblur's Tomcat module for DCS World!
Due to this F-14A being a very late variant of the jet, most DCS World pilots will not notice any difference in the avionics or handling of the jet right off the bat, but once you fly her around for a but you will definitely notice a difference with the problematic TF-30 Engines that separates the A from the B.
While the TF-30's will certainly challenge many DCS World pilots it is great to have the most numerous and common variant of the F-14 Tomcat in DCS World!
I am sure this huge addition to DCS World will be welcomed by many pilots, mission makers and content creators... Thanks heatblur!

Huge thanks to Heatblur for bringing us this awesome new addition to DCS World! I think a lot of pilots, mission makers and content creators are really gonna love abusing those old TF-30 engines!
AWESOME
how did you manage to use the pod by ur self????
I somehow hope their next full module will have these engines as well! :)
Or RB199s ;)
Are you running VR or Track IR? VR performance has taken a dive for me lately, forcing me to revert back to TrackIR.
@@WombRaider7878 no he is using track IR
She's a fun bird, but my god was I spoiled by the B. You can definitely tell the difference in power and efficiency.
I'll always prefer the B, but I do love the burner plume of the TF30.
Loving the A but has anyone tried Air to Air refuelling, I cannot seem to contact the tanker via radio and I can’t see what I am doing incorrectly , tacan is working fine. Any help much appreciated 👍🏻
@@dobbo4596 are you on the same radio frequency and contacting the correct tanker?
@@nippleflexer3630 thanks for the reply all sorted now my friend
The F-14A inlets were designed for the F100 engine (also used on F-15}. However, delays in that engine development program threatened the F-14 program schedule and the Navy took the subpar TF30 because it was available. Once the F100 was available, the Navy could not pry any engines out the USAF’s hands.
The TF30s were susceptible to compressor stalls any time the airflow into the inlets was disturbed. This occurred in the high AOA regime and excess yaw attitudes (i.e., flat spins).
As the F110 equipped F-14B and D show, the F-14 would have been even more deadly if they had put the F100 in it to start with.
The F-110 made more thrust than the P&W F-100 engines. The F-100 engines only 5000 lbsf combined more than the TF-030 engines (20,900 lbsf vs 23,400 lbsf). The difference was mostly that F-14 was heavier than the F-15. That is why there is a 10,000 lbsf of thrust more in the GE F-110 compared to P&W F-100 (rises to 60,400 at Mach 0.9 in the F-14 B/D), which is why F-14 had the F-110 engines. Grumman never considered the F-100 engine for the F-14 as it needed much more powerful engines.
@@2ZZGE100 I worked on the F-14 program for 7 years at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). The original F100 was intended for F-14 and FX (eventually F-15) programs when the aircraft went into development in the late 60s. The F100 program fell behind schedule and the Navy pressed the TF30 into service, expecting to replace the engine down the road. This was the original F-14B. For reasons only known to high level decision makers, the Navy cancelled their order for the USN varient (F401) and went with the bird in the hand. I guarantee you that the sticks would have preferred any extra thrust and engines matched to the inlets.
GE came to us in the mid-80s with the idea of using the F110. After demonstrating superior performance, we got them into the last 38 As off the F-14 line before F-14D production started and retrofitted them to 48 fleet As. Originally, these were F-14A+s. It was the early 90s when they officially became F-14Bs. We could have retrofitted more As but the programm office wanted to build new Ds and felt retrofitting would endanger funding for D production. In the end, the F/A-18 killed the F-14 and A-6 programs. It took them 30 years but they finally got the EA-6B mission.
In addition to being better matched to the inlets, the F110 had a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). That is what allows the pilot to jam the throttles from idle to full mil with impunity. The TF30 did not.
@@keithkempster5838 You are telling me all of the things I already know. The point I was making was GE-F110 engines were the most perfect engine F-14 could get. It gave a 1.16:1 thrust to weight in combat configuration and could be slammed in and out of afterburner all day at slow speed, high angle of attack. Some pilots even went as far as saying t was "overpowered" and it was "too much thrust" that needed to be managed carefully. Also, F-18 did not "kill" the F-14. F-14 was a casuality of cost cutting and Hornet mafia and Dick Cheney together wanting to kill Grumman. In the end, F-14 is the best platform Navy ever got. Nothing so far can match its overall capabilities.
Please do not mix up the US Navy F100 variant, which was the F401PW400 with the old USAF F100PW100 initial version. These were two different animals. The F100PW100 suffered a lot of compressor stalls and was expensive, at that time, when the development cost of the Tomcat program went out of control. So the USN took a less risky decision with the TF30 engines. Ironicly, meanwhile the F100PW100 went to be a very stable engine in the F-15A and F-16A fleet and had a quite good growth potential by the later 200/220 and the drastically redesigned -229, the TF30 remained a large and heavy, but an underpowered and unstable engine. The originally demanded F401PW400 had a little bit bigger compressor diameter and shorter afterburner chamber, but the same Laval nozzle and turkey feathers as the well known F100PW100/200 has. The original plan was the installation of the F401 engines from the 68th F-14A planes. The one and only F-14B which was the 7th prototype and called as Super Tomcat, tested by the F401PW400, had only a few flights.(you can see it on youtube) www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-grumman-03l.jpg
Later, this aircraft also got the TF30, but during the Great Engine War, in 1984, this particular aircraft retrofitted again to be the testbed of the General Electric F110GE400. The F110GE400 was the naval derivative of the USAF-related F110GE100, the competitor engine of the F100PW100. It was originally called as Derivative Fighter Engine, because the F110 was the less diameter, longer and slightly less thrust version of the F101GE102 from the B-1B bombers. To reduce the diameter, the number of the low pressure compressor stages increased from 2 to 3, and the HP stages also increased. The max dry thrust remained the same, but the slightly less airflow caused a less afterburner thrust on the F110. However, it is still more powerful than the F100PW100 had. But, the F401PW400 was different. Because the larger fan and increased airflow, the F401PW400 had significantly more thrust than the USAF variant F100 had and way more thrust as the TF30 ever produced. Actually, the static thrust of the cancelled F401PW400 has almost equal as the F110GE400 from the F-14A+ or B and D had a decade later. If the USN did not give up the F401 too early, the F-14A would be same thrust-oriented aircraft, as the F-15A became. The later F-14B and D finally got the same thrust by the F110, but with way more structural weight...
@@kolbola Both the P&W F-401 developed early for the F-14 and GE-F110 were both in the 28,000 lbsf thrust class. The F-100 that F-15A and F-16A on the other hand had 23,400 lbsf of max thrust.
The gun indication on the HUD is linked to the backup gun counter next to the hook, and it starts at 0 from cold starts like this. Part of the preflight flow needs to be setting that to the proper amount of ammo so the HUD indicates the proper amount.
Where do you put it in?
@@ligit5198 next to the hook handle there's a white rotary knob and a counter. Rotate the knob until the counter says 690
@@ustio834 wow thanks don't remember seeing this in chucks guide. Always wondered why its's 0.
Just one hint for placing the aircraft correctly: when the guy waves his arms straight up/down it does not mean "taxi towards me" but it means "taxi straight ahead". He will indicate a left turn when you´re supposed to turn towards him. But very nice video!

You two mess up, just this much... And I’ll have you flying a cargo plane, full of rubber dog shit outta Hong Kong!
Spudknocker, regarding the gun display showing zero.....Look to the right side of the cockpit near the tailhook lever. You should see a window with three numbers and a knob that rotates. That is the 'ammo counter' and you can spin it up to the loadout quantity. If memory serves, it maxes out at 690 and the typical loadout is 670. The first digit in that ammo counter window is repeated in the hud display. Give that a shot and see if that works for you.

If you want to see where the INS alignment is, just put the pilot radar repeater on and watch the carrot scroll slowly from left to right...it will turn into a diamond close to the end...of fine alignment...
Why do I suspect you’ve got a VKB throttle...
Matthew Kozachek I’ll never tell!
Its virpil
Virpil, "VPC throttle" in the controls
So we still need to wait for the older F14A variants
Yes sir!
This one made sense since it's basically the same F-14 we have but with TF-30
Here’s where it doesn’t look right. If this F-14A we have the F-14A-135-GR (late) model, then where are the ECMs underneath the disabled glove vanes? Block 130, 135, and 140 variants have ECMs underneath the glove vanes and Heatblur still did not even add the ECMs on the F-14A-135-GR (both late and the upcoming early model). Also, the bureau number for each livery on the F-14A-135-GR are not even later models. They’re F-14A-120-GR liveries.
Edit: Heatblur announced in the June Roadmap they will add the ECMs on the F-14B.
That's interesting about the F-14s operating with F-15Es. When I was in Iraq we got reports of suspicious activity on the MSR. Someone was running in and out of the middle of the roadway. Turned out is was an F-14 that spotted the guy. I never found out if anything came of that.
Thats really cool!
Robert McNamara had strong reasons for wanting to have commonality within the DoD and the military services. 1: President Kennedy brought him in because of his organizational skills in private business and saw him as a way to get control of unruly military leadership. 2: During the Eisenhower administration, several studies of the DoD and the US government intelligence functions revealed (and recommended) that there was a lot of duplication within the government, the military service chiefs w did not corporate, and a lot of military intelligence, procurement, testing, and evaluation functions were done piecemeal without any true civilian oversight. Bottom line, McNamara came into the Sec. Def. position to help regain civilian oversight and control over military programs and spending, which he did. But he also ran afoul of the Joint Chiefs who were use to side stepping the Sec Def and operating autonomously. In addition, the Sec of Defense position was only 14 years old when Kennedy appointed McNamara. Throughout the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, the Sec. Def. was seen as a "secondary job" with no real power over the military. A lot of what McNamara did laid the groundwork for the Goldwater-Nichols act of 1986, which completely changed the military command structure.
You might have been too fast when you lowered the flaps and they got stuck. I bumped my flap switch on my throttle twice dogfighting in the F-14A today and broke 'em both times.
🤦🏻♂️ You really aren't familiar with the F-14A/B? You have to dial in the gun ammo on a tiny pin to the right off the tail hook handle. It has a little window with the number. Just twist it to 680...
Damn its out already wow.
Its pretty cool!
ah crap.. makes me wanna fly again. Might fire up DCS VR tonight, this is free if you already own the B am I right?

could not stop staring at the completely untrimmed rudder the entire flight. They put the turn and bank indicator 2 inches in front of your face for a reason..
The TF-30 engine was accepted as interim propulsion pending development F4401 engine. ( According to "Modern Air Combat" by Bill Gunston & Mike Spick cerca 1983 )
and then the politicians shafted them
The F401 engine was a navalised version of the F-15's F100 engine. The F100 was having serious development issues in the 1970s, which was why the USN decided to stay with the interim TF30 and cancel work on the F401. However then the TF30 turned out to have issues only a little less serious than the F100 when installed in the F-14. The F-15's engines only became good by about the late 1970s after a lot of work. With hindsight the USN would probably have been better off staying with the F401, however the politicians weren't happy with how expensive the F-14 was proving to be so a new engine was a difficult sell. They took a lot of convincing before providing funding for the F110 engine upgrade.
@@Akm72 Thanks for that! I learned something new.
I have every book in the series.
I hope they add the VF-31 skins
just a little advice: someone already told you about the number of guns rounds, but your pipper is not actually on the gun sight line. For being more accurate you should set the Elev lead knob to +53mils (milliradians). You'll find the knob just at the bottom of the right vertical consolle (exactly, the same of the gun rounds knob/hud/hook etc.etc.). It's still accurate, not a big deal even without doing it, but doing that will improve certainly the accuracy, especially in a/g where you can't lock a target with the radar. And as always ''Anytime baby'' ;)
I just want to say thank you for your discord server found someone to help me with f16 and im learning alot now

@@Jason-vm3lz Yes it does. Excellent alternative to harassing your friends to backseat with you. Take note that it does require extra controls binding
Is this still only in OB, if so should I get OB separate from the release version of the game?
Many players just run OB and only switch branches if there's a critical bug that spoils their enjoyment/preferred module. Switching branches is a tab away in Steam or a command line option for the regular updater. OTOH if you have the HD space the OB installer *should* pick up on your current install and copy most of the OB files from your regular install before DL the rest of the ~1.6GB update.
@@Ramsay58 in the time that I have been playing DCS I have only run OB, if you play pretty casually like me I don’t think you will run into many critical bugs. If you do they are normally patched in no time. If you are willing to take a couple days off from DCS to wait for a patch that fixes a bug every once in a while, I would say it’s well worth playing OB.
Why even use stable at all?
@@maku4814 Choice and there are times DCS can be *problematic* i.e. a Windows Insider build made certain versions of DCS crash for ~3 months two years ago. This year 2.5.5 --> 2.5.6 broke the AI behaviour and many paid DLC campaign missions were broken/unusable for +6 months until the core game engine was fixed by ED. I own most modules and many other games, so can switch when there's a problem - not everyone is as lucky or flexible.
The F-14A and the TF-30, was probably one of the worst Engine/Airframe combinations ever put together. The result was an underpowered plane with a dangerous tendency towards compressor stalls at high AoA. And this cost the navy several aircraft and the lives of several aircrews. When the TF-30s were finally replaced with the GE F-110-GE-400 engines the Tomcat became a much more reliable aircraft

Please do a minimum radius turn and maximum performance time-to-climb comparison against the F-14B. When F-14Bs first met F-15Cs, the Eagles pilots (thinking they were facing F-14As which often dropped out of the sky past angels 30) were flabbergasted when they saw F-14Bs maintaining vertical climbs with the F-15s past 45,000 feet. Another bit of VF-154 trivia. They are the only Tomcat squadron that had one of their birds fixed by an HT. Hull Technicians are engineers and work at the opposite part of the ship. Short story the cable connecting the cannon broke no spares existed and the squadron CO got really creative. Btw I was the HT that fixed it. They also made a flight of 2 SU-24's and one SU-27 decide it was time to pack it up and go home. They had fun teasing hornetts.... but for some odd reason they didn't want to play with the Cats.
Hey Spud. Always loved the F14 but new to this on here. This was my first flight with you and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done for your mission well accomplished and for trapping the 2 wire considering u were new to it! 😄👌
As I recall, the A sucked, and as I still remember, everyone stopped flying the F-14A because the rarer B model was better, even as limited as it was. Are they ever bringing us the D model?

22:38 You have to set the ammo counter up right next to the hook lever and it's always been like that for the B as well unless you're hot starting. 670 should be the number, but I tend to put it at just 650 to have just a little bit left when it tells me I'm out. Actually, also because I like to set my burst length to 50 (via ME or kneeboard; RShift + RAlt + 4 a few times) and then I know I got 13 of those bursts and the other 21 rounds after that when it's displaying 0.

Maybe I'm wrong but does the HUD seem a bit smoother than in the B model? The refresh rate looks better. It's one of the things I really lament about the Tom Cat. Love the jet, just don't like the HUD.
Flashlight series of fighters? If I recall those were bombers and recon aircraft. The Foxbat line of fighters were pure missile slingers.
Were you grounded due to SARS2? You forgot the marshall signals. Turn right means turn, straight means go straight (even if not aligned, then left to align, then straight again)
Does it look like the F-14A has a rear facing ECM antenna on the right vertical stabilizer????
Spudknocker, do you mess around with the Skynet/Moose IADS/Interceptor stuff in your created missions?
I've been playing around with the demo-missions they have, but it would be great to have someone make a modest walkthrough on how to setup the IADS and then script the potential for triggered interceptors to be launched if you stray too far.
hey Spudknocker. Great video.....as always. Wish I watched this before spending an hour last night rebinding all my controls! hey ho. I really enjoy this new model, I think she is possibly even better in a guns only BFM and would be interesting to see a A vs B fight sometime. The lag in the engines is going to take a little getting used to though, especially during case recoveries. Heatblur are in my mind head and shoulders above everyone else in DCS in what they offer up. I love this module!
Turn the Master Arm off. :)
I always fly my descent on RTB in A/G HUD mode actually. For 3 reasons: I got that TVV, the ORD thing telling me my master arm is still on if it's not crossed out and that altimeter going up to ~ 15k. When going below ~ 1.5 - 2k I switch to landing mode to get more increments on the ladder and the radar altimeter on the right hand side. And TBH, that became my main mode even for cruising so I don't have to look down to see if I'm still at my altitude or not. IRL you'd very much feel any change in flight direction, but since we don't have that in a sim... ;)
This looks amazing, I've never tried DCS. Are you flying in VR?
