I simply wanted to check into reading a public domain novel for a UA-cam video.

Please correct me if I am wrong. It’s only Amazon (and maybe some other major companies) that come back and tell you if too many versions of a particular book is out? So does that mean I could for example create my version of the book and offer it on my website or patreon for download instead without a kindle version and just audio on its own?

Correct! This is an Amazon/acx specific issue, so if you go to places like Spoken Realms, FindAway, or publish on your own site you will not have this issue.

Is it only Amazon where you run into the problem of too many copies? A couple friends and I were interested in trying to put ourselves out as audiobook narrators. We were going to make UA-cam videos of us narrating public domain books and a website woth our profiles as well. Could we do that? Or do we need to make sure it isn't too popular of a book for those purposes too?

Correct, it's specifically and Acx/Amazon issue. You can absolutely post to UA-cam, and I would think for a short book or a children's book that will work. The question is, in terms of marketing yourself to publishers, they typically look to places like Audible to see your credits, and then they won't be there, so it depends what you're ultimate goal is. If it is simply to create great content, then go for it!

@@lauraschreibervoice I'm at the very beginning of figuring this all out so I'm not 100% sure what my goals are. I know my goal with the public domain books is to get used to editing and figuring out how long a book would realistically take me at my current starting point. I wanted to be able to use them or at least chunks of them as demos and switch my demos to real work as I get real work.

In the UK, books enter the public domain after the author's death plus 70 years.
Winnie-the-Pooh is public domain in the US but won't be in the UK until 2027.
Copyright laws vary across the world.
