    Immigration can be helpful if used correctly. Flooding any place with massive amounts on foreigners can throw the native culture out of balance, and create tons of animosity between the locals and immigrants. However, controlled number of immigrants (strictly vetted) for certain skills that are not being fulfilled by the locals should be welcomed, as long as they agree to abide by all local laws.

    A country like Iceland provides a perfect textbook example of what happens when a homogeneous community that shares the same culture and traditions, decides to introduce people from outside who come from a different way of life. There tends to be a reduction in the social capital that many fortunate societies take for granted. If you don´t feel you understand the people around you, reciprocal trust diminishes and there is an inclination among people to stick to those people they feel familiar with. In Sweden, during the 1970s, waves of migrants came, but the inability to absorb and assimilate the newcomers naturally led people to once again migrate internally to areas where they felt they belonged. This only diminished the social capital and trust within Sweden which was hugely responsible for making it such a successful socialist model.

    • @Leif208

      You are exactly correct. Diversity is what fractures a society. Every multicultural society or county has lots of problems. You guys don't get it. Nor do you understand why things are different in the USA (and other diverse countries) versus Scandinavian countries. One of the biggest reasons why things seem to be better, is due to the strong sense of community. It's almost like everyone sees each other as part of a very large extended family. When you do so, you tend to be not so individualistic, but more civic minded (why would you steal from your family, or why would you litter on your family's property). There's even a sense that since we all have the same basic values and background, we can trust that no one will take advantage of each other, which will often prompt government/citizen cooperation, like healthcare (unlike in the USA, where the government is often seen as untrustworthy and only out to benefit certain groups). Do you all know why this is? It's due to the basic ethnic homogeneous nature of the population, whose identity is one of the common group of citizens with the same basic values and background, whereas in the US, we're so different (and those differences are becoming even more pronounced lately), that our identity is more individualistic and, therefore, less civic minded, common good minded, and everyone tends to be more self-interested. etc. Now here's the part everyone will hate (except the honest people), the more Scandinavian countries (including Iceland) become more ethnically diverse, the more they will become like the USA in all the ways you don't like. It's already happening. As you promote ethnic diversity in Iceland, you're sowing the seeds of your own demise.

      @vp4744 7 років тому +4

      It was worse than Pakistan or Syria at one time, with all the fighting and killing. It's all documented in the Sagas. This is where the Irish were held as slaves. In fact there is no native Icelander. They are all from other parts of the world who settled there and for a time looted cities from Baghdad in the East to Canada in the West. For 200 years they were the most feared pirates. We aren't exactly talking about Disney pirates here. So you cannot selectively forget history while making blanket statements.

    Diversity is not necessarily a strength and, in fact, it is most often a societal weakness. From an article in the New York Times: "IT HAS BECOME increasingly popular to speak of racial and ethnic diversity as a civic strength. From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger.
    But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite. Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam -- famous for "Bowling Alone," his 2000 book on declining civic engagement -- has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as they do in the most homogenous settings. The study, the largest ever on civic engagement in America, found that virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings.
    "The extent of the effect is shocking," says Scott Page, a University of Michigan political scientist."

    Growing up in the U.S. is good bc you get so used to talking to people from every background, ethnicity, race, culture. Going to Europe (and particularly) the Scandinavian countries, you get the sense that these people aren't used to seeing or talking to people of color. They don't know how to interact diplomatically and with a certain openness to others. I grew up with friends from Ireland, Mexico, The Philippines, Korea, Jamaica, etc. I've come to the realization that diversity helps people grow and evolve to adapt what's best in a given culture. This is assuming of course that the economics are sound. Poverty usually tends to breed more anger and hatred.

    • @nilsyuan5778
      @nilsyuan5778 6 років тому +2

      Well how I see it is in an impoverished setting, diversity is way worse because of ignorance and difference in view points than a homogeneous society. Of course accepting everyone helps society progress more, but you can be accepting and welcoming and still be homogeneous and keep your own identity.

    when you keep spewing hate on certain group of people constantly and irrationally; you give them more reasons and motivation to be your enemy and bring challenge to your door step.on the other hand when you show respect and humility and acceptance to the other you open bridges and dialogue to converge and realize that people have more in common and can build lot of good things together at the expense of hate/fear .we live in 2017 no country in the world will remain isolated within it's secluded introverted culture no matter how detached it is from the world ; " Iceland is a good example " ignorance is the enemy of peace and it should be fought to be rooted out from all socities ; the 21th century is like no other ; all socities and cultures will interact it's our human destiny they won't be pure races nor cultures we shall all merge as one we will pick the best from one another; and throw the garbage mentality off ourselves; if anyone tries to fight such destiny will suffer and hurt him self before no other . it seems that humans never learned a lesson from their ancestors: how much blood should be shed before realising that hate has no room in our world and love always prevails; as for those who are too stubborn to realize that hate is a self inflicting harm weapon that could take you no where but few feet down the ground. as for those who are against migrants they should know , most of sane people don't want to leave their families and love ones if it wasn't for the tough circumstances and situations that can make life impossible to live; and come to countries where they hardly see sun nor people and have to eat unfresh food filled with toxic preservatives that comes miles away;have to put up with natives who look at them as enemies and hardly greet you in mornings.last but not least love & peace to the ill minded humans wherever they might be . that's their simple cure prescription.

    Once a non-native minority group make up enough of the population (won't take long, given Iceland's small population), they will also begin to make demands for cultural and political changes that go counter to the native way of life and culture. Here, for example, are a list of changes that must be made to "white" American culture, demands made by black Americans recently (not all black Americans think this way, but a significant and very vocal and powerful segment does). These demands aren't just counterproductive. It suggests that all pathways to success -- hard work, stable family structure, individual decision making -- represent complicity in white supremacy. Instead it incentivizes all the paths to failure.
    For example, under "future orientation," they list "delayed gratification" and planning for the future as ideas spread by white culture. Others aspects of whiteness include: "Objective, rational linear thinking"; "cause and effect relationships"; hard work being the key to "success"; respect for authority; "decision-making.” Even children having their own rooms in a household is somehow an example of white supremacy.
    Below are some examples copied directly from a website critical of racist “white” values, which values need to be changed in order to reflect the different ethnic makeup of the America.
    Racist White values:
    Self-reliance.
    Emphasis on the scientific method (objective, rational, linear thinking), cause and effect relationships, quantitative emphasis.
    History emphasizes European and western history.
    Work ethic. Hard word is key to success. Work before play.
    Future orientation. Plan for future. Delayed gratification.
    Time. Following rigid time schedules. Deadlines.
    Justice. Protecting property. Individual rights.
    Competition. Must always “do something” about a situation. Decision making.
    Communication. “English” rules. Written tradition. Avoid conflict. Don’t show emotion. Don’t discuss personal life. Be polite/civil.
    Are these examples of Iceland's society being "richened" by a diversity of different cultures? The naive think that all people with dramatice different cultures can always live harmoniously side by side. If there are minor differences it is possble, but not when values are so incompatible. These can't exist in the same space.
    So, if any of those so called "white" cultural values, also seem to be values you hold, get ready, Iceland, to have those values threatened. Right now, if you were to ask an Icelandic minority if they would ever impose their values on native Icelanders they would say, "of course not." But, that's only because there aren't enough of them yet. Just wait.

    Oh okay, I've always wanted to visit Iceland. It seem like such a beautiful place, it's culture and nature amazes me! So listen, I'm a black girl born in Kenya raised in America. How common are these view points, like the ones I'm seeing in the comments, about foreigners. I know EVERYONE won't be that way, not even the majority. But is it something I should prepare myself when I go there some day? Is Xenophobia that much of a problem?

      Most people in Iceland would never treat you this way. It's like most countries around the world really. However there are probably people that although will treat you with kindness and friendliness, would still prefer their own race over hanging out with you. It's just human nature.

    I wish when I went to Iceland the people were this kind, the only Icelandic people I ever met were horrible
    One man got angry at me when he was loading my bag onto the bus on the way back to the airport, I wanted to make sure the tag on my bag with my return destination on it did not fall of otherwise I'd have been fucked my bag would have gone missing and he was being so careless
    Another guy on the plane some fat guy with rosy red cheeks started yelling at me and others on the plane every time we walked past his seat to go to the toilet for no apparent reason he had plenty of room...
    And when I asked if a man spoke English and could tell me and friend directions before I finished talking he's like "NO I'M BUSY!" 😂

    I Agree with the young Guy when you are a foreigner but with some certain pact of culture & believes which is apparently NOT Suitable for the Country you go into are actually going to Harm the treaty and protocols of that Nation. So instead of propagating your culture in another place/nation such as Iceland you 1st Need to understand the cultural differences between yours and their. If you are an Outsider and staying peacefully then it's OK but when you disagree to integrate with other country's Norms and Values then you are literally causing severe damage to the countries Identity and Respect which they have Earned.
    I myself belong to a 3rd world Nation but I Strongly Agree the statement. Their opinion is there is NO problem if you are foreigner from any random nation but when you try to spread your thing to them which is NOT Good for them then it's a Major Problem.

I'm starting to think we should just stay in our own countries, hoping we don't have a war or any need to flee for being persecuted. Because people all over the world are starting to dislike people who aren't like them. So sad. I thought I might visit Iceland. Not now.
