  • Hallo Freunde! In this video I take a look at Rheinland-Pfalz, the home state of my wife. And it's absolutely amazing!
Also, the beer gave me an instant headache, so I won't be having one of those again! 😬

10:55 It is Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, a toll castle built on a rocky island in the Rhine near Kaub, which goes back to Ludwig the Bavarian, Count Palatine of the Rhine and later Roman-German king and emperor. It was her job to monitor the collection of the ship's duty at the payment office in Kaub on the right bank of the Rhine. Chains were stretched across the Rhine to stop ships at the castle until they had paid their toll.
16:00 The 12th century Eltz Castle and one of the most famous of its kind in Germany. It has been family-owned for 800 years and is one of the best-preserved castles from the early Middle Ages.

Believe the building in the middle of the river was a toll for using the riving if I'm not mistaken. Only purpose i can think of for such a structure.

The castle in the river is Burg Pfalzgrafenstein in Kaub. Among other „Things“ it has the perfect position to see how many boats or ships where coming, if those belonged to enemies or someone who tried to avoid paying taxes (that happened occasionally as you might have guessed already). They had weapons and smugglers weren’t too delighted about it. I think that they changed the appearance so they could break the ice that came along.

Hey Nate , the video was very nice with the many half- timbered houses and castles. You can really have a great holiday in Germany , whether in the north , west, east or south of Germany . There is so much nature, so many mountains, lakes and the sea , is simply beautiful.☺💜

If you want to see how they built in medieval, here is a nice visualisation ua-cam.com/video/nJgD6gyi0Wk/v-deo.html
Building this bridge took 45 years and it serves people for 621 years. Of course, it was damaged by floods many times through the ages but there are parts that lasted these six centuries without any problem. Here are some details about this bridge. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bridge

The home of my German football team, 1. FC Kaiserslautern. :) I've only been to Germany twice and both times in Berlin so I really want to see more of the country. Some day... some day...

Hi Nate, such a beautiful video of stunning scenery, castles, towns and rivers. I live a 30 minute train ride from York, a beautiful city in the UK, around 2 hours by rail from London for context (distance 200 miles), it still has the intact city walls which are open to the public at no cost to walk around the city, a steady stroll might take 2 hours, cobbled streets too, castle, and many old buildings, many in the wattle and daub which you mentioned about in the video, many in the UK were originally yellow and black and most likely in Germany too, take a look at the Shambles in York, it's the latest trend in highways in the UK 😂
Thank you for sharing this with us, it's clear that it is a place close to your heart, that makes it all the more special that you share it with us :)

To give some info where I can:
From 5:28 to ... we see my hometown of Mainz, which is also the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz.
5:28 First, we see the market-fountain located on the marketplace right in front of the Mainzer Dom in the heart of the city.
It apparently is one of the first renaissance-fountains, as well as one of the most important/famous.
5:30 Next, we see the Mainzer Dom itself. The original Dom dates back to roundabout the year 1000 AD. The then archbishop Willigis, who also worked as chancellor of king Otto I. (important person in german history) in the Holy Roman Empire, initiated it, but it unfortunately burned down on the day of its consecration. Only in 1031 the follow-up was finished and consecrated. Still, this dates our Dom back almost 1000 years.
5:32 The building we see at 5:33 is the destroyed church of St. Christoph. It dates back to 1330 AD. It was destroyed during WW2 and now serves as one of multiple memorials of the destruction and death the events of that time caused.
5:34 Next up, the building with the horse statue is the state museum. It holds many art-historical and culture-historical exhibits, dating all the way back to the roman times of Moguntiacum (original roman name of the city).
5:37 This, I think, is the church St. Peter., built in 1756.
5:39 The "Christuskirche" or church of Jesus Christ, a large (if not the biggest?) evangelical church in Mainz,, built in 1903, destroyed in WW2 and rebuilt in the early 50s.
5:41 This is the "Deutschhaus" where the parliament of Rheinland-Pfalz is located.
5:44 Second to last: the "Kurfürstliches Schloss" (en: Electoral Palace). Today a place for events, it is mostly known for the biggest Fastnachtssitzung of Mainz. (Fastnacht = our (and others) word for what Cologne calls Karneval) (Fastnachtssitzung = carnival session; a mix of musical and satiric/comedic-rethorical contributions).
5:46 And last but not least: The Eisenbahnbrücke (railway bridge). It was the first bridge connecting Mainz and the other riverbank on the Rhine in Hessen since one built during the reign of Charlemagne. Pedestrians and bikers can cross over the Rhine here as well, and can enjoy a really nice view while doing so.
If there are other people from Mainz who want to correct me on anything or add to it: feel free to do so.
I hope I didn't put in too much unnecessary info. I am just happy people discover something about my beautiful city and wanted to add to that :) .

Many castles and fortresses on the Rhine had for the respective prince or count, etc., the task to control the river. They demanded customs for the goods. At that time the ships still had to be pulled up the river with horses, and for those sailing downstream, often a chain or a two privateers was enough, they should not stop .And that's right, almost all historic buildings are subject to monument protection.Of course, the houses or castles of Inner are modernized, with modern heaters or power lines, etc. In order to properly renovate houses or castles or palaces according to the law, however, there are also subsidies from the individual states and also from the federal government. By the way, in the German rivers there is still a lot of gold. Only industrial gold exploration or extraction is forbidden everywhere. But with the old style the gold wash out is allowed. So if you want to have real Rheingold? 😄

And there were still some sites missing.
You were referring to "Denkmalschutz" (protection of buildings with historic value). There are several levels of this protection. The gist of it is, that you have to collaborate with the authorities. If you want to change anything (even when it's new paint) the authorities have to give permission first. In the example with the paint, they will tell you what kind of paint to use and which colors. Or if you have to replace a beam, they may tell you the same kind of wood (oak, chestnut) and to preferably buy a used beam (from a tear down) if possible. You get some tax incentives when you own a historic building, but you have to be the right kind of person. For most people, it's just not worth the hustle.

  • @timolynch149
    @timolynch149 Рік тому +1

Yup, that's how you translate Palatinate and since "Pfalz" is historically not a proper name but a function translating the name is linguistically correct. Many of the so called Pennsylvania Dutch are descendants of people who emigrated from the Palatinate. A count palatinate was at one point a rank above an ordinary count. An area adjacent to the "Pfalz", the "Kurpfalz" goes across state lines and is now mostly identical to the Rhine Neckar Metropolitan area (think Mannheim, Heidelberg, Ludwigshafen, Worms, Speyer). Kurzpfalz translates to Electoral Palatinate and was called that because the count palatine of it was one of the "prince-electors" who had the privilege to elect the emperor of the Roman Emperor. There's a LOT of documented history in that corner of the world with settlements that go all the way back to Roman times.
