The Pill: Ovulation?

🧿Back by popular demand is my fab niece @jannasayfie (grad student and resident young advisor to said-old-aunty extraordinaire;)
💙for all y’all in the back who HAVEN’T heard: WHEN YOU TAKE A COMBINED HORMONE CONTRACEPTIVE (CHC-ie the combined pill, patch, ring) you DO. NOT. OVULATE! (the “mini pill” that is progesterone only called norethindrone is a different story and mechanism FYI)
💙the “period” you get on these CHCs isn’t a TRUE period (ie a result of hormone pattern causing ovulation and then the shedding of the uterine lining resulting from the egg not being fertilized and not implanting in the lining-ie NOT being pregnant)…it is merely the pills schedule of 21-24 days of steady hormones with 4-7 days of “placebos” signaling to your uterus to release the small amount of uterine lining that has thickened in those previous weeks.
🧿AND it’s safe to skip your period! If you have painful or heavy periods OR (shocker) just really hate bleeding every month it is ok and SAFE to skip-“but it’s not natural” you may say, or be TOLD [by your well meaning mama OR by say, a blogger who heard it somewhere;)
🧿our response: “NO it’s NOT natural BUT neither is the CHC bc it’s very mechanism stops ovulation-which is “natural”-BUT more importantly departing from nature here is NOT DANGEROUS”.
🗣NOW is the CHC for everyone? NO….is skipping your period for EVERYONE ? NO! SOME humans with ovaries will annoying side effects and SOME will even have dangerous side effects-BUT like all in our world it’s a matter of YOUR PERSONAL “risks vs benefits” (MUCH. LIKE. DRIVING AS I always highlight!
🗣remember @biglovefiercejuju says “NOTHING is ever ‘only’, EVERYTHING is always ‘and’”
🧿and remember that each of our experience (in life AND on the pill!) is ONLY IUR EXPERIENCE and shouldn’t be used to shame and blame women (or their docs!) for being on it-it can be lifesaving for many who need it and yet it is NOT for everyone…
