Hello! Can I just say that this video is amazing! I'm currently studying BA Music Business and Entrepreneurship in London. Most people on this course already have an idea of what they want to do in the industry and are using the degree to get them there. On the other hand, I've found myself in a situation where I joined a course to learn more about the industry to see what piques my interest. Coming from a session-musician background, there never really were any resources that actually tried to match direct skills to possible roles in the industry and this video was pretty much what I've been looking for. Although I'm now pursuing a career in publishing, I still find this video to be an amazing resource for people trying to find their way in this daunting industry. Just wanted to say thanks for the value you're putting back into the community and the best of luck with the rest of your work! :)
as someone who wants to work in this industry but feels powerless due to the pandemic, this video got me excited for whats to come when live music does come back. my internship at a live event promoter was cancelled due to the pandemic so i felt as if i could never get my foot in the door (i also used to work at a venue before we got shut down). but watching this and knowing i have some of the skills you mentioned, i feel more comfortable attempt to put myself out there and finding these jobs to apply to. i really loved this video and will probably come back to it anytime i apply to a music related job !
thank you for this video! I recently just graduated and hope to get into the music industry. My dad works at Def Jam Recordings as their main Marketer and i hope to follow in his footsteps
Paige, welcome back! This is so wonderful and all of the jobs are really nicely explained! As someone who works primarily in live music, I can definetly agree that social skills are very important here, you actually need to talk to people everywhere, all of the goddamn time XD And yes, artist managers (and runners) are indeed glorified babysitters XD
Thank you, glad to be back!! Yeah, as I've started attending shows with the band, I've realized how much more tired I am at the end of the night... all the socializing wears me out 😂 Hope you're doing okay right now with live music on hiatus 💛
thank you so much for this video. Have been really worried, however, now I am excited and motivated to research and hunt down some jobs. thank you once again.
thank you so much for all the information! do you think you could make a video dealing specifically on what to go to school for different industry jobs? that’s where i’m having trouble deciding. thanks again in advance!
Hi I am a Producer and a studio engineer in the Bahamas. We are going through a struggle against the perdemic. I am now trying to work online. I Love the productions.
Hi page just saw your video, I graduated from NYU Clive Davis Institute of recording music March 2022 . What kind of job can I get with the certificate. I don't have anyone to help me. I can Sing. I sing Alto in a band at Church. I love Singing. Also I am a Healthcare Employee (Phlebotomist) i like Healthcare but i love music (Singing) Please help me. I ask a DJ. in the past years ago and he Sexual abused me . I want to either be a Gospel Singer or another job in the music ministry.
I always want to be a musician! I'm really good at Guitar!! And i always thought that being a MUSICIAN is not a job like performing onsatge or gigs, but i hope this will help in my career soon.
Being a musician can 100% be a job! And there's lots of ways to approach it to diversify outside of live performances. You could be a session musician and get hired in to play on other people's albums in studio, teach music lessons, form a wedding band (live performances where you don't have to convince an audience to show up 😂), sell your services on Fiverr... lots of options!! Should I make a video about this?
I have questions, I'm really good with networking and resourcefulness, I do alot of listening to music as well. Currently in Full Sail for Music production and over the past couple years i've been training myself to be to Disc Jockey, I'm still unsure where i fit in. I'm not to nervous of rejection just trying to lay low like everyone says and i have some disabilities. Im a veteran but my passion is in the music. I been using fl studios and logic and pro tools over the past few years. I been looking at the jobs for Soundcloud, but still kind of clueless, but I have started curating playlists. Thank you PS I think I would do good on like a radio show or something. Im kind of social...lol
Do you have any advice on how to get your foot in the door of the music industry for someone who already has 10+ years of experience in marketing, PR, and communications? Internships are great for young people starting out in their careers, but I'm sure there's demand for experienced marketers also?
I have been a teacher for the past 16 years and even though I have a knack for helping kids my passion has been always been music since I was a kid. Is it weird to say I feel the music at times. I am creative, patient and have actually promoted bands through media and also have been a merch girl. What area do you think would be a good direction for me!

Thanks a ton for making this video! Really appreciated learning all about the different ideas for music careers I could get into. And I Loved the choice to go with Animal Crossing Music - being a fan of Animal Crossing myself, that was a fun surprise to be immediately greeted with :) I had a question about music careers that I wanted to ask you - I just graduated from High School, and I was considering the idea of doing something in the music industry. For me, I really enjoy finding songs that I feel could be paired with certain types of scenes or moods (whether it's in like a dramatic sort of story-telling project, or more of a commercial/informative sort of project) and then organizing them so I have a collection of songs all related to a certain type of scene/emotion. And furthermore, while I haven't been doing this as much, I also really like the idea of trying to utilize these songs for scenes in projects that they fit with. But do you happen to know if there are really any jobs in the music industry are related to doing either of these things?

Yes and no. The manager doesn't need to go on tour, as they often have a roster of artists they're managing the careers of and going to meetings for. I would opt to go on tour with the band I'm currently managing just because they're still in early stages and I personally want to go on tour, but it's not required! A lot of management contracts also state that the manager is not a booking agent and will not be fully responsible for booking shows, but connections/opportunities they bring to the table can definitely include that too. It all depends on the manager and how they want to do things!
Thank you so much for this video, it was really eye opening for me. I’m 17 years old and have been able to perform on stages around my area as a pianist for a band. I want to be able to do this professionally and tour with other musicians while also being tech savvy when it comes to audio engineering (mixing/mastering). I’m also a pretty good public speaker and have an interest in finance/investing, so do you know any other paths that might be good for that? Thanks so much 🙏🏾
thanks for your videos, they're so helpful! I was wondering: I'm doing my B.Sc. in Psychology but I realized halfway through, that I'd love to pursue a career in music. Do you have an idea in which jobs it could be helpful that I studied psychology or where I could get my foot in with this?
honestly, that sounds like it would be beneficial in so many areas! less as like "this job requires this experience", but because it'll naturally make you better equipped to deal with personality types or managing how you deliver info. also great for artist managers or people working closely with talent because you can be cognizant of their mental health and current state of mind. I think marketing would be a good fit (since it's the psychology of how to get people to like the artist through ads, events, etc.)!
IM SO THANKFUL FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS!!!! you're a literal angel, but I do have a question, I think I want to study something within the liberal arts, do you think it would be useful for the music industry/ label?

I can't speak more specifically without knowing what you'd want to focus on, but I definitely think there's value in it for you. :)
Is it possible to be hired with no school/degree? I’ve been writing songs for other musicians for a year now, as well as visually directing music videos/photo shoots but this is all free lance work not through a company/agency and I have also recorded my own songs, I could go on but really music/art is everyday life for me bc there’s not a day I don’t have music in my life wether I’m writing songs/listening to beats/recording music and I’d love to work at a record label but I didn’t know if I needed schooling/degrees to be a candidate for internship or a job
100% yes!! it sounds like you're already doing a LOT of the things that will get you to where you want to be, and you might not even need to lock yourself down to just one company/label/etc because you can effectively do that work for anyone on your own! 🥳 What's your goal scenario? If things all went 100% exactly right, what would you be doing right now?
ohhhh then you're like me!! I have a problem with committing to one focus/career path because everything sounds interesting! I think the best way to look at is is like this -- nothing you do needs to be forever. you can start in marketing and then try your hand at publicity or get into working at venues or planning festivals. life is long, it would be a shame not to give yourself a chance to try different things! but if you find a starting point that feels natural to you, try getting started there and building on top of that as you go. :) also, I'm gonna make more of these videos, so lemme know if you have any specific questions I can make a video about!

I’m more of a producer but I would like to get into anything regarding music before my producing career kicks off. I’m not the office type and live sound is probably at a halt because of Covid-19. What could I do???
Yeah, COVID is kind of screwing up everything in this industry right now. 😪 Maybe working in a studio in another role, whether an apprenticeship or a front desk-type job could be good to connect with people in your field and get experience from being around it? Once these things are back up and running, I guess. I've also been seeing a lot of friends in production/engineering using Fiver to make extra cash. Maybe you could offer to listen to band's mixes and give them feedback? Could be a good way to get to know new bands that are looking for teams to work with! I'm going to talk to some friends in this field and see if they have any advice!
No. Produce music and sound effects for tv shows, videogames and presentation events. Pick a genre/style you're good at and stick with it. When I was doing music, people kept saying it's nothing more than a hobby. But when I found an actual lane outside of trying to BE A FAMOUS MUSICIAN people kept asking me about these BMI checks that kept coming in. These people's jobs wouldn't exist if we don't make the music for them to talk about.
LMAO great question! Uhhhhh my laptop gave up on me and didn't have the ability to even open video editing software, nevermind export it and get it uploaded. Just got myself a new desktop so I could get back to making videos!! 🤠

Girl where have you been
LMAO great question! Uhhhhh my laptop gave up on me and didn't have the ability to even open video editing software, nevermind export it and get it uploaded. Just got myself a new desktop so I could get back to making videos!! 🤠
Do you work in a record label?
Yesssssssss
Is it possible to be successful in this industry without being a communist? And what is an ANR(A&R?)? That's the one that really caught my attention.
