Thanks for your question Jiminy Cricket. The whole block universe thing always gets to me. The fact that my whole life has always existed and always will exist is beyond comprehension. I asked Professor Sean Carroll if the meal I just had down by the riverside prior to meeting him still existed . He replied that it doesn't "still" exist it just exists.

I really love to listen about the Maxwell equations compared with general relativity
I think I'm getting addicted to this series! Here's a suggestion for a future video: the Virial theorem. Lately I've been reading a book on cosmology, and it talks about astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky noticing the speeds of individual galaxies in a galaxy cluster being too fast for them to stay bound to the cluster, which I believe was the first evidence for the existence of dark matter. The book points out he used the Virial theorem on his analysis, but unfortunately doesn't really get too much into detail on how he used it.

@Brian Greene: As I understand an anti-electron mathematically is exactly the same as an electron travelling for forward through time except travels backwards - is this correct? If so, given the recent discovery of a 'parallel universe' (by NASA if not mistaken) where time goes in the opposite direction, would it not make sense that there was no 'dark matter' at the beginning, yet it will overwhelm the universe in the end, this supporting the cyclical big bang / singularity / repeat theory? Please correct me if I have anti- and negative-charge electrons mixed up and explain what difference this would make to this hypothesis. Many thanks. Dan.

Professor Greene, here is my question regarding big bang. I heard two descriptions recently. So first one claims that everything we have in the universe today originated from a marble size of mater or energy (not sure what correct description is). The second version claims that big bang did not happen from this small marble like object but that the entirety of the universe was extremely dense and hot. So do we know which version is more likely true and in case of the second version what was the size of the universe in its dense and hot state and has it expanded since then or just cooled down and matter created all the galaxies that spread around throughout entire space? For the exact explanation of the state of the entire universe at the big bang I would suggest viewing the Royal Institute's YT channel lecture by Dan Hopper "What happened at the begining of time" around 10:20. Someone asked (at 34:00 or so): "Are equations invented or discovered?"
Brian's answer was essentially: "I don't know."
I think I can come up with a better answer :b.
Let's define the terms first:
An equation is a *claim* that a certain relationship exists between things that are represented by symbols in the equation.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines invention as: "to design and/or create something that has never been made before"
Discovery on the other hand means: "to find information, a place, or an object, especially for the first time:" according the same dictionary.
So, inventing is about creating something new and discovering is about finding something that already exists.
Now, let's use the equation e=mc2 as an example. If you think Einstein invented, i.e. created it out of thin air, that would mean that energy, mass and the speed of light were not related the way his equation says before the year 1905. That is obviously nonsense. The relations between the these things certainly existed before Einstein *discovered* them and wrote down the symbolic representation of those relationships - namely the equation e=mc2.
On the other hand, I can write down an equation e=pm3. That equation is obviously incorrect. Those relationships do not exist in the physical reality nor in any axiomatic system I am aware of. That means I couldn't possibly discover it, since its impossible to discover something that does not exist in the first place. So the equation has to be my invention.
Thus the bottom line, IMHO, is:
Correct equations are always discovered, incorrect equations are always invented. Therefore the right answer to the original question "Are equations invented or discovered?" is: Yes, they are.
Esa Koivuniemi math is a tool. There needs to be an invented concept then the equation can be discovered. For example prime number is a concept, human invention, the infinite series of them is the discovery about them. Math is both invented and discovered in this sense. Physics only needs special cases of math and physical laws, applied to disposable models subject to change. Abstract math need not be discovering anything until there is first the invented concept.
@@RicardoMarlowFlamenco Well, my comment was a bit in the tongue in cheek department, because the view I presented is way too simplistic, to be frank.
That being said, I am symphatetic to your view of math as a tool and you're absolutely right IMO, in saying a discovery requires a concept for the thing(s) discoverd as a prerequisite.
However, the question: "are concepts inventions" is a whole another matter. We don't know all the gory details of how our brains form new concepts (as yet, that is). From what I've gathered about it, it may well be that it is in large parts based on pattern recognition (i.e discovering new patterns) and its not clear at all where the "invention" part fits in.
But yeah, this is an interesting topic.

Easy. Only two steps. Step one is start with postulates/axioms (assumptions or rules you make up) which is how you build a theory mathematically consistent with itself. Step two, is use your theory to predict something in the real world and then test that prediction. At the end, you know if your math reflects the real world or not. That’s all of science in a nutshell.
Why don't you evolved electromagnetism to include gravity like Einstein tried so long. This is why I ask more about Maxwell equations and general relativity. I always felt that something deep was connecting them both
Every mathematical relationship is both invented and discovered. The pattern is discovered, the equation which describes the pattern is the invented or interpreted component.
There is something I believe is faster than the speed of light and that would be consciousness. Just a thought.

The answer is this equation: 42=7*6. (According to Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, which is a good reading when you are being abducting from an Earth to be annihilated as part of some interstellar highway construction project.)
Of course. A clone is just a replication of the same DNA. It is not an android or a machine. A human clone would be as human as you or I. Consider the sheep clone Dolly. That was a "normal" sheep, but it did not result from sexual reproduction.
Thank you professor. It occurs to me that God, if he exist, wrote the laws of physics. He would be, by definition, the Creator. There is no way to prove His existence by testing or observing His creation. Physics is what we can observe. Metaphysics is that which goes beyond what we can observe, transcending the limits of our observations. Physics is the what, Metaphysics is the what for... the why. At the end of Physics, Metaphysics. At the end of Metaphysics, Physics. They chase each other around, always leaving more to be observed or discovered. Ultimately, you can only know God by Faith, there is no Proof of His existence. You must trust in Him and choose life, choose Love. Choose belief in that which you cannot prove, which is Faith. Physics and Metaphysics walk hand in hand in life, just as Faith and Science. Faith in God. Belief in Science. Live long and prosper. Love thy neighbor as thy self. Dude I'm not being rude here, but physics and metaphysics have no relation with each other. Physics describes motion and also explains why that motion happens(through forces that is). All the theories of physics have accurately described reality without the need of a creator. The reason why the laws of physics are the way they are is due to the multiverse, not because some God created them. There is no way any mystical being/entity could create the weirdness and probabilities associated with quantum mechanics. We also have the concept of irrational numbers like pi and e. These guys are unending. And when I mean unending I mean they have uncountable number of terms which are completely random. Yet we associate these numbers in our daily lives(at least in the lives of physicists and mathematicians). How could any being think/create such things.
