Spent a memorable evening in a Canadian bar with the 'lads' after one of their sell-out concerts, many a good joke told, and experiences shared, plus a pint or five of Guinness too! A fabulous bunch of men, superb musicians all, Derek Bell was his usual 'quiet' self!! How many realise actually how talented DerekBell was? He was a very talented Harpsichordist, along with the Irish Harp, and Oboe too! He was and is sadly missed by all.
I absolutely LOVE this song I just realized why don't they say "wed to a soldier" when it would fit the rhythm better? I say this after having listened for years to this, lol
Thanks for the kind words! I believe we've uploaded four videos from this show. Go to the main WGBH Music channel and look at the Celtic playlist. They're all in there (along with many other great Celtic vids!)
I was a broke high school student in Asheville, NC, way long ago, heard they were coming through North Carolina. So I saved a little money, drove my beat up old car down to Raleigh, where I spent all my cash at a tax auction, hoping to parlay it into more money so I could afford the whole trip. I spent all my money buying junk jewelry that no one was interested in, but still managed to make it to the concert in Greensboro in time on what fumes were left in the gas tank. I don't remember how I managed to get back home.
So, I’m American and just came across this song (I love it btw). I get the overall theme about getting through hard times. I assume that’s what “the frost is all over” means. The cold and dark times have ended and now it’s time to celebrate new and brighter days. If the kettle boils over, refill it. If the cows eat the clover, replant. If your soldier husband dies at sea, learn to deal with your grief, and eventually remarry. Potatoes or “praties” have been dug up now that the snow has ended and it’s time to eat and celebrate and be thankful for what you have. It’s a good song with a very uplifting message. The only line I’m confused about is “Kitty lie over close to the wall”. What does that mean? Are they referring to a cat curled up in the corner of a room? Or is “kitty” a term for something else?
Not having any luck looking up the newer members [fiddle, bouzouki, singer] and surmise the American guitarist/singer is a guest rather than a member. Does anyone know?
Gee...silence. Well kitty is a woman's name and it's a conversation which takes place in a bed. These are English words and it was probably an English folk song originally before it became "lost" to Ireland.
@@Kitiwake answer appreciated. I probably should have just inferred it was something like that, but since the topics of conversation in the song go everywhere from marriage to potatoes, I figured I'd ask! XD
Two things 1. Is this a traditional Irish/Scottish tune? 2. Why is it that Folk Singers ALWAYS sound wonderful live...but mainstream ones sound terrible without electronic voice tuning
Well I wouldn't say can't play not that's not true just get pissed off with this shite that he's a god of piping when there's lads living like 15 minuites away from me my age who are like miles and miles better 👍
Trine730 no I wouldn't agree. Look at the likes of liam o flynn and Mick obrien sure? They all had the same opportunities yet the two I mentioned are gods. Putting paddy in the same genre as them would be like comparing a one armed whistle player to Sean potts...
Brian Crehan ... No one here is a god, but everyone has a different taste in music. Either you like the music of the Chieftains or you don't. Wasting your time being jealous at someone who has spent most of his life popularizing Irish music, is not particularly meaningful. I happen to like his kind of playing, but tend to like other masters as well. No one sound like the other, not at that level of skill anyway.
I raise a glass to me granda who loved all his blessed life
First Paddy Moloney video I found since hearing he passed. RIP Paddy
Paddy brought out the best performance from all the musicians & singers. He was truly an Irish chieftain !
We miss you Paddy.
I have to thank the Chieftains for introducing me to what has become a lifetime love of Celtic music and thank you for posting this.
A gem of a post. Thanks a million
Thank you Paddy for all the music what a legacy.
I think this song goes for infinity.
The. Frost is all over
The essence of great music, happy and lively tunes
Always a joy to hear a tune from them.
I got to see The Chieftains live in Philadelphia a few years ago. Their live shows are fantastic.
Fab music
That fiddle at 0:42... *chef’s kiss*
WGBH, thank you for posting so many outstanding videos. The Chieftains were showing everyone how it's done.
Excellent version of a classic Tune This version and the Planxty versions are my favorite for sure
Undoubtedly one of their best in full flow💚🎻
This version or the Mary Wallopers version?
Mighty stuff

Nice. The only version of this I knew was Planxty's. I like the more complete lyrics.
Who's the sexy bloke to the right playing fiddle. He danced at the end too. Fantastic music ❤
Cheez! Wonderful and who's the fiddle player?? Can't find him anywhere ;-((
오늘... 비오는 날...그들의 문화를 럴프하게 이해 하고저...
Wonderful!!! How many videos have you of Chieftains in WGBH? Thanks!
Cunla dear, don't come any near to me!
Not having any luck looking up the newer members [fiddle, bouzouki, singer] and surmise the American guitarist/singer is a guest rather than a member. Does anyone know?
Can someone explain to me what the line “kitty lie over close to the wall” means? It’s the only part I’m not able to figure out what it means.
Gee...silence.

Does anyone know the name of the last tune they play? 2:37
'Cunla'. It's also a song, not just a tune. Planxty do a great version on their 'well below the valley' album.

Fost all over me
isn't this Kitty Lie Over?
The song can be called by either name
I have seen it under the title "Summer has Come and We're all in the Clover"
Yeah, I think when I read up on it this song could be called in many different names. It's just so old of a song.
dunhill을 피면서...
Is this satire? I think I get it, actually maybe, I probably don't.
What nare. 44
Well played but planxtybetter
I like Krishna music
good to see paddy still can't play 👍
Brian Crehan what..........
Well I wouldn't say can't play not that's not true just get pissed off with this shite that he's a god of piping when there's lads living like 15 minuites away from me my age who are like miles and miles better 👍
Brian Crehan he's good for his time obviously people have improved and what is considered to be good has changed a lot

this was better with Punch Brothers
Frankly, this is an embarrassing version of " The Frost Is All Over ". The American just murders it. Too fast, and too American !!
Frankly you have no idea what the idea is about!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for leaving a comment.
