Loved this video! You explain things so well and have a great voice to listen too. Can't wait to check out all your other videos. Thanks so much for sharing all of your great info.
Thats something that is really cool about the higher end cameras like the red epic. They shoot the movies in RAW each frame can be changed just like a RAW image in photography
Great video. But for picture style I would make it so you record the flattest image possible (take down the contrast in camera and some saturation) so that you retain details in the shadows. This makes it easier to color correct/grade.
Good ideas. I NEED to check these settings. I always seem to forget something. It's normally WB or ISO, but could be any one of these things. Good advice. I shoot with a 7D and am learning just like you.
Dave this and all your other videos are awesome. I have canon 7d and the problem I am having is I never get a crisp, well focused video. Its always little blurry. After seeing this video what things I am doing wrong. I am going to give it a shot again with the settings and tips that you have recommended. I want to mostly record dance shows where there is lot of motion and low light or sometimes stage light. And getting well focused video is really difficult for me (as a beginner)
I think that is a generalized standard that most video people use. I wouldn't say it's important though. When I film at 30fps or less, I slow the shutter speed down as well especially inside because the lighting is dim, and at that fps you still get a dramatic strobe/animation/film/professional effect. In 60fps though, for me it always looked way too smooth like a home video, no matter what shutter speed. But you can change it to slow motion if you use 60fps.
Dave, I noticed on all your standing shots you can hear the reflections in the room. Have you thought about adding some Auralex foam squares to your walls so they will absorb the sound more?
*Hello David,* I'm an amateur photographer. I have a future vacation, a disneyland trip. I plan to use my D800 with lense 24-70mm with a glidecam that I recently purchase for the trip. My question is, *what type of set up should I use besides auto focus for this type of environment?* If theirs any tips n tricks, I would love to know it as well. _Thanks in advance!_
just found you and love your videos-- I just purchased a panasonic fz100 to shoot video and am having major buyers remorse because it shoots in the AVCHD mode which I am not used to- I am used to just shooting and using straight mov files which are easy to edit in simple programs like windows media live and such. I wonder if I should go buy a Canon which shoot in your standard 1080p mode-- (very confused and bummed out)
Your videos are great. What type of lens do you use? I just bought a 7d with the stock 28-135 lens, and I cant get the quality to work for the life of me, not sure what mode to use it on best. either way, I'm looking to buy a new lens for it, what are you using? Thanks Dave
I accidentally hit the timeline to the end and all I heard was." I everybody this is dave dugdale, alright talk to you later. I thought I got trolled lol. Daves vids are always entertaining and helpfull.
How do you adjust the saturation and contrast? I was told that you should shoot a flat image with reduced contrast and saturation to help color grading in post
@therondoshow sorry that you are annoyed, did you know I have close to 100 videos on my learningdslrvideo com site? I go into more detail on exposure and other issues like that. My site is free but there are other paid sites like Lyndia that you might like.
im getting very very annoyed that I can find tons of videos on WHAT to do, but nothing on HOW to do it. HOW do I adjust the exposure? HOW do I do these things? I am new to the T2i and I can't find good help anywhere!
I would suggest turning off the auto lighting optimizer and getting the cinestyle picture style made my technicolor. You will get a much cleaner image that way and you won't have the camera's tiny computer doing any pre-editing color correction. Just a thought. You've got great looking vids!
@drumat5280 Well there just normal lamps since i have no real good lighting in my room, so it sort of gives off an orange tint of color not sure I am explaining this right though, I guess you could say it's like a street light at night giving sort of a orange color, lol.
Second are your quality options. You are shooting in AVCHD, a pretty decent codec though it requires converting to use in some software. Your model probably has an MP4 mode to make things a bit quicker and easier but that one only goes up to 12Mbits. 24Mbit is more then 17Mbit. So FX is always the better choice. When it comes to quality that is. fh isn't to bad though, I shot with it [I have an A65] and it isn't bad. FX is just.. slightly more data.
Hi Dave, love your vids, I'm new to dslr, i was forced by my company to get it. Trying to get comfy with it, I got a t4i but need a 2nd camera (one for CU's and one for wides cause I cant stop to zoom in out when I shoot) was thinking 7d, cant afford 5dmark3 just yet, what say ye?
hey dave, I realy like your videos but I have to disagree with the auto lighting optimizer, I always use disable. I had some serious noise because of the camera trying to compensate the lack of light in some darkest spots so I would advice people to turn that off (even at 100 or 200 ISO)
thank you very much for your help. I am just getting started with video. Ive been involved with photography most of my life and I have the privilege of being the 2nd shooter (at weddings) for my daughters photography business. Always been intrigued with videography but I am clueless on almost everything that has to do with video shooting. After watching a couple of videos this morning and talking to our videographer from last nights wedding, I actually know how to put my camera (550d) in movie mode and shoot a video clip. I watched your "17 people to watch" video and took notes on your recommendations. My question to you would be, "What information would be helpful for me to start a great foundation to build upon as I pursue this passion of shooting video with the final goal of telling a great story.
@UpDog1000 seriously. do u have read the manual instruction book ? at first i confuse to with is aperture, shutter speed and exposure(the control base in what mode u use). try to read the book. good luck
What camera were you using for the examples at 4:15? T2i?\Also does the t2i-t3i have auto focus while recording or only before you start recording? Please answer! Thank you :)
Dave, we recorded a whole production in 1280p60, but found that it did not convert very well to 24fps or 30fps. In each frame, there was a blend of two or more frames, so it looked a little odd. My conclusion was to only use the 60 frames per second if I was sure I was going to slow down the footage... Have you seen this at all? How do you convert your video?
Hey Dave I have a question. With my DSLR, I usually bring it out for recording concerts and live performances and I always keep in mind the framerate rule. However in most cases it's not really ideal for me record my subjects, often dancing at 1/125 since it's often indoors with minimal lighting or outside in the dark. Most of the time, I sacrifice in quality by cranking the ISO up but sometimes that isn't enough and a shallow DOF isn't something I want. Would you still recommend going 1/125?
Dave hi I'm your follower I'm so glad that I discover such a nice man.you share your knowledge I would like to say thank you Dave.just I want ask what camera are you use it to shoot this video.?And it impress me the way you focus. How do you do that?thank you in advance Dave
are you really sure that the color temperature can't be changed in post? as far as I do post production I reduce the saturation or correct the red color channel to get rid of the "warm" effect. I maybe understood something wrong..
hi, Im a beginner using dslr 600d. I followed all your instructions but i got only dark screen but when i point the lens to the bright spot, it's working.. Do i need to have a strong lights like yours? nice tutorials nway... thanks..
And if the 600D is anything like the 550D you'll have to change the video exposure mode to 'manual', not 'auto'. Otherwise you won't be able to change the settings
180 degree shutter rule, 25fps equal 1/50 shutter, use iso or ND Filter, to can exposure leave the F stops for depth....Thats how you get a movie look.
I got a 50D and can't film at all (except for magic lantern maybe) but the one thing I don't understand is shutter speed at video. I mean, it isn't closing at all...?
Hey Dave! I'm a new subscriber. Your videos are my first go-to for tips and stuff. I'm only just getting into video and I have a t3i on the way. I'm pretty excited and I appreciate your videos on lighting and everything else. I have a question for you... why is it that many people prefer 1080p at 24fps, instead of 1080p at 30fps?
I'm not Dave but I have the answer you're looking for. The reason that most people prefer 24fps to 30 is that films are traditionally shot at 24fps. we are used to seeing the amount of motion blur that goes along with that frame rate. 30 is more akin to the way video is shot and for many things that works, but if you are trying to mimic the film look digitally your first step is to shoot in 24fps. the T3i is capable of 24fps at 1080, 30fps at 1080 and 60fps at 720 (there may be more that I can't remember) If you are shooting something to mimic film use 24, if you are shooting something that is moving fast but you want less motion blur shoot 30, and if you want to slow something down in post shoot 60. but there are no hard and fast rules so as soon as you get that camera go out and shoot and figure out what you like the best.
Get a LCD viewfinder then press the top right button and it will zoom in on your subject. Press it again and it will go to 10x and then press it once more to get to your normal view.
I thought you are always meant to shoot flat? By that I mean the picture style, crank down sharpness, saturation, contrast etc then colour correct it in post?
Dave do you know if the Nikon D700 DSLR is able to film? There are people who say it can't, but I think most ppl confuse live view with filming. It's just odd that this very expensive camera would not allow you to film something, when most point-and-shoot cameras do. I'm also interested in purchasing a semi-professional video-recorder. I often get asked to record videos during a wedding, cotillion, etc., what would you recommend? I have a bad back, so I don't want to purchase a professional model, which is usually very heavy.
I should have said move the slider to the right. I wasn't referring to the box with the color wheel. Look just below the wheel (CS5 CS6 Premiere Pro) - There should be a horizontal slider with three markers on it. To "crush" the blacks move the marker furthest to the left on the "input levels" slider to the right until you reach the level of black you would like present in your image. The marker in the middle is for adjusting your mids and the marker to the right is for highlights.
What profile would you recommend for lowlight shooting. We do alot of work in nightclubs and just wondering how you get your white balance and what profile you would recommend.
hey dave, is it possible to shoot video with the t2i looking through the viewfinder? i find it really difficult to shoot video in bright daylight.. is there a setting you can turn off the lcd and just use the view finder to shoot video?
I would not use AWB in video. It can wander making it look like it's flickering as you shoot and is impossible to correct in post. However if you pick something close, it can be corrected in post if it's off a little. For run and gun I would also use automatic ISO if I'm walking around in areas with differing lighting and want the camera to gain up on its own. I set the aperture and shutter speed in manual mode though so the camera doesn't stop down too far and degrade IQ. Maybe when you made this video this couldn't be done??
Dave, I went to Mexico and used my Nikon D 700 with a 16 GB Kingston Compact Flash card. I probably have hundreds of photos which I need to retrieve. My camera will not read or display them at all, and when I hook up my camera to my iMac, the images won't dowload either. I get a message on my camera screen "CHA" or "CHR" do you have any recommendations on what I should do, or go to have the images retrieved? What shouldn't I do?
Good grief, this is some fabulous video and audio. No question you have it figured out. So rare to see such quality on UA-cam.
This guy should get an award for his YT videos, top quality, always!
Loved this video! You explain things so well and have a great voice to listen too. Can't wait to check out all your other videos. Thanks so much for sharing all of your great info.
@sesukaku1 just rotate the dial on top of the camera in move mode.
@xexodusx not that I know of. Many people buy devices that attached to the screen for this reason.
@davelind I crank up the contrast a lot.
Thats something that is really cool about the higher end cameras like the red epic. They shoot the movies in RAW each frame can be changed just like a RAW image in photography
@LordAverage you are welcome, glad my video helped. Please give me a thumbs up if you liked it.
Had to borrow my buddy's 7D for a sudden freelance gig. This was a huge help, many thanks sir.
Great video. But for picture style I would make it so you record the flattest image possible (take down the contrast in camera and some saturation) so that you retain details in the shadows. This makes it easier to color correct/grade.

Thank you so much for taking your precious time to share this information with us. Thanks much appreciated.
@exitnc I just crush the blacks to make the black sheet behind me go totally black
Excellent! Short, sweet and very informative. Thanks for creating and sharing this.
Dave how do u get that professional looking black back ground please share that with us thanks
YET another GREAT INFORMATIVE video. Well put together, good flow of information.
yes i'm also interested Dave, Green screen, post work software,lights.... you're amazing with all this tutorial man..
Nice tips - quick, easy to understand. Thank you Dave
@NoufHO you should check its read/write speeds. you should go for a Mark 10 32Mb/s card, the higher the read/write speed the better
I learned today about the 18% gray card!! Thank you and best wishes with your vids!!! :D

Good morning, nice tips...enjoy the weekend😃😃😃
william munar hey! I'm the one who's looking for the tip tho.lol
More than 90% of video shot today is done with a phone, not a video camera.
Soon the digital camera will only be used on your laptop.
Dave, can you please post a tutorial how you shoot a video like this (lights, scene etc. setup) Thx.
just found you and love your videos--

@Gamer2Gamers what type of lights are they?
Great Tips for Before You Hit Record. Thanks Dave.
You are welcome!
Cool tips Dave, i love my 550d but having troubles in low light sometimes with noise, any (lens) tips?
Great tips, Dave. Thanks!
Oh my gosh dude your a lifesaver thank you for this video !

It helps to have the lighting from one side or both sides, not front on. Then the contrast difference is much greater.
What camera were you using for the examples at 4:15? T2i?\Also does the t2i-t3i have auto focus while recording or only before you start recording? Please answer! Thank you :)
wonderful lighting in this vid dave! Or maybe its just the yellow shirt that make you pop in this one!

at 1:09 yes you can change the temperature in post... it's called COLOUR CORRECTION.

sir ua explanation n presentation s mindblowing.............thank u very much ua vieos helped me a lot thanks again

dave,
why don't you use Cinestyle as picture style ?
thanks !
Nice explanation!
are you really sure that the color temperature can't be changed in post?
as far as I do post production I reduce the saturation or correct the red color channel to get rid of the "warm" effect. I maybe understood something wrong..
@rustynail77 nevermind, figured it out! after messing around for a while i put the lighting to manual instead of auto ;)
hey dave.
i notice you shoot in RAW mode.
do you always do this? why and do you recommend it
Thank you from Argentina!
Hello Dave. is there any software you can use to record video directly onto the computer?
hey, I'm thinking of the 7d, did your videos get better looking? What was the problem?
hey dave, how do you get such a perfect black backround?
hi, Im a beginner using dslr 600d. I followed all your instructions but i got only dark screen but when i point the lens to the bright spot, it's working.. Do i need to have a strong lights like yours? nice tutorials nway... thanks..
u can change the video color in adobe AE, juz alter the colors setting like yellow n red can turn ur video into warm
And if the 600D is anything like the 550D you'll have to change the video exposure mode to 'manual', not 'auto'. Otherwise you won't be able to change the settings

You are a class act, thank you for this.
hi dave ... may i know, what software you use to post process this video? thanks ...
If I was purchasing a DSLR off of Craigslist, what would you suggest I look for on the camera and lens???
Hey Dave! I'm a new subscriber. Your videos are my first go-to for tips and stuff. I'm only just getting into video and I have a t3i on the way. I'm pretty excited and I appreciate your videos on lighting and everything else.

Jake Mautner
Thanks Jake! Much appreciate you taking the time to fill me in :-).
For an indoor shoot with kind of orange tinted lights in my room should i set the white balance to Tungsten?
I have a thing I use to remember. FEWS. Focus, exposure, white balance, and shutter speed.
Use "Fast Color Corrector" and move the slider (input levels) to the left.
hi dave now when u use video mode do u use m mode or video mode on your dslr to shoot a video
As far as the gray card, how do you use it? Take a picture and do custom white balance?
Get a LCD viewfinder then press the top right button and it will zoom in on your subject. Press it again and it will go to 10x and then press it once more to get to your normal view.
I thought you are always meant to shoot flat? By that I mean the picture style, crank down sharpness, saturation, contrast etc then colour correct it in post?
0:27 "I'm shooting my kids". Just had to point that out because it made me giggle.
I'm beginger. I'm intend to buy EOS 700D for video. Thank you abot your clips !
Hey Dave, Has anyone ever mentioned that you resemble Ben Burtt?
Dave do you know if the Nikon D700 DSLR is able to film? There are people who say it can't, but I think most ppl confuse live view with filming. It's just odd that this very expensive camera would not allow you to film something, when most point-and-shoot cameras do. I'm also interested in purchasing a semi-professional video-recorder. I often get asked to record videos during a wedding, cotillion, etc., what would you recommend? I have a bad back, so I don't want to purchase a professional model, which is usually very heavy.

Great info Dave
What profile would you recommend for lowlight shooting. We do alot of work in nightclubs and just wondering how you get your white balance and what profile you would recommend.
@drumat5280 hey Dave, thanks for the support, I will check out your site!
Good job Dave
hey dave, is it possible to shoot video with the t2i looking through the viewfinder? i find it really difficult to shoot video in bright daylight.. is there a setting you can turn off the lcd and just use the view finder to shoot video?
I would not use AWB in video. It can wander making it look like it's flickering as you shoot and is impossible to correct in post. However if you pick something close, it can be corrected in post if it's off a little. For run and gun I would also use automatic ISO if I'm walking around in areas with differing lighting and want the camera to gain up on its own. I set the aperture and shutter speed in manual mode though so the camera doesn't stop down too far and degrade IQ. Maybe when you made this video this couldn't be done??
just getting into video...thanks for putting this on youtube
@sesukaku1 all clearly explained in the instruction manual.
I have the 600D (t3i) there seems to be no manual controls for the iso on the same screen as in your video. ("movie exposure" is set to manual) HELP!
so you dont use magic lantern for your Canon DSLR?
Why would you ever use the standerd picture style?
I use a custom PS that gives me 2 stops lat and 4 stops dynamic range.

Solid advice!
