greatest live big band i ever saw they went to 11 on the balls meter.
I have also seen Ed Parlermo and his orchestra many times for outstanding performances. Hearing "up from the sky" perculate up and out of a jazz cocaphony was like the sun breaking thru the clouds.
Every person in the band was famous. Whoever played bass would have to get out of your way so you could get into the bathroom, while he was playing! ( i would never do that mid song but people did). So many memories, so many legends all for about 15 US dollars. I pride myself on not being nostalgic, i try to look forward but man o man is it nice to think back on those beautiful nights in New York City. i lived in hicksville, 40 minutes from the village.

Looking forward to it. Always loved everything Gil did.
In 1973- one summer in NYC I heard Gil at the Vanguard. Sanborn, Billy Harper and Trevor Kohler. Trevor
as you know left a life long impression on me, That band was something else live. Keep on- thank you.

absolutely love this song .. JONI MITCHELL did it great justice on her MINGUS album imagine your admirers bring your work back to you as a sign of respect and admiration .. before you die... for the people who thought blues was only 3 chords .. see how Mingus describes the blues

Chris Hunter takes me back to watching/listening to NYJO in the late 70's.

One of the great Jazz tunes played by one of the greatest big bands. I was lucky to hear and see the Monday Night Orchestra at the Sweet Basil a few times in 1987 when they played that tune. Legends of the past. Michael Palin on trombone? 😛

I took my wife to see them on our first date Nov 14 0:58 didn't play they were having a record release party. We went anyway. I saw him with Jaco, Chuck Rainey tons o bass players. I think the line up was different every time. Me, my cousin and Gil urinated in public together outside seventh Avenue south. After Gil we started seeing Ed parlermo and his band doing zappa he still performs at iridium.
SAS was a great place to see and hear a show you could get in the first floor bar for free then pay to see the band upstairs. The band members seem to wander on stage from the audience where they sat with friends and family.
One show my friends and I made a big deal of Jaco sitting in, we talked about it all day. My brother ( not a big fan of any music) was expecting a GOD to walk on stage.
When Jaco came out, my brother looked at me and said, " that's Jaco"? The poor guy looked terrible some one near us said he slept on a bare mattress somewhere it was heart breaking.
his performance was excellent but you could tell he was not well.
One of the saddest experiences I ever had. Rest in peace to all my heros. Zappa, Jaco, Bowie, George Carlin, Wayne shorter, Joe Zawinal,
the list is long because I am old

It's great to see everyone looks healthy, like I remember them at Sweet Basil. I wouldn't want to be a musician unless I could play on this level. Gil was on the level of Duke Ellington, Miles and Coltrane. His recordings with Miles are what I resort to more than any of the others. This is what 'fusion music ' was, for real. Some of us have to listen.

    Hello, and Thank you!
I do apologize for the sound, we had to use the board mix because the multi-track audio files did not save with the exception of "Little Wing" and "Teen Town", did not release these yet.
Amp buzz is from the light rig there at the venue cannot fix now, will try to fix it for the next show coming up 5/13/13!

    Wow, Thank you so much!
I guess eventually we will do a DVD?
This year we will be doing a Studio Recording the first in almost 40 years!
I expect Chris to be a main part of it!

I used to hear this at the old Sweet Basil in NYC. As Chris plays the melody you can hear some other stuff going harmony wise, and his pacing of solos always kept my attention. That knocks me out.
Chris is a very interesting and complete player- I'd love to hear him with a CD deal- where he could record a few times a year on Blue Note or Verve- and get the exposure for his playing he deserves-really inspiring to hear live.
OH- Is this from a DVD that is for sale somewhere? I'd buy it in a second.

Wow, I really hate the alto player. This isn't a rock band, I'm sorry, this is supposed to be serious, interactive music, it's not just about you. Both Gil Evan's music and Mingus's music shouldn't be played In a david Sanborn style; disrespectful.

I was with you at first edge60able with the 'fusion' elements, but when the full orchestra kicked in, it was all classic 'Gil doin' Ming' for me. Love and thanks to all who brought this project to life ...

He’s chris hunter, typical gil’s saxophonist. They played together for alongtime. He often played sax solos on this piece.
