GoGo Penguin
v2.0
Gondwana Records Release date: Mar 17 2014
"Though very much jazz-based, they sit on the sort of spectrum that encompasses the likes of Radiohead, Portishead or Massive Attack" STV Entertainment
"It's obvious why the Manchester clubs are jumping to this band." The Guardian
Signed to Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Records and championed by DJs from Mike Chadwick to Gilles Peterson and Jamie Cullum GoGo Penguin's skittering break-beats, telepathic interplay and a penchant for anthemic melody all contribute to a sound that's wholly their own. Pianist Chris Illingworth's yearning classical influenced melodies are filtered through the dance music energy of bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner. But there is no leader, no global set of rules. Each member receives inspiration, ideas and information from each other. Their instrumentation might be the archetypal piano trio but while the melodic, harmonic and structural ideas are influenced by both classical and jazz the rhythms are drawn from left field electronica and it's this meeting of opposites that makes their unique acoustic-electronica sound so exciting and creates such an interesting and emotionally rich palate for the listener.

When somebody is loud, you hear him. But when somebody talks quietly, people listen to him. Just like this music.
....very well put.
Well said !
I am stunned. How have I only just discovered this band? Please never never ever ever stop.
they are just great. discovered them in a jazz radio show back home (africa) like 10 years ago and then saw them live in Normandy 4 or 5 years ago. brilliant, smart, soulful (just like your music mister Gomm, please come to Normandy or brittany soon)
Well thanks to you @Jon Gomm I am now aware of them too via Don Ross thanking you. Always love discovering music I never otherwise would have had a chance to find. Keep putting your stuff out too.
Gondwana Records hold some other gems
PS : I like your music too
Ooh my god. GoGo Penguin is my favourite. And I almost forgot about your existence until now. I used to be a super fan of you back in the days.
The drummer just left. :/
Occasionally you stumble upon something so endearing, so beautifully crafted, sublime and engaging that it punches a hole through the blandness, banality and tedium to transport you to a better place.
thats beautiful!
agreed, you put words on my thoughts
Thanks, I will
Hill said he was also an independent and independent counsel but said she has not had an appeal for any other court ruling
such a vocabulary!
Every artist in that room has their own amount of Genius.
been listening to this gem on repeat for nearly a year now, still not tired of it, still discovering more layers every time i listen
the power of the silence between the notes
the hitting of all the night notes at the right pitch
the complexity of it all
the talent of each musician
utterly a gift to us all
thank you
It really is so stunning. What an amazing band.
I picture a series of images, someone growing, falling in love, getting married, having kids of his own, all in a crescendo of emotion, until he gets old, recalls his precious memories, and passes away paecefully, surrounded by all his loved ones... don't ask me why, it's just what this magnificent piece does to me.
Kinda the same feeling I had with "6 feet's under"'s ending....
@@ericamegan3946 @goryllo I approve both of your comments. What comes in mind when discovering a new blissful song + SFU ending combo ... wonderful
Now that you mention it...yes...I could totally see this as the music in the (infamous) Final Episode of Six Feet Under. Literally one of the most poignant, jaw-dropping, lump in your throat Final Episodes...and more than anything, because of how they did the Closing Credits! Wow! I'd never seen closing credits like it, either before or since.
What a beautiful comment.
@@ericamegan3946 Great reference,loved 6 ft under
Listening to this masterpiece for the first time now, on a warm, yet windy and stormy summer night, with quite loud and bright thunders and storms.. sitting next to the open window, listening to the thunders and rain to this kinda music is poetry, a trip to emotional states...
Worth all the incessant drum practice growing up in our house. Excellent track, excellent album well done boys!
Il potere della musica di questi meravigliosi giovani artisti è quello di rivoltarti l"anima sfiorando, nota dopo nota, ogni più piccolo angolo nascosto.
Rob Turner an absolutely superb individual drummer. Really surprised he has left the band! A hard act to follow.....
New discovery.... love that feeling when you stumble on music that speaks u instantly. Powerful!
How did you get here? I was listening to "Sarathy Korwar" (who also just found out) and this wonder appeared in the "suggestions"
You'll love the Old Granada recording
Every once in a while you find a diamond in the rough when you’re not even looking.
Ha. its 5am on a sunday and im stumbling through the youtube rough, then by chance the algorythmes brough me here. I guess we have walked the the same path Rondom Berries. Such a beautiful peice of music.
Can't stop listening to this
+Ciaran Ryan = Me neither.
Love the drumming here - he carries this piece with such an inventive rhythmic pattern
right? it's so precise , I'm used to heavy drumming, this is something on it's own
spent bloody ages looking for this, some of us remember. i think its excellent. saved now! dont you dare delete it lads. respect.
thanks for that wonderful moment - that moment right now - listening to that piece of art for the first time - and feeling so much alive while doing so!
I had this moment last saturday at a festival. Best performance of all the festival!
I discovered this group and it was a real revelation for me. these people create beautiful music that touches me deep and pierces me with intense emotions. It's astounding !
I have found GoGo Penguin just recently and have fallen in love. For me, this song has a sound of hope; there are moments of uncertainty and what could be perceived as unease but there is the sound of hope underneath all of this. Thank you GoGo Penguin!
The individual pieces standing out yet so complimentary.. there are distinct advantages to playing in a trio and the recording is lovely and warm as well.. definitely feels you're hearing them in a cozy pub.
What a tune. What a great album. Thanks to Spotify emailing me today about your latest album I've *found you!* - truly breathtaking, uplifting and goosebumps making tunes. I'm off to buy your album now.
Very impressed w/ the drummer. He kept that syncopated beat steady, w/o a flaw. Neat little number!
This harmony brings tears to my eyes almost every time.
Same. It's so heartbreaking and lovely.
Oh, wow. Beautifully balanced and structured composition. A pleasure to hit the repeat button for.
Beautiful, beautiful musicans! Echos of ‘Not Drowning Waving’ meets ‘David Sylvian’
Beautifully sublime. Spacy and lots of other highly complimentary adjectives.
hahahahahahhaha
Incredible. Took kids out to carnivale, this was playing in the corned, Shazammed it and amazed never heard before. Incredible music.
Thank you, this is so good, especially for times like the ones we're living now :)
One of the best pieces of music I've ever heard that.
such an awesome trio. and the piano player is a beast!!
Davis Schulz Er wieder...
immer da wo die gute Musik ist
I dunno, that drummer is pretty swell too!
They are all super talented but personally Im always amazed at the bass lines coming out of that dudes magical fingers on a double bass
What a great piece! That’s a serious left hand span that Chris has - love his approach to piano - almost sounds like he’s playing with 3 hands, but still leaves space for the rest of the band. Looking forward to seeing them in San Francisco tonight at the start of their U. S./Europe tour.
I love how the shadows have so much of a role. beautiful!
I heard this on the radio today and I'm sad I didnt know about this band earlier but glad I discovered them now.
The Best band/Music I have found over the last few years, these guys kick-ass with their powerful songs. Just get your ass in Portugal please!
Well done guys! Bought your album, cannot stop listening to it. The sum is greater than the parts. Hope they keep producing such wonderful music for many years!
This is awesome. Glad they made the Mercury Prize short list, otherwise I wouldn't have found this.
This is incredible! Thank you for making this and sharing it!
4 minutes of my life I have invested in something amazing. I'll continue to invest as many of those 4 minutes as I have in this song!!!
Saw them play at Montreux Jazz Club last night - great band, great set.
Only just discovered them! I really do go to another place when i hear this, so gooooooood!
This is just.. So good.
Three talented musicians, one immensely beautiful sound.
Beautiful music it makes me feel instantly better
Music is LIFE
I heard this song on DLF a couple of days ago. I've ever since been love with it. Everything about this is just simply perfect.
The post-Jarrett generation have arrived.
So much soul, breaks my heart and give so much hope and joy at the same time. And the drummer, so much control pushing his own feelings.
(2:12) The fact that the pianist is playing all three parts here at the same time (low, middle, and high) is absolutely mind blowing to me. I was listening to this on headphones earlier and assumed he had to be overdubbing at least one part.
Came here to see if there was any live video of this song...I was wrong. Incredible.
it sounds like 3 parts but it's 2 with accent, otherwise he would need 3 hands
Dam shitt the roof is on fire!!
isn't the contrabass playing the bass tune of the piano ?
@@julienakazi9336 this is what happens, the bass compliments the lower notes of the piano in that segment, giving it otherworldly space.
@@julienakazi9336 it is :)
Just GOT to love this............
Wow!! This is something special. Awesome chord changes and progressions. This has a lovely organic feel to it.
Love this band ! Beautiful sound, incredible musicians and a lot of freshness :)
Y'all are hitting that 10th note on the piano like; "there ain't nothing to it". ^_^
Great respect
Can't stop listening to this, the time signatures/polyrythms are so mesmerizing
years ago i've listend to this harmony for the first time. it's still incredible good for me. thank you for that!
A kind of magic.
This is by far the most amazing (trio) group I enjoyed listening too. Great composition, unique style and wonderful instruments. You rock guys! I fell in love with the song and one of my favorites frm ur album by the way. I hope to hear more of your amazing music. Thank you for the symphony you are a true musician. I lOve it! ;*
There is such a balance and beauty in that. I'm happy talents like you still appear.
You 3 are nothing short of amazing.
BEAUTIFUL and INSPIRING
When do I get tired of Go Go penguin - still waiting.
Amazing new jazz music. Well structured and fresh.
Consummate musicians, an absolute delight to listen to.
Drummer is dope.
was thinking the same
Check out Yussef Dayes, and Mammal Hands
Oh yeah
@@almostskater3210 this what i was about to stay. I'm really wondering if there is something to look at with this band. Nothing original, sounds "schoolish". Thoughts?
@@Voulf I don't quite get what you are saying. Are you saying that people should listen to Yussef Dayes and Mammal Hands instead of GoGo Penguin? I love all of these bands. I like how they combine jazz themes with drum&bass. Check out the songs "Window" and "To Drown in You" by GoGo Penguin.
Des petits airs de EST mais un style bien à eux, des notes cristallines et puis, on a bien l'impression qu'ils ne se prennent pas la tête... Recherche du plaisir de jouer, ça se sent . Merci
Looooove you...think you'll become superstars in the future, amazing how you play together and great compositions...I'm a big fan
That really is a beautiful piece of music by talented musicians. Thank you for posting this.

Absolutey amazing especially when the piano progression came in!
Closed my eyes and smiling now! Yesss.

I come back again and again to hear/see this
Double bass, pianoforte and percussion, the roots of good Jazz-Blues inspired music.
Wow! I was just going to turn off a playlist, but the very first notes of this beauty didn’t let me - an instant pleasure that makes me thankful to the world 🙏 ❤️
How this unfolds is sublime.....simplicity wonderful shape to this
