I ask you to pray for me. I grew up in the Catholic Church and went to Catholic school, but left the faith after middle school due to egotism and my selfishness. Although I have never identified myself to others as anything but Catholic, I’ve been living an atheistic life for quite some time. I now am attempting to revert back to the Church but suffer from discouragement, despair, and bouts of depression due to my regret. I have tried to work up the courage to go to confession but suffer from doubts about my worthiness and how Christ could love me who betrayed him so harshly and consciously. I need your prayers.

I’ll tell you what a good priest told me, God’s love and mercy are infinitely greater than your most hideous sin. I struggle with accepting that all the time, because I don’t want to let myself off the hook. I feel like that’s cheating, so to speak. But that same wise priest told me to get my ass off the cross and get back to work in being a better Christian, otherwise I was just wasting my time. God wants you to repent but he also wants you to come back to Him and rejoice. Reread the story of the Prodigal Son. It always used to make me angry when I was little that the bad son got welcomed back and was given the best of everything. Until I realized we’re all the bad son, and we should all be happy when our lost family comes home and we should be grateful when we’ve made it back to our Father too and are welcomed back.

After years wondering around Protestantism, my conversion to Catholicism was completed on the feast of the conversion of Saint Paul. Thank you John Martignoni. I was confirmed Paul a year later on Easter.

I am your avid admirer, Dr Hahn, because of your passion and deep knowledge of Catholic Church history and I learn a lot from your discussions. One of my favorite books ever written about Saint Paul is called The Great Lion of God, by a Catholic writer, Taylor Caldwell. She also wrote an accompanying novel about the conversion of Saint Luke called Dear and Glorious Physician. Both out of print but if you ever find copies, I recommend them both.

The fact he traveled all over the Roman Empire preaching Jesus is astounding, considering how hard and dangerous travel was at the time. Yes, the film PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST is a good film. The british actor James Faulnkner was quite good as Paul and Jim Caviezel was good as Luke. Another good film is a tv movie from 1981 entitled PETER AND PAUL, starring Anthony Hopkins as Paul. You have any favorite books about Paul? I've enjoyed reading N.T. Wright's books on Paul.

The Church teaches that there are necessarily “conditions” of sin. If you eliminate the word sin and substitute the word damage, the teaching makes more sense. Damage to your mind, soul or body impairs your ability to perceive and follow the will of God. And you can cause damage to yourself or to someone else. Damage is damage is damage, whether you know it is or not. If you do something damaging to yourself that separates you from God, or separates someone else from God, that is sin. But God judges based on how a person is equipped to understand the damage. We are all damaged, but our responsibility for our damage is different. The church teaches that you have to know something is wrong, then you have to believe in your heart that it is wrong, and then you have to purposefully and knowingly cause that damage that harms your ability to love and serve God. That’s why we watch our own sin, examine our own conscience and raise our children to know what is damaging and sinful so they can avoid those things and make true good decisions. And because we in our limited way cannot understand or know what is in another’s heart or how well they understand how they are damaging themselves and others and their relationship with God. I hope that helps a little bit.

I feel Jesus is more merciful than St Paul and I find St Paul very demanding on his sexual morality , whereas Jesus whilst inviting us "to sin no more" was very gentle to the adulteress and to the Samaritan woman. Good talk Dr. Hahn. Yes, Paul is amazing. I think people forget. The fact he traveled all over the Roman Empire preaching Jesus is astounding, considering how hard and dangerous travel was at the time. Yes, the film PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST is a good film. The british actor James Faulnkner was quite good as Paul and Jim Caviezel was good as Luke. Another good film is a tv movie from 1981 entitled PETER AND PAUL, starring Anthony Hopkins as Paul. You have any favorite books about Paul? I've enjoyed reading N.T. Wright's books on Paul.

brilliant as always Dr Hahn. Jesus is still on the Cross. I pray for all protestants who belong not to so called churches but to cults and are pagan. Protestantism is man made and not of God. Protestants put their own human and false interpretation of sacred scripture over that of the infallible teaching authority of the holy Catholic Church which comes from the Holy Spirit! Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!

The philosopher Anthony Flew said that Paul was a ‘first rate intellectual’.
I envision that Paul’s conversion may have been the result of a very powerful intercessor. Perhaps Mary seeing the disciples being persecuted prayed for Paul’s conversion.

Perhaps, this is because so many Catholics focus on the Gospels, while so many Protestants seem to focus more on the Epistles.
Catholics focus and read the 73books of the Bible. Am a catholic and I read everything. The Gospels are the most important part of the Bible, because it contains the words of Jesus directly

St Paul was first a fervent persecutor of Christians and after his conversion turned to be a fervent "persecutor" of Christ's love.

So was his action sinful. If he thought he was doing right. Was he culpable?
The Church teaches that there are necessarily “conditions” of sin.
If you eliminate the word sin and substitute the word damage, the teaching makes more sense.
Damage to your mind, soul or body impairs your ability to perceive and follow the will of God. And you can cause damage to yourself or to someone else. Damage is damage is damage, whether you know it is or not.
If you do something damaging to yourself that separates you from God, or separates someone else from God, that is sin. But God judges based on how a person is equipped to understand the damage. We are all damaged, but our responsibility for our damage is different.
The church teaches that you have to know something is wrong, then you have to believe in your heart that it is wrong, and then you have to purposefully and knowingly cause that damage that harms your ability to love and serve God. That’s why we watch our own sin, examine our own conscience and raise our children to know what is damaging and sinful so they can avoid those things and make true good decisions. And because we in our limited way cannot understand or know what is in another’s heart or how well they understand how they are damaging themselves and others and their relationship with God.

Dear Dr Hahn, I much appreciate this video and your beautiful and scholarly insights into St Paul. On a personal level and I feel , perhaps wrongly, that St Paul is more quoted by clergy than Jesus. I feel Jesus is more merciful than St Paul and I find St Paul very demanding on his sexual morality , whereas Jesus whilst inviting us "to sin no more" was very gentle to the adulteress and to the Samaritan woman.
