    One comment about drinking desalinated water. It has no minerals in it, I used to long distance sail boat racing and we used water makers for saving weight,. Some swelling could be caused by electrolytes imbalance. We used to bring electrolytes packets to replace the missing minerals.

    And put a square of toilet paper on the wall or ceiling before the magnet and you won’t have to worry about any scratches to the surface(s). Those 70, 80 or 100lb magnets won’t lose strength with the paper in bewteen

    Serial cruiser here with several lines. FANS: very inconsistent rules not only among the different lines, but within the lines themselves. All depends on the crew and your stateroom attendant. Best Practice: bring your battery operated fans but put them away when you leave your stateroom. Rechargeable Fans: same as battery operated and DON’T leave them out recharging when you leave your stateroom. POWER STRIPS: again, the lines are very inconsistent regarding strips and/or extension cords. Use the same approach as with fans: put them away when you leave your stateroom. What I have found to be pretty consistent is even with “approved” power chargers such as demonstrated in this video, the lines want you to unplug them when not in use. We’ve had many stateroom attendants ask us to unplug them when not in use because they can be a fire hazard. Hope these tips help!

    I never used an over the door organizer. Since most cruise cabins have limited space, when we unpack, we only take out items we will use daily. Everything else, such as cold medicines and things we might only once throughout the cruise stay in the luggage under the bed and only come out if needed. It's not necessary to put everything on display and take up valueable space.

    The only thing I would caution with magnet hooks Is that if you have the extremely strong ones it is wise to probably put them with your clothes and make sure they are away from where you store your electronics.

    • @ChrisSzulwach
      @ChrisSzulwach 26 днів тому +7

      Almost all current electronics are completely safe with magnets. The real problems come about with hard disk drives, but since almost all storage is solid state now, there isn't a problem. In fact, Apple uses magnets in their chargers for their computers & phones.

      @@ChrisSzulwach I'm talking about the rare Earth magnet ones like the neodymium. Those are way more powerful than the average wall magnet. Besides, it's better to be cautious than to brick hundreds of dollars worth of electronics. 😎

      @@ChrisSzulwach Thanks for that information. I'm still concerned because I have seen that those neodymium magnets can wipe my debit/credit cards magnetic strip so I have never felt comfortable putting them near electronics personally. I know the ones I've bought myself were packaged so they were completely separated inside the box from other items. I'm glad that I don't have to be as scared of damaging my electronic equipment. I'm still going to be careful in the packaging of my luggage though. Thanks again for giving me some peace of mind. ✌️

    I learned years ago by watching these types of videos about what I should and should not bring. Very Helpful. Always bring magnet hooks!!! Great for hanging my husbands hats on and our wet bathing suits. The one thing I have not used/tried yet is the overdoor organizer. I don't feel the need for it. Usually plenty of space in the bathroom on the shelves for our toiletries. I also put my hair products on the desk. One thing I have started doing is using covers (Silicone works best) for our toothbrushes. That way when the steward cleans the bathroom they are not touching the brush part. Started this when Covid was still a real possibility and they were cleaning with heavy chemicals.

  • @nascarmadman
    @nascarmadman 23 дні тому +9

    One thing about the magnet hooks is some people for various reasons use them in conjunction with a shower curtain to divide the cabin for privacy or whatever. Some cruise lines discourage or downright ban this practice. SO if THAT is your intention, remember to take it down before leaving the cabin for breakfast or execursions etc.
    Something else NOT banned on the ships but in some countries - many of them in the Caribbean (IE Jamaica) is camouflage pattern clothing. Check before debarking at ports.
    If you are using a refillable water bottle, PLEASE use a glass and fill it then pour it into the bottle.

    The reason for the confusion about magnets is that extremely strong magnets are prohibited. The little 80 lb or 100 lb magnets that we use on cruise ships are fine. The TSA website says “For carriage by aircraft, any package or magnet which has a magnetic field of more than 0.00525 gauss measured at 4.5 m (15 feet) from any surface of the package or magnet cannot fly. If the magnetic field is less then 0.00525 gauss measured at 4.5 m (15 feet) then it is allowed in either checked or carry on.”

    If your feet are swelling it is probably because of the increased salt content in the food. This can happen especially if you eat low salt at home. Another reason might also be that you are not sitting with your feet up. If you usually sit in a recliner at home with your feet up, you will notice swelling when you never have a chance to elevate your feet. A good pair of compression socks will combat swelling.

    An unexpected banned item - I was waiting to board a cruise in Sydney and the staff noticed that the boy in the family ahead of me in line was scooting around on Heely shoes. They asked the parents "does he have any other footwear in your carry-on luggage?" He didn't. The family was told they would have to go and buy him different shoes (even, like, flip-flops) for him to be able to board the ship, as the Heelys would be confiscated. The over the door organizer works great if you use the 100 lb. magnetic hooks on the ceiling placed next to the wall. The magnets will slide if you use them on the walls if the weight is very heavy. They don't work well over the door in the bathroom because the door won't close and you could do damage to the door and frame. Using the magnets is a clean way to hang it. People’s gut is used to process treated water from where they live. As there are different ways to treat water to make it safe for consumption, one may experience a few days of discomfort when switching water source. As you mentioned, cruise ship will process saltwater through a reverse osmosis process (desalination) and will treat the water with bromine to keep it clean. Bromine is used instead of chlorine because unlike chlorine, it is safe to use around sea water and is (or at least was) cheaper. If your local water supply is treated with bromine, you should be fine. If not, you may be one to have a tummy ache for a few days until your gut adjusts. Thank you for the hacks, I’ll be using some of them on my next cruise.

    Everyone is different. For myself and travel friend, we like our cabin to look uncluttered so we put most stuff out of sight. Even traveling with some full size products, storage was never a problem on Holland America. Anything paper which is minimum now that things are on the cruise line app, we keep in the provided ship info folder. Plenty of closet shelves and night stand drawers, under the bed drawers, desk/vanity table drawers. Even the cube stool has a lift off top that is great to store things.

      I had scissors that look like children’s scissors. It took a while before Ireland decided they were okay, to fly. On our next flight I’ll be carrying a heavier looking pair that still meet the 4 inch max limit. A new law, Reese’s law, now makes them medically necessary. They are required to open most hearing aid batteries packs! Apparently children only swallow button batteries that are in their original packaging and never after they’ve been used. Yes, it may have to do how strong they still are, the descriptions didn’t explain why. And, yes I’m annoyed!

    Great video ❤❤ i had read in one of the cruise websites that I get emails each wk from that you are not actually allowed to hang things from the roof of the cruise ship cabin, and that people had been told that they had to remove anything hanging on magnets or similar and take them down. Or that the crew actually took them down when they came in to clean the cabin and left them a note to explain why. It also said that even crew has the same rule. Unless it is something needed for medical reasons then you still have to get permission. So not sure how true that is as I have seen lots of photos of passengers with things attached to the ceiling and crew members with fairy lights draped around there cabin. I also once watched a you tube video that stated that the cabin walls are NOT magnetic, that it is the paint that the walls have on them that has a magnetically base. Again not sure on how true that is.

      Lots of things hanging from the ceiling will definitely draw attention & people should follow the rules of their cruise line. However magnet hooks close to the wall aren’t usually a problem. As well, when you purchase a celebration package from the cruise line they do hang magnet adhered decorations from the ceiling 😂. Hard to know in this case :)

    I was given additional screening by the cruise line after the person watching the xray monitor flagged the box of magnet hooks as "suspicious." When I told the screening guy they were magnet hooks he was satisfied and sent me on my way. Also, we packed carry on only and had issues when flying home. We had bought some skin cream at the spa and the TSA flagged it as a liquid and the container was larger than allowed. Our choice was to lose it or return to ticketing, box it and check it as luggage with the associated baggage fee.
