We are not good at handing down big sentences in this country, life usually means 25 years unless it’s an actual whole life tarrif which isn’t very often
I feel like with CCTV, DNA profiling and ANPR police are solving crimes more easily than they were in the 80s and 90s so Crimewatch was no longer needed in the same way it was back then.
The 2015 and 2016 series was awful, almost unwatchable, Jeremy Vine trying to host it from outside a van. It was like Top of the Pops in 2006, it had had its day and failed to keep up with the times.
That slow moving one shot camera angle in the intro was wild. You don’t see stuff like that on tv nowadays Also I noticed watching several episodes of vintage Crimewatch that the term ‘buggery’ really doesn’t get used on tv much anymore.
The North Wales care homes scandal proved to be absolutely massive. Patrick Duggan was just one of the many, many offenders and it's believed that a paedophile ring with links into London and in Chester were active in abusing kids from the homes. Both Jimmy Saville and Margaret Thatcher's PPS, Peter Morrison (who was the MP for Chester) were seen at the home. Child sex abuse was going on on an industrial scale and one of the local police chiefs, Gordon Anglesea, was also later convicted for it. He proved to be just one in a highly sophisticated paedophile ring that had infiltrated children's homes and child welfare across the country - many of the offenders seemed to move from one care home to another, with their paedophile mates getting them jobs there. Other homes have had similar scandals, sometimes with the same offenders, including Lambeth and Islington. One other school in Sussex, Muntham House, also had a paedophile ring working there - some of whom have been named in a recent BBC podcast as suspects in the 1981 abduction and murder of Vishal Mehrotra from the streets where he lived in Putney. Child protection was simply not understood until fairly recently and protection was astonishingly naive and complacent. People with previous convictions could easily move from one school to another because there was no sex offenders register and very little background checking. Even on occasions when someone was caught, punishment was often light and many actually kept their jobs.
1999 Dennis Eagle 73 convicted and sentenced to 12 years. 2003 5 years into Eagle sentence he dies of Cancer. 2004 Eagles 86 year old sister fights for her brothers inocent.
24:05 I’ve been rotting my mind with crimewatch all week but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reconstruction with such corny and wisecracky writing. Lord, the writers had a real field day bringing the yuks in this one
He was convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, so he will be placed in a secure hospital. He'll be in Broadmoor, Rampton, or in one of the many other hospitals until they decide he's fit to be released, if ever.

@lw3646 I agree, that version of CW was terrible. Could've just kept it as it was & just freshened it up a bit.
The format relied on a large live viewing audience, something steadily on the decline
