I've been a professional photographer for nearly 50 years and I don't think I've ever heard anybody do a better job of explaining the exposure triangle than you did in this tutorial. Not only was the information completely accurate, it was very well presented and should have been easily absorbed by even the least experienced shooter.

Brilliantly explains the concepts in a way a beginner like me understands. I feel confident now I can go out and use my Osmo Pocket in a way that will produce better results. 5:10 Ahhh see. Great, thank you for this explanation. I was getting jitters shooting 30 frames and panning, so always shot on 60 frames. Hi there, thanks for you video explanation. Something for you. I live in the UK and whenever ive gone out in the rain or bad weather I always place my kit into zipper bags with those silicon gel bags, the ones you get in packaging. That way it keeps my lenses fresh, dries my kit, and my lenses dont get mold :)
I also do this when transitioning my gear from the cold into my house. Jip bag, silicon gel bag, and sitting in the porch for a while.

I'm working with an Pocket connected to the DJI mimo app. I notice when I have the camera on auto exposure, I am able to tap around the screen and get different exposures... cool! I also see that I can "lock" an exposure. What I'm concerned about is that when I lock an exposure it also seems to lock the focus to that point. For instance if I lock the exposure to an object 5 feet away and then try to pan over to an object 2 feet away the exposure remains the same, but the focus does not adjust to the closer object even though I am in AFC mode...? Any advice or tips greatly appreciated!

Hey man this video was very helpful, what filter would be good for indoor gym lifting footage? I got my osmo to shoot some cinematic workout videos and for that type of lighting what do you recommend ?
Hey, there! It depends on how strong the lights are for your shoot. Assuming it's normal interior lighting from the building, a PL or at most an ND4 would be fine. Usually, interior lights can be controlled in terms of brightness, and the space will be naturally darker than outside, so you don't normally need a powerful filter. The PL would help with glare though, which is often an issue in gyms where surfaces may be reflective.
Thanks for putting this content together. I purchased the osmo pocket and filters. I really appreciate the explanation of the adjustments depending on the frame rates. Are there any bullet proof rules on what nd filters / nd polarized filters to use shooting at specific frame rates similar to the 180 rule? I'm still confused hahaha. My mind isn't quiet adapting to the filters. I shoot lawn footage mostly and I deal with bright light or heavy shade that washes out my background or my face. I commonly film 1080p at 60fps or 4k. If you have this info would you mind sending me a link? Thanks again
It sounds like our app might be a helpful tool. There are no concrete rules about which filter to use when, that choice comes down to user preference and artistic needs, but the app does provide guidance on which filter will allow the 180 degree rule of shutter to be obeyed. okay, great video, one question, if you dont have a spare hand to change your filter if you are going from sunny to cloudy, can you just leave it on auto, will the pocket adjust appropriately?
we recommend manually adjusting your settings for best results.

Well, you could use auto, and it would reduce shutter speed without you having to do anything. Using Auto will not hold shutter speed at 1/60th or 1/120th (whatever double your frame rate is), it will fluctuate. The idea of the 180 degree rule is to hold shutter at double frame rate for the whole production. Happy to answer any other questions! -Jeff

@@rutgerdenhertog5846 Unfortunately, still no reply from PolarPro and wasnt able to find out. So I went for ND filters from Skyreat. Im pretty happy with them, but the package I got was only ND 4 to 16. On the plus side though, 4 to 16 regular ND AND 4 to 16 polarized in the pack.

Do the Exposure settings stay/save when removing the iPhone and turning off/on the Osmo Pocket? (lets say if I set it to 25fps, auto ISO, 1/50th)
Also, what are the default exposure-settings when not using an iPhone?
Is it always set automatically to auto ISO?
Also, is the shutter always set automatically to the correct double of the chosen fps? (ie: 25fps automatically sets to 1/50, or 60fps automatically sets to 1/120, etc.)
Or, is default set to auto-SS?

good video. one question, how do you control de amount of light when recording manual and suddenly the light changes? lets say you are in the sunny area and you go to a shady dar area?
When moving from bright sun to shade, you can swap out the ND filter or remove it completely in order to get the proper exposure. You can also compensate for the lack of light by cranking the shutter. If you are shooting on a full frame camera however, a Variable ND filter would be extremely beneficial in this situation since you can adjust the amount of light being let into your camera on the fly. This will eliminate the hassle of putting ND filters on and off. okay....hypothetical... i am filming my parasailing in hawaii with my Osmo Pocket... i am shooting in 4k 60frames, i turn my shutter speed to 1/120th and i throw on an ND-16 filter....go up and parasail at 900am,its hawaii, its sunny, i come down at look at my video....is it any good? or do i need to change my settings?
Hey, Mike! At a glance I see nothing wrong with that setup, however it will depend on the lighting conditions at the time you are shooting. For instance, 9am one day might not be the same as 9am the next day since the weather in Hawaii can shift between sun, overcast, and rain very quickly. We'd recommend using our app to double-check before installing the filter. ND16 might be a solid option though. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out (:
Does anything in these digital video cameras prevent setting a longer shudder speed (for additional blur effect)? For example, rather than 1/120 second @ 60 FPS, why not shoot at 1/90 second @ 60 FPS ??? Would that be called 270 degrees?
Hi Max, You can certainly film in these settings. The 180 degree rule is in place to create the most natural looking footage possible. As the creative, if you want to tweak these settings to obtain a desired look and feel this is a great way to do it! Great video! (Where are you, by the way! WOW! Look at that snow!) Sooo, I'm a newbie.. total amateur.. bought a Pocket 2, some filters.. trying to figure out all these settings.. YIKES! Kinda over my head here.. Can I see all those settings from my Pocket screen without having to use my phone every time? I'll be hiking some national parks this summer and would prefer just to carry the Pocket. I really, REALLY need to practice with this thing! Thanks again!
this may sound weird and im trying my luck here if anybody can help. My Osmo Pocket only have shutter speed down to 1/30 (cannot go any slower). I have try many setting, but it just wont works. So bad I cant do that blurry motion during Lapses. My latest firmware update is around 2 weeks ago after DJI introduce 'hyperlapse' function. -

Is the ND4 a good one to have on all of the time?
If your goal is to get shutter speed at double frame rate, you will probably need stronger ones for brighter days. I usually need my ND4 for bright indoor scenes with a lot of natural light, or golden hour. Remember, the goal of filters is to get your shutter speed at double frame rate, and the filter needed to achieve that will change based on ambient lighting.
This is going to sound stupid, but I have the ND 4 and ND 32, and Wide Angle filter, is the ND 16 Polarizer a different type of filter?
Hey, Chari! Choosing the right filter can be confusing when first starting off. The ND16/PL is a different type of filter compared to the other two that you mention. It reduces 4 stops of light and is recommended for bright outdoor conditions. Additionally, it also has polarizing benefits which will enhance the color and saturation of your image. Nice. There is a shutter collection (ND) and then there is vivid collection (ND/PL).
I wanted to know that if I get vivid collection which includes ND/PL then why will I need the Shutter series. Or What can I do with shutter series that I will not be able to do with vivid collection.
Hi GoodMan Pictures, Thanks for watching our video! The Vivid and Shutter collections have the same strength ND filters; ND4, ND8, ND16. You can accomplish the same thing with either collection in that regard. However, the Vivid series adds the polarizing element that will reduce glare and increase color saturation. If that is not needed or important to you, the Shutter collection would be a good choice!
Is there a way to monitor your exposure without the phone?
We are not aware of a way to accurately see that without a phone. The built-in display is very small and its unlikely to be the best option for that. Thanks for watching!
Hello there, great video and explanation. I bought an Osmo Pocket to make tours and walking videos around cities and towns. I've noticed that the video gets a little dark (people, trees, everything, except the sky) when the brightness of the sky goes to my cam; and when I move my cam down the sidewalk or other place away from the sky, the camera returns to beautiful colors and perfect brightness.
As you explained in your video, the shutter speed, and ISO are automatically by default settings and you can manually control them in the settings. If you watch my last videos (for example, the one walking on Washington St) you will see what am talking about. Would you suggest me to change the settings and to put it on ISO 100 and 1/60th shutter speed? All I want is to show the natural colors... blue sky, green trees, normal lighting, ect. But if you watch my last video of Washington Street, you will notice that the sky don't appears too blue, sometimes, but grey; and people's faces and buildings a little dark. What would you suggest me in my case?

@@FifaMaestroAdam Not technically, so am leaving the default settings and not changing the ISO nor shutter speed. But I already solved it by experience. What I do is when there is a contrast of brightness, I just focus the camera a little towards the sidewalk and that thing fixes automatically.
Thanks for the explanation. I can easily understand what you conveyed. But my Osmo pocket is behaving weird when compared to your tutorial on Shutter speed and iso. In manual settings, I kept my shutter speed twice the frame rate (1/50 ss for 24fps) but when I change the iso to 100 my video footage is getting too dark. It is expecting at least iso 800 for having the right exposure with 1/50 ss. Could you please explain where I'm going wrong?
Thanks for watching Prashanth! Most cameras can handle up to iso 2000 without having much grain or noise cameras. (i.e. the Sony a7iii or a7sii can even handle iso higher than that) However, bumping up the iso isn't that bad as long as the footage doesn't appear noisy. Another solution would be to add a light to help brighten up the scene.

Okay I gave up before the video ended so joke’s on me if you eventually got to it. This is a good video for someone who doesn’t know the principles of photography but I’m here to learn about Pocket settings (eg how to control the Pocket manually). I haven’t used this camera in a long time but I need it now for the tracking feature and just want to make sure I can control it the way I need to.
Edit: so my point is I think you should call the video something general about exposure and not something specific about the Pocket unless you go through the steps needed to set the exposure on this specific camera
Will that filter set also fit the Pocket 2?

I noticed that the ND filter corresponds to the number 2 to the power of the stop. So if I want to reduce light by 3 stops then I think 2 to the power of 3....which is 8 so I would use an ND8. So 4 stops is 2 to the power of 4.... corresponding to an ND16. 6 stops is 2 to the power of 6... corresponding with ND64. Is that correct?!?! I'm a novice, but noticed this.
You are absolutely correct!
What do the rotating lenses achieve differently?
Hi Mike, The rotating filters will be the neutral density + polarized (ND/PL) filter. By rotating, you will be able to increase or decrease the amount of polarization for a given scene. Please note, that you can not completely "turn off" the polarization as there will always be a slight or minimal polarizing effect. Hope this helps!

Set your shutter speed to double frame rate. Often you will need an ND filter to balance exposure.
Your options are learn the exposure triangle and stop values, or just put different ND filters on until the exposure looks right

You can change your shutter speed to frame rate and the ISO that's all aperture is fixed
This is why an ND filter is essential. Working with a fixed aperture requires your ISO and Shutter speed to compensate thus in bright scenarios it is ideal to cut light before it enters your lens.

@@PolarProFilters I got all the mounts as well, fully decked out for spring. BTW, the case for the limited collection is way better than the one for the other two. The mag mounts make it easier to grab without getting fingerprints all over the filters. You should sell them. Also consider making a case that can hold all of them. Put them closer together and you could get all 10 filters in the 6 box. 1 box is better than 3. I'd buy it.
