Wolfsburg is one independent Big city in the east of the country Lower Saxony. The city was founded in 1938 as the seat of the Volkswagen factory founded and is the fifth largest city in Lower Saxony with around 125,000 inhabitants.
Wolfsburg is one of the few city foundations in the first half of the 20th. Century in Germany. Until May 1945 the city bore the name City of the KdF car at Faller life.[ 2 ] The city was designed as a place of residence for the employees of the Volkswagen plant, in which the KdF wagons - the later VW Beetle - should be produced. In 1972 the population exceeded the limit of 100,000, making Wolfsburg a big city. That was in 2010 Gross domestic product the highest of all German cities per capita.[ 3 ][ 4 ]
Wolfsburg forms with the cities Braunschweig and Salzgitter one Regiopol region as well as one of the nine Centers in Lower Saxony and belongs to Hanover-Braunschweig-Göttingen-Wolfsburg metropolitan region. The closest major cities are Braunschweig around 26 kilometers southwest, Magdeburg around 64 kilometers southeast and Hanover around 74 kilometers west.
