When traffic on the motorway comes to a standstill, drivers are obliged to form an emergency lane between the left lane and the right or middle lane. This happens regardless of whether an accident has happened or not, because it is not possible to assess it with certainty. Vehicles in the left lane must drive as far as possible to the left edge, vehicles in the middle or right lane must drive to the edge of the right lane.

Unfortunately, their statement is wrong, as soon as the traffic becomes slow-flowing, the formation of the emergency lane must begin.

It is mandatory in Germany when there is an accident to stand as much as possible to the left and right of the road so that the emergency services can drive through in the middle and not get stuck in traffic. The sooner at the accident the better....especially with patients where they need to go and as soon as possible to the hospital.

7:15 "there is always like someone, that doesn't really stop, that doesn't really want to move"
That's actually worth a fine of about 200 euros in germany .. and you get two (bad behaviour) points on your drivers license. ;)

The first car not following the rule couldn’t decide whether to go right or left.

The unit we saw the situation from was a fire engine, which joined the incident with the burning trailer at the very end. They were bringing more manpower and, most importantly in a situation like this, more water, as German motorways have no hydrant system along them.
The police had blocked off all the lanes to create a safe environment for the firefighters to work in. The path to the right was nice, but not as it should be.
As soon as you start to slow down in a traffic jam, you are legally required to form an emergency lane between lanes one and two, counting from the left. As a mental bridge, look at your right hand, the thumb to the left and all the fingers to the right is the way each lane is supposed to orient itself in such a situation.
That was about as good as it gets in Germany these days.

Its the view from a Firetruck by the way. You may see it at the end of the video when they get off the vehicle.

Since Germany is a transit country for 9 neighboring countries and many foreigners have never heard of a "rescue lane", there are of course always a few who first have to find their way around how it works.
If a German blocks the emergency lane, this is punished with very severe fines, withdrawal of driver's license, and possibly even imprisonment.

From an article from 2019: “Poland is the eighth European country to implement an “emergency corridor” system to clear the way for emergency vehicles on congested roads. The system is already used in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Switzerland but was not widely known outside of those countries.”
Belgium, Lithuania and Croatia were added to that list in 2020 and 2022, respectively. Slowakia as well, not sure when. If you look at a map, all these countries form a continuous blob, mostly spreading east and south from Germany, which made it mandatory already in 1971.

@@aphextwin5712 Well, it was made "mandatory" in 1971 already .. but not punishable with a fine before 2021 sadly.

@@hackbyte The way I read Wikipedia, before 2017, there only was a Verwarnungsgeld of 20 Euro. In 2017, this was raised to a Bußgeld and in 2020 a one-month driving ban was added.

@@aphextwin5712 You are right, my goggle search just popped up with the "latest more strict regulation" which seems to be from 2021 which states additional fines if you try to missuse the rescue alley to get further along the street..

As soon as you hear a siren in Germany, the driver is obliged to form an emergency lane for emergency vehicles such as police, fire engines or ambulances. These may only be used by emergency vehicles. If a normal driver uses them in any way or drives behind the ambulance, a fine is due!

This is mandatory on German roads and especially the Autobahn if you don't comply as a driver you will get a hefty fine from the police if they stop you on the road.
