I also saw Queensryche open for KISS in the early 80s on the Warning tour and KISS'S Animalize tour. Was already a fan of both and my first time seeing both so I was blown away. I've seen QR with Geoff 18 times and Geoff only (solo) and new band 6 times.

Hello Amariss. After hearing your comments about how you liked the darker / magical tone of this song, I realized you might really like Ronnie James Dio. His songs are filled with darker tones (Holy Diver), and magical references (Rainbow In The Dark). Most of his songs fall into these categories. He is also considered one of the best vocalist of 80's metal. Another fact about Dio is that he is the rock musician who popularized the rock-n-roll hand signal \m/, and made it into the iconic symbol it is today.🤘

Original lineup Queensryche is my all time favorite band! Their live shows were the best I'd ever seen. They have amazing talent individually and collectively. Songwriting, musicianship, VOCALS, and performance!
Vampires, yeah. They wrote a few vampire-inspired songs:
    "Walk in the Shadows"
    "I Dream in Infrared"
    To get you started.
I think you will like their music...they are progressive and all their music isn't the same, but there's always that signature Queensryche sound, and intensity. They write great build-ups and pay-offs.
Glad you enjoyed them. This is a great song! Thanks for reacting to it. Hope you do more QR!

Queensryche started in the early 80's as a heavy metal band w/ progressive influences... and their subsequent albums were more diverse musically because they never made the same record twice... For a while, Queensryche were bigger than Iron Maiden and Judas Priest... but the band's later albums w/ vocalist Geoff Tate went into adult contemporary rock and their popularity declined before Tate was fired in 2012 after an altercation w/ the band members... He plays mostly Queensryche songs live in concert as a solo artist.
Chris DeGarmo (guitar/ songwriter) formed Queensryche in Seattle as a metal project enlisting the operatic Geoff Tate (vocals) along w/ Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) and recorded the 4-song EP 'Queensryche' that was released in 1983, which showed huge potential w/ songs like - 'The lady wore black'... 'Queen of the reich'.
Signed to EMI Records (which was Iron Maiden's label in the UK), Queensryche released their debut album 'The Warning' in 1984, which sold well in Japan but not much elsewhere... 2nd album 'Rage for Order' in 1986 incorporated more keyboards and futuristic sounds... it included a 'stalker anthem' cover "Gonna get close to you" (originally written & recorded by Lisa Dalbello) as a single... However, other songs like - 'Walk in the shadows'... 'London'... 'Screaming in digital'... became popular w/ their growing, loyal fanbase.
Queensryche's first platinum record came in 1988 - the concept album 'Operation: Mindcrime'... depicting a tragic story about a hitman 'Nicky' in Reagan's America, who is hired by a sinister figure 'Dr. X' to carry out political assassinations for his drug of choice... Nicky is hooked on he+++n w/ his contact 'Sister Mary' - a former prostitute-turned-nun who is entrapped in the plot and they fall in love... Dr. X orders Nicky to kill Sister Mary and after he is unable to, he demands release from Dr. X, who will not let them walk away... Standout songs from the album:
'Eyes of a stranger' ... 'Suite Sister Mary' (feat. Pamela Moore) ... 'Revolution calling' ... "I don't believe in love"... 🤘🤘
Queensryche spent 1989 opening for Metallica on a major tour.
In 1990, Queensryche scored a 3x platinum hit record 'Empire'... which was more commercial-sounding w/ 5 singles... the ballad 'Silent Lucidity' became a massive hit single in 1991... Other singles - 'Jet city woman' ... 'Empire' ... 'Anybody listening?' ... 'Best I can'.
Queensryche also appeared on MTV 'Unplugged' in 1992 playing an acoustic set. On the 'Building Empires' arena tour, Queensryche performed the entire 'Operation: Mindcrime' album in concert... A live set was released in 1992 as "Operation: Livecrime".
By 1994, the band was disillusioned and Geoff Tate had gone through a divorce... They decided to work on a mostly acoustic record 'Promised Land'... w/ songs depicting the dark mood within Queensryche. It sold platinum w/ the singles - 'I am I' ... 'Bridge'... but it was not a heavy metal record. Other songs from the album - 'Damaged' ... 'Lady Jane' ... 'Someone else'.
Guitarist Chris DeGarmo saw the Seattle 90's grunge scene explode in popularity and opted for Queensryche to attempt a 'stripped down' album in 1997 - 'Hear in the now frontier'... Even w/ songs like 'Sign of the times' ... 'You'... 'Some people fly'... fans were not happy w/ the band catering to 90's grunge music... The album sold under a half million copies and their label EMI shut down in '97, leaving the album w/ no promotion... A frustrated Chris DeGarmo announced that he was leaving the band after the tour.
Vocalist Geoff Tate took charge of Queensryche in 1999, enlisting guitarist Kelly Gray for the 'Q2K' album but it failed commercially as well w/ tracks like - 'Right side of my mind' ... 'Breakdown' ... 'Falling down'... Guitarist Chris DeGarmo did return briefly to co-write songs for their 2003 album 'Tribe'... a record that Tate wanted to depict America after the 9/11 attacks...Mike Stone (guitar) joined the band. In 2006, Tate announced a sequel album 'Operation: Mindcrime II' ... but it sold considerably less than the original 'Mindcrime' album... Years later, the members of Queensryche revealed that they did not play on the record - it was completed w/ session musicians.
Geoff Tate's Queensryche records were going musically further from their roots and sales for albums like 'American Soldier'... and 'Dedicated to Chaos'... were disappointing. After Geoff Tate was fired in 2012, the band took him to court for the rights to the name 'Queensryche'... They eventually reached a settlement.
In 2012, Queensryche announced that a younger singer Todd LaTorre would be their new singer and the band began playing more older material in concert... They returned to recording heavy metal records w/ LaTorre on vocals - 'Queensryche' (2013) and 'Condition Human' (2015).
In 2017, drummer Scott Rockenfield took a leave from Queensryche and did not return... Former Kamelot drummer Casey Grillo did the touring and joined full-time later... Guitarist Mike Stone rejoined in 2021... Queensryche released the albums 'The Verdict' (2019) and 'Digital Noise Alliance' (2022).
Some of the Queensryche songs w/ Todd LaTorre on vocals - 'Blood of the Levant' ... 'Bulletproof' ... 'Hold on' ... 'A world without'... 'Eye9'

I heard Queensryche in my teen years, thanx to a good buddy. My younger self thought some of their songs rocked pretty good. Now that I’m older, I can focus on other aspects of their music, such as Geoff Tate’s excellent singing. He’s said to have undergone vocal training by the same instructor who later coached Layne Staley of Alice In Chains. Of course, he’s also very naturally talented in the vocal realm. And I can now pay attention to their songwriting. Speaking of which, you mentioned dreams. Their song “Silent Lucidity” is all about lucid dreaming, something I’ve actually experienced. It’s tremendously well-written, and possibly the greatest power ballad of all time.

This is a very nice performance!
It feels a lot like sci-fi, but real 😍
His voice is very particular, it makes your eyes & ears dreaming, I would say it has a fairy sound.
You can find a voice that sounds in some way like this in Dream Theater.
James Labrie, the singer, has got a voice that sometimes sounds "fairy" too.
Obv is different under many aspects, but got that fairy quality.
To keep being in the progressive realm I suggest you to react to "Roundabout" by Yes, live Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame 2017.

Oh, yeah! Being a musician and vocalist myself Geoff Tate is one of my favorite singers. He's a classically trained vocalist with a four-octave vocal range. He had the same vocal teacher as Ann Wilson from the band Heart and Chris Cornell from the band Soundgarden. As far as backing vocals and harmonies, that was something that was normal in the 60's, 70's, 80's and into the 90's with a lot of rock bands. Most had more than one person that could sing, but you don't see that anymore, and not even for the last 15 or more years. That was cool when you kept saying "Whoo!" I also liked your air drumming skills. You did a good reaction and have a very nice sounding speaking voice. 🎸💿🎼🎶🎵💿❤❤

This song was written to inspire olympians who competed in the '84 Olympics. While Geoff's vocals are off the charts here, Chris DeGarmo hit the high notes with him for the harmonies, which is even more amazing!

      @stefanolowend 3 місяці тому +2

Welllll, although that's a nice sentiment, the song actually has nothing to do with the Olympics. Actually, the 1984 Olympics were already over with when this was released. It's actually a song about hope and youth. I've heard Geoff talk about the song a number of times before and he explained that it's a song written for those who feel left behind or someone who didn't take an opportunity when they had the chance ("too late to save a dream that's growing cold"), but that it's never too late. The future/fate is the unknown darkness... "but the light will guide your way", (i.e. "....so take hold of the flame"). I could go on, but, despite what it's about, it's one of my all time favorite songs. I saw Geoff in concert about 2 months ago (for about the 100th time) and he sounded absolutely incredible! I was able to talk to him after the show.....I was star-struck, tbh. We had a nice talk and I showed him my Queensryche tattoos 😂... Anyway, Peace to all! 🤘🤘 Take Hold!!

A band you might like is SteelHeart. Their singer, Miljenko Matijević, has one of the highest vocal ranges of any Rock vocalist. He is in the top tier of Rock Vocalists for sure. The songs, “I’ll Never Let You Go”, “She’s Gone”, and “Can’t Stop Me Lovin’ You” are must hear songs from SteelHeart. I’ll put links below. Thanks! The only way to get the full version of “She’s Gone”, is the album version which is the link that I posted and an “Unplugged” version. The “Official Video” is missing the entire first verse.

@@AmarissNevae I forgot to mention that the first two songs were Power Ballad hits when their debut album came out in 1990. The 3rd song is a rocker. Mili did the vocals for Mark Wahlberg’s character in the 2001 movie Rockstar also. On Halloween Night 1992 in Denver, while on tour promoting their second album, SteelHeart’s singer, Miljenko Matijević (Mili), while performing, had a 1,000# lighting truss fall striking him in the back of his head. The weight of the truss forced his face into the stage floor breaking his nose, jaw, cheek bone, and causing traumatic brain injuries. This took many years to recover from and ended the band and the momentum that they had coming off of the success of their debut album. Miljenko Matijević put together the band and a new lineup several years back and is touring still TODAY. He still has most of his vocal range but age has clipped some off of the top end as you could expect 34 years later.
