When you sell your food at a farmer's market, you're able to increase your revenue and make it more profitable for you to sell at farmer's markets. In this video, I'm going to run down six ways that you can increase your income from selling food products at these markets. Number one, being the most important aspect that you should implement is a sample. This is one that is a little tricky, but is a huge benefit. Some states don't allow you to do this because of the cottage food law.
But when you start to sample a product, if you can give customers a small sample, a small portion of that product, you'll have much more success and likelihood of selling it. One thing you want to keep in mind is that you don't want to make your samples too big, because remember that all of these items that you're making are costing you money to make. So you're not going to give away more than you're actually going to sell. When it comes to food products, number five, a lot of farmers' market vendors don't take debit or credit cards. They want to get cash in hand for every transaction.
You need to have this form of payment available for every customer that comes to your booth or comes to the farmer. If you sell something for $5.99 and it costs you 35 cents to make the transaction, you know what to go to $6 and 50 cents go up and let the customer absorb that payment for you, as opposed to you absorbing it. And if they come back next weekend and the weekend after that, that is going to be more of a benefit for you. It shows and it reflects on how you run your business and the type of food products that you have. Number one, there's a lot about you as a seller at the farmer's market.
Take pride in your booth. If you've got a group of people, they come through your booth, they buy a bunch of products, or they're kind of picking through things. Take a look around and find out what the price points are in the area where products similar to what you're selling are sold. Make sure you price it to sell and include packaging, labeling, and ingredients in the price. If you're a small business and you're at home, don't factor in so much labor at first, because you're probably the only one making the product and it's not too important just yet.
The booth that stands out the most has an eye-catching, amazing, colorful, eye-grabbing signage table tent. There are companies out there who can create custom tents, and believe it or not, custom tables, table cloths, and banners and signage. How do you get more sales at the farmer's market? Don't just have a boring white tent with some cookies and a little sign on the table, make sure that your signage catches people's attention. If it's Damien's chocolate chip cookies, it needs to be in big, colorful letters. Make sure that your signage is what's calling people to your booth.

I discovered several techniques for increasing sales at our farmers market in a big way. Multi level eye appealing colored displays, lots of colored tomatoes and great signage drew people to our booth like crazy. All we sold were organic heirloom tomatoes (approx 12 varieties) and strawberries under a 10ft x 10ft tent. Some vendors had so much stuff they they had veggies stacked and piled everywhere including on the ground. The big advantage of selling just tomatoes was that it was easy to keep our place organized. All of our tomatoes were displayed in heavy duty shinny black plastic milk crates I bought at Lowers. The nice thing about the crates was that I harvested into the crates, transported the crates to the barn for cooling down, then to the enclosed trailer and finally into our sales booth at the farmers market. I only touched the tomatoes once saving a ton of time. I could do all of that by myself for 4-5 hours on late Friday for the Saturday market and the crates stacked nicely saving room in the trailer. I installed a raised bottom in the crates so there was only 3-4 levels of tomatoes right up to the top of the crates. This limited damaging the fruit from over filling and crushing and we could set on Sat morning completely in under 30 minutes. I built two multi leveled display stands the could hold 9 crated each at about 45 degree angle in three rows/levels from knee height to mid chest height. It appeared that we had 100s and 100s of pounds for sale but it was actually around 15-20 pounds per crate. We typically had 40-60 crates in the enclosed trailer ready to go and it was simple to restock and or change out. (Economy of motion is the key to success.) Customers could clearly see the fruit in the crates and they did not need to reach as far and 3-4 people could be selecting tomatoes at the same time. The big advantage of the display tables is that we only needed one small folding table for the scales, cash box and paper sacks. Since we had more room in our booth, we could move the display tables 4 ft in further under the tent giving customers room to step out of the crowds and out of the rain or bright sun. When we first started selling at the market everyone else sold the same red tomatoes and just nothing special. We decided to just sell heirloom varieties that most people had never heard of much less tasted. Most were European or Russian or Asian in origin. We put up fancy and colorful signs describing each variety in the same maner that wine companies describe their wines. We also put little stickers of flags from the country's where the varieties originated from on the display signs. Huge hit with everyone that came by. We have since retired but those were fun and profitable days.

I've had nothing but headache with 3rd party cash transfer apps and credit card sales such as venmo and square. Locked accounts for "suspicious" activity, charge backs, MONTHS to release funds etc etc. I'm not saying don't accept card but in my instance as a commercial vegetables grower with items priced between 50cents and $5or $6 bucks added fees and third party terms and conditions have been a nightmare. People need to have at least $10 cash when visiting a market.
Let's wait and see how this new 3rd party $600 tax changes impacts things.

Do food samples have to be packaged if you are a Cottage Kitch Op at a Farmer's Market in Florida?

I've had good luck making my own design with Canva app. Take that high resolution image and print what you need with vistaprint.
Poster my wall is also a great site.

What devices/apps/programs do you use to accept credit & debit card payments?

See if your state offers a free program for vendors that also allows acceptance of EBT. My local BBB (buy fresh buy local program) sponsored by local groups and universities offers this type of program. Do NOT use any 3rd party transfer apps like venmo or square. They are awful IMO.
The USDA offers card reader devices for free in my area. Need the proper tax documents and proof of business.

You have to check your local cottage food laws. State, city and county
