I think you make a good point here about the role luck plays in collapses. I think in general people understate the level of luck in cricket. Sometimes you beat the edge time after time and never catch edge, then the batsmen goes on to make 100, other times the batsmen is at ease until his first false shot just catches the edge. But I think in case you understate a level of frailty in the Indian batting. It isn't just luck that this has happened to India 3 times since 2020. The pitch was extremely difficult, but New Zealand beat the edge a lot in that short innings and the Indian players lacked the technique to give themselves the best chance of surviving against a moving ball. And just structurally - when your middle order typically underperforms but the lower order makes up for it... that leaves you vulnerable on days when the top order fails and the middle order can't survive long enough so the lower order can bat in more favorable conditions. Australia had a similar spate of very low scores and at the time I was quick to claim a lot of it was just luck. To some extent that did play a role, but there was also a vulnerability in that side, as they had a revolving door in the top 3, and a middle order that did not have the technique or approach when exposed to a still moving ball. If a disaster happens, maybe it was bad luck. If it happens 3 times, maybe there's something else going on.
